ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY JULY 18, 1SS9.
HARrEB's "Weekly, that good Dem
ocratic journal, is especially bitter
against President Harrison because lie
doesn't lmrry, and in the next column
complains that he does hurry. The
"man milliner" ivho edits Harper's
Weekly is getting more and more in
consistent in his old age and is de
generating into a common scold. His
editorials are not criticism, for criti
cism requires intelligence. They are
simply snarls.
Tiie prophetic utterance of Pro
fessor Brackett, of Princeton college,
in his address to the Electrical club,
of New York, last fall: "Notwithstand
ing the fact that in New York it is
the law that all persons convicted of
offenses that are punishable by death
are hereafter to be executed by elec
tricity, my belief is that never a single
man will die, except by accident, by
that method," seems likely to be veri
fied. All the electricians of New York
are now asking to have the new exe
cution law declared unconstitutional.
The legality of the sentence passed
upon the murderer William Kemmler,
who was to have been the first exe
cuted by electricity, has been disputed
on the ground that the punishment is
cruel. Evidence will be taken before
a referee, and persons interested in
electricity are now eagerly awaiting
the result of the case and the evidence
taken.
Tiie attention of our Democratic
brethren who believe in swivel service
reform is gently directed to the case
of John Swett. He is the father of
the common school system of Cali
fernia: he is a foremost educator of
national renewn: books of which he
is the author are translated into for
eign tongues because of their excel
lency. He is one of San Francisco's
honored citizens, and a great edu
cator. The Democratic board of edu
cation has given him the grand
bounce, cut off his head, and given
his position to a lady, the wife of a
gentleman to whom the Dem
ocratic ooara or education is
under obligations for valuable
political services rendered. Swett's
scalp hangs at Boss Buckley's girdle.
In the meantime San Francisco Dem
ocrats beat their breasts and foam at
the mouth in fuming fury over Presi
dent Harrison's federal appointments,
Is it right, oh men and brethren, to
bring politics into schoels: to dis
charge tried and faithful men to make
room for iolitical favorites? Or is
snivel service reform something for
Democrats to solely preach and Re
publicans to solely practice?
HE SENT IT K.VST.
For a year I was troubled with pains in
my back and side, and headaches the re
sult of liver and kidney trouble. I was
attracted to Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilln,
by the startling testimonials in the pa
pers. They seemed so practical I was in
duced to try it, knowing that as it was
purely vegetable, it would do no harm.
It acted as a gentle laxative. After the
second bottle my pains and aches disap
peared. It did so much for me that I
sent several bottles to my family in New
Jersey, who also took it with the most
satisfactory results.

On April 4, Captain Noyes, master

rocks about forty feet high in latitude
32 deg. 50 min., north, longitude 110
deg. east, about twenty-five miles to
northward and eastward of Ononga or
Aaero Island.
Captain Lovett, of the brig Eagle is
reported to have seen a pyramidal
rock thirty-five to forty feet high, ill
latitude 32 deg. 40 min. north, longi

The entire chain of islands which is
shown on the charts as stretching

KTLRAIX HEARD FROJr AGAIN.
Baitoiore, July 17. Kilrain ar
rived in Baltimore yesterday and lias
entirely recovered the effects or his
recent battle with Sullivan. He does
not show a mark of any kind. Kil
rain said he was whipped squarely,
but he thought he was largely the
victim of circumstances. "When asked
if he thought he had been drugged, he
said no. Johnnie Murphy, when
asked the same question, answered
mysteriously that there was something
wrong, but that for the present his
tongue was tied, but when the proper
time came he expected to make some
important revelations. ''Have you
got anything to say about Mitchell?"
the reporter asked.
"Well he was not verv attentive to
say the least." "If you ever fight
again would you have Mitchell for a
trainer?" "No sir I don't know that
I would, but I don't know that I will
fight any more. I think Fve had my
share of it" In speaking further of
the fight, Kilrain said: "T weighed
185 pounds when I .went into the ring,
and all talk about me only weighing
1G8 is all bosh. I knew'that I had
not been trained properly, and was
not in a fit condition to fight Sullivan,
but if I had not gone into the ring
people would have said I was a cow
ard. I meant to fight if it killed me.
The crowd there was against me. and
the referee while I think he is a
square man, was partial to Sullivan,
and knew nothing about the rules.
Both he and the crowd kept all the
time telling me to go up to Snllivan,
and I went knowing I would onlv be
knocked down. Of course the referee i
had no right to say a word, and under
the rules I could have run all around
the ring, but there was no one but!
little Murphy there to coach and T
blindly went up and took my medi
cine. In fact I thought that 1 war,
knocked down repeatedly, but not be
ing knocked out shows that Sullivan's j
terrible blows did not have the power
some people suppose they did. J
could have stood up longer but Don
ovan threw up the sponge in his ex
citement, being afraid that I would be
killed. My blows for some reason,
did not seem to have any force. My
arms seemed numb, but what was the
matter I don't know for the life of me,
The sun (had a terrible effect on me,
my back was one big blister after the
fight."
