Tho Columbian government offers
to pay the passage of an emigrant,
give him S6 a month, 250 acres of
land, a cow, two pigs, a plow, help
him to build a house and transport
him free from the seaport - to the
point where he desires to settle. This
offer should certainly be liberal
enough to induce some of the dis
satisfied, discontented agitators of
this land to go somewhere or else
keep still.
The United States maintains but
four first-class foreign missions, to
wit: Those at London, Paris, Berlin
and St. Petersburg. The salary of
each is $17,500 a year, but it costs
each minister twice that much to hold
the office and maintain proper dignity
in it. Minister Keed has rented a
residence in Pari3 at $20,000 a year,
or $2,500 more than his salary. Only
a very rich man can afford to take
one of those positions.
The president has decided that the
civil service rules which prohibit re

This will enable about 1,000 veterans
discharged during the first three
years of Cleveland's administration
to get their places back.
The bamboo tree does not blossom
until it attains its thirtieth year,
when it produces seed profusely and
then dies. It is said that a famine
was prevented in India in 1812 by the
sudden flowering of the bamboo trees,
where 50,000 people had resorted to
the jungles to gather the seed for
for food.

sweet, easly taken and do not gripe. J.
