LOOK AT YOUE WATOH! And See How the Hours Are Marked by Roman Numerals. "Mark down the figures on tbe face of a walch," said a Summit street jeweler to a reporter of the Toledo Blade. 1,2,3,4,5, 6 began the reporler as he put pencil to paper. - "No, I mean Bonian numerals." Then this was produced. I. II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X. XI, XII. "You are wrong," Baid the jeweler. "I guess not," said tht reporter. "Try again." said the jeweler. "Perhaps I don't know how to count in Koman figures," said the re porter. "You know that well enough, but watch-makers use different ones. Look at your watoh." "Haven't got one." "Well, look at mine. See tbe figure which stands for 4 o'clock." The reporter looked, and was sur prised. It was ITU and not IV. "Are all the clocks and watches that way?" he asked. "Every one which has Roman fig ures on its dial." "Why?" "Well, I'll tell you the story. It is nothing but a tradition among watch makers, but the custom has always been preserved. You may or you may not know that the first clock that in any way resembled those now in use was made by Henry Vick, in 1370. He made it for Charles V of France, who has been called 'The Wise.' "Now, Charles was wise m a good many ways. He was wise enough to recover from England most of the land which Edward III had con quered, and he did a good many other things which benefited France. But his early education ha 3 been some what neglected and he probably would have had trouble in passing a civil service examination in these en lightened ges. Still he had n repu tation for wisdom, and thought that it was necessary, in order to keep it up, that he should also be supposed to possess book learning. The latter was a subject that he was extremely touchy about. "So the story runs in this fashion, although I would not vouch for the language, but put it in that of the present day:" " 'Yes, the clock works well,' said Charles, 'but,' being anxious to find some fault with n thing he did not understand, you have got tbe figures on the dial wrong.' " " 'Wherein, your Majesty?' asked Vick." " 'That four should be four ones,' said the king." "You are wrong, your Majesty,' said Vick." " 'I am never wrong,' thundered the king. 'Take it away and correct the mistake!' and corrected it was, and from that dav to this 4 o'clock on a watch or clock dial has been IIII instead of IV. The tradition has been faithfully followed. The Closing of an Important Outlet. The blockade of a rort is not more injurious to its commerce than is oven the temporary obstruction of the bowels to the health of the syatem. Constipation necessarily arrests the seoretion of bile, impedes and disorders di gestion, and poisons the circulation. The safest and most ofFectivo. as it is also the most genial, laxative and anti-bilious medicino in existence is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, and it is more than probablo that its sovereign efficacy as a proventivo and remedy for inter mittent and remittent fever is largely duo to its reformatory action upon the liver, an or gan prejudicially involved in all malarial complaints. Persons with a tendency also to rheumatic, neuralgic and kidney troublo can not do better than to antagonize it with Hos tetter's Stomach Bitters, which invariably chocks it at the outset. The weak, moreover. are invested with strength by this line mvi orant. A man in Sedalia stole a horse for tbe pnrpose of getting a term in the nenitentiary. He cravo bb his reason for so doing that he might reform, as he bad been running about the coun try for three years and had grown very wild. A lady from Ithaca, the birthplace of ex-governor Cornell and his wife", told me yesterday, says a New York letter, a good story apropos of the perils of wedded-life, which the gov- firnnr tnlrl nfc bis nwn prnotisp Tt seems that when in office at Albany J he would sometimes return home late . at night, after his wife had retired. and when she asked him what time it ! was would answer: "About 12," or j "a little aner midnight." Uuc even ing instead of making the inquiry, she said: "Alonzo, I wish you would stop that clock; I cannot sleep for its noise." All unsuspicious, he stopped the pendulum. In the morning while dressing, Mrs. Cornell inquired art lessly: "Ob, by the way, what time did you get home?" ''About mid night," replied the governor. "Alon zo. look it that clock!" The hands of the clock pointed to 2:30. The gov ernor was crushed. It is reported by those who think they know whereof they speak that the timber land and pre-emption acts will be repealed at the next session of congress. Whether or not these prophets are correct we can nob say, but certain it is that nearly every body believes them and all who have the ready money are striking out for and investing in tall timber. If cou gress should repeal these acts all timber lands would be worth at least S10 per acre in less than a year, and in choice locations more than double that sum. Those who have not yet exercised tbeir rights should make baste to secure 160 or more acres of Uncle Sam's property before the game is withdrawn from the market. ltosebury Plaintlealtr. A Fact north Knowing. No mere cathartic can excit any action uion the Liver, yet many persons of bilious habit are continually dosing themselves to produce actions which only weaken the bowels and aggravate the evil. When the Liver requites stimulating the precise agent to give healthful and prolonged impetus is Sim mons Liver Regulator. It is a safe me dicine to take, being purely vegetable. There is no danger from salivation or from exposure. A Pennsylvaniau editor has dis covered tbat everything in nature is playful. He says: "The lightning plays, the wind whistles, the thunder rolls, the snow flies, the waves leap and the fields smile. Even the trees shoot and the rivers and streams ruu."
