tzj Wxt Mty gimm ASTORIA, OEEGON: SATURDAY .. AUGUST 17,1889. CREAMERIES IN OREGON. Astosia people have often of late years eaten nicely tasting butter in wooden pails from Iowa, and Illinois, made in creameries in these states, and the nat ural inquiry has been, "Why, with our gonial climate, in this natural dairy country, wouldn't it pay to have a cream ery here?" Other communities have evi dently asked the same question, for in several places in Oregon and Washing ton creameries have been established. It is with surprise that The Astobiak has from time to time noted that cream eries so established have been abandoned, because they "didn't pay." Just why they don't pay is the question. One would think a creamery would be a good paying institution in western Oregon, where cows don't have to be wintered, and where A 1 butter brings forty cents a pound the year round. If Iowa, and Illinois, where the people have to work hard seven months in the year to keep from freezing the other five, can manufacture good butter and sell it here at a profit at thirty cents a pound, it looks a little singular that a Clatsop or Yamhill or Polk county creamery should be a failure. A gentleman in conversation with the writer yesterday made a remark that throws a little light on the matter. He has just returned from a visit to southern Michigan, and being a close ob server was telling about industrial con ditions there. Said he: "The farmers are selling their land for what they can get. The stock business has passed into the hands of men like Armour of Chicago, who sell dressed moat in every little town cheaper than the local butcher. The milk bus iness isn't what it was. As long as creameries paid a cent a pound there was a little in raising cows for their milk producing qualities, but half a cent a pound is the best price now paid for milk in southern Michigan creameries, and there is no money in furnishing milk at that price." Half a cent a pound for milk! No wonder they can make butter cheap Milk costs four cents a pound eight times as much in Astoria. The latest Oregon creamery to suspend is the one at McMinimile. The cream ery paid twenty cents a pound for cream. The men who raised and fed and milked the cows thought that twenty cents wasn't enough. The proprietors of the creamery thought, at last, that it was too much. A Michigan man offered half a cent a pound for his milk, if able to get 20 cents a pound for cream at his door, in a coun try where his cows could run the season through, would think he was doing a land office business. A creamery in any natural dairy coun try like any western Oregon county, if rightly managed, couldn't help paying. Thorough bred miloh cows, great milk producers, owned by the proprietors of the creamery, where butter and cheese were made, and hogs fattened, the whole F business superintended by competent, intelligent and experienced men, will yet make the creamery business a finan cial success in Oregon. COMPOSITE POLITICS. Something new ia promised in Oregon politics by the formation of a party which has not yet been given a name, but which may respectfully be called the composites. There was a preliminary meeting of the representatives of the various ele ments of the proposed composite party at Salem last Saturday and the idea pre vailed to have a convention in that city on the 14th of next month. The idea seems to be reform, and the party will probably be named the union reform party by those who are in it. The intention is to consolidate all the floating elements of probable political strength; the prohibition party; the grange; the Knights of LaborfUhe Fed erated Trades; the union labor men, etc. The further idea of the conference is stated to be: To consider the practicability of the union of all the above named reform forces, and of all citizens not identified with these organizations, but who are in favor of better government in a political party that shall pledge itself for the set tlement of the great questions now press ing for settlement by legislation, and of all kindred questions that may arise; and if such consolidation is agreed upon, to adopt a platform and to provide for thor ough county and precinct organization of the state preparatory to the nomina tion of state and county union tickets. It will be interesting to note the prog ress of this party, the assimilation of the various differences and the final ef fort on the part of politicians and ambi tious office seekers to use it as a means of furthering personal ends. The supreme court of the United States thus defines a gambling contract. A con tract for the sale of goods to be delivered at a future day is valid, even though the seller has not the goods, nor anv other means of getting them than to go into the market and buy them. But such a contract is only valid where the parties really intend and agree that the goods are to be delivered by the seller, and the price paid by the buyer. If, under the guise of such a contract, the real intent be merely to speculate in the rise and fall of prices, and the goods are not to be delivered, but one party is to pay to the other the difference between the con tract price and the market price of the goods at the date fixed for executing the contract, then the whole transaction con stitutes nothing more than a wager, and is null and void under the statute. The interstate commerce commission haB called upon all the railroad com-! pamesfor information as to whether they have any accident or death fund for employes; if they provide lodging or eat ing houses or reading rooms for them; if they use technical education in their shops, have a recognized system of pro motion, and if they enforce special rules to insure the competency of engineers or firemen. The Oklahoma word "sooner," used to characterize the fellows who got there and squatted sooner than the law allowed, is coming into general use out west to describe various sorts of too previous people, including the politicians who start their own booms prematurely. Duunq July 24,715 immigrants landed at Castle Garden, New York, against 23, 690 in July, 1888. Every month this year has been marked by a' gradual de cline in Europeon immigration. The conference of American nations will meet in Washington in October. It is believed all the states of North and South America and Mexico will be rep- resentated by" delegates. . A Quebec paper says that steamers are rapidly supplanting sailing vessels in the lumber trade. Five large ocean steamers are now taking in full cargoes of lumber at that "port. The Philadelphia Record nominates Qrover Cleveland for president of the World's fair commission. This would insure a great Democratic exposition in 1892. The prediction is made that by 1895 the Nioaragua canal will be open for busi ness. AIKVICJSTO 3IOTHEIIS. Mrs. Winslow's Soothixo Syhup shpuld always be used lor children teething.
