The walk home was exhilarating, and he felt on arriving at his board ing honae in camp, that his inner man required some nourishment. All the other inmates were ensconsed in the arms;of Morpheus, but the neaa oViVMpr wns familiar with the pantry, and to that place he directed his light footsteps. All else was dark. I Fumbling around he managed to se- j cure a handful of crackers, and two j slices of bread. Dry crackers ana bread of themselves are not satisfac tory eating, and so thought the head skidder as he continued his fum bling. His efforts were crowned wil b success, for at length he found a knife and something soft in a jar which he readily deoided was "blackberry jelly. Into the latter Lo dived quite freely, spreading a good layer of it on the crackers aud bread. He theu sat down to enjoy the fruits of his search. Being very hungry he ate raveuously for a while, when at length he felt a peculiar sensation at his mouth, throat aud stomach. He became alarmed and yelled for assistance. It came aud when a light was made the skidder discovered he had eaten a quart of soft soap. His throat aud mouth have since been so slippery that he has to put saud into them to give tone to his voice. Sumner Her ald. She Was Prepared. A minister's wife, who is not so serious minded at all limes as her husband is, tells somo laughable sto ries relating to ceremonies which her husband -performed while they were living in n newly settled district in the west. This minister alwavs felt it his duty to give each young couple a lit tle serious advice before he performed the marriage ceremony, and for this purpose he usually took them aside, one at a time, and talked very soberly to each of them regarding the great importance of the step they were to take and the responsibilities they were to assume. One day he talked in his most ear uest manner for several minuted to a youugwoman who had come to be married to n' 'very bright looking young' man. ' "And now," ho said, iu closing, "I hope yon fully realize the extreme importance of the step you are tak ing, and' that "you are prepared for it." "Prepared," she said, "iunoceutly, "well if I aiu't prepared I don't know who is. I'vegot-four common quilts and two nice ones, and four bra ml new feather beds, ten sheets aud twelve pairs of pillow slips, four liuou table clothes, a dozen spoons and a good six quart brass kettlo. We are confident that the Astoria and South Coast road will strike this place whenever the road is built, for to get to the Beaver creek pass they cannot help passing through this place without a much greater ex pense. The Beaver creek pass is a natural outlet for a jailroad and there will be no necessity for a heavier grade tban twenty feet to the mile, and the road can be built compara- tively straight, while if any of the other passes are taken, the grades will be a great deal heavier and more frequeut curves will occur, and of course a greater expense to the corn- pany onnuiug me roau. as tor tne railroad tapping tne coal mines, it 13 believed by many that a branch will be built from some poiut in the Ne halem valley (probably Vemonia) to the coal mines and thence to Scap poose. A branch road could easily be built from the main line near the bummit of the Beaver pass to tap the coal mines, thereby saving a big ex pense to the company as only about two miles of road would need to be built. No railroad surveyors have ever been over this Benver creek pass that we are aware of, but if they once look over this route we are satisfied thnt is where the road will go.
