A gentleman who ia in business in th'is city, has a correspondent in a Texas town, who, whenever he trans mits money in any form by mail, cov ers the envelope with an astounding array of hieroglyphics evideully in tended to scare off thieves. He showed me one of these queerly decorated envelopes. Along the top of the reverse side was written "!De coy letter No. 10 Ikm, P. O. J." Across the flap of the envelope were drawn rough pen lines, and sideways from the center the words, "Private marks." Below these signs wa3 the inscription, "Witness O. K. at 24," with a formidable flourish beneath it. "My Texas friend always ornaments his envelopes in this fashion," said may informant, "and he appears to believe that postal pilferers will not dare to touch a letter so embellished. It is a queer notiouio gel into a busi ness man's head." Talking of marking envelopes, I had a little experience with a British mail clerk in London last year which bears on the subject. I usually mailed my letters to the Dispatch at the postoffice at Churing Cross. It was always necessary to have them weighed, and the same man, a florid individual of whose fea tures I can only recall a singular bulbous eye, performed the service for me. In order to insure the let ter's reaching the hands of the pro per authority in the Dispatch office with the least possible delay I was wont to write along the top of the envelope:, "News. Important." Every time I handed one of these missives to the meaty..eyed,Qlerk in the .Char ing Cross pDstoflice I noticed he looked hard at thd legend. "News. Important," and a smile of scorn would curl his upper lip. One morning I gave a letter to this clerk to be weighed, and business being a little slack he took time to say: "Hi suppose you think that writing 'News, Jiimportant, on that letter1!! make litis 'nrry hit through." "No," said I, "I know of nothing that would make yon hurry, unless it were dynamite." Ever afterward wheu I went iuto the Charing Cross qffiep I noticed that the prominent eyo ,qf the face tious clerk watohed me warily, i think he suspected me of bring an invincible. They Cannot Get Their Eills Out While Ton Hold Your Breath. Three or four men were sitting on the piazza of a seaside cottage smok ing. It was evening. The stars were as thick in the sky as freckles on a red-hf:idtJ girl's fnce The waves came in on the beach with a .- wish swash swosh just a3 they have done ever siuce the second day of the cre ation. . More piercing than the song of the waves were the notes, and more mul titudinous than the stars of heaven the number of the mosquitoes that haunted the piazza, aud every one of them was "looking for blood.'' The men censed smoking for fun. They now puffed their pipes and cigars to keep the mosquitoes away. "Something funny about mosqui toes," said one rather absentraiud edly. "Yes, rather," was the drawling re ply. "Funny how much blood it takes to fill one of them up." "No, but honest, now; do you know that if a raosquito'd get his bill down into your baud he can't pull it out while you hold your breath?" "Don't believe it." "It is true, however, for I have tried it." "Bet yon the cigars a mosquito cau take his bill ont at any time he wants to do it, and wo will try it right hero Is it a go?" "It is, and I'll lot them try." A lamp was lighted, the cigars jmt ont and nil waited. In less than a miu nte a mosquito bud placed himself on Tom's hand and begun operations. "Now," said Tom, nud placed the forefinger of his other hand down close to the mosquito. It did not budge. He placed his nail against the abdomen of the insect and whirled it arouud. Still it.ieuiained fixed. "You can do it every time," said Tom, as he killed the mosquito and drew a long breath. It is a fact. Go and try it. Boston Globe. Self-defense Against a Dangerous Fop.
