A Gun Pence.
It is common to hear about "a solid
wall of bayonets" in war time, but at
the barracks is a veritable wall of
them now. "When the late war was
declared off the Union government
found itself in possession of a vast
number of muskets, useless, because
there was nobody to be shot with
them. They were stored up for a
while in various, arsenals, until radi
cal improvements mado them utterly
worthless. And when an old gun
cets worthless it is the most intense
ly worthless thing extant. So these
guns that cost millions were not
worth paying rent for storing. At
this place n fence was built with them.
The gun'barrels, with bayonets fixed,
were stood up four inches apart for
a Quarter of a mile, and then secured
bv bars of iron, forged from old guns,
with holes pierced to admit the old
muskets. It i3 the most formidable
fence I ever saw. The bayonets,
which in many instances have given
death wounds, are rusted now until
they could not be removed from tne
barrels. The posts of this unique
old fence are of old cannon. of,

In the state of Illinois it is said
that nearly 8,000,000 acres of farming
lands are encumbered, the mortgages.
aggregating the enormous sum of
S124.000.000. Michigan, a stnte not
near so wealthy as Illinois, has mort
gages on her farm lauds aggregating
over 130,000,000, and we are told
that taking the state as a whole, one
half of the farms are mortgaged, and
in some portions fully three-fourths.
Such ficures are terribly significant.
What a sickeuing story they toll of
ill-paid labor, of pinching economy,
of actual want! And yet there are
seotions of the country worse oil by
far than Illinois and Michigan not
one, but many and some of them
whero not only does the mortgage
rest upon the farm, but the crop is
usually pledged long in advance of
the harvest.

The British matron has at last suc
cumbed to the attractions of her own
music halls. Those most agreeable
places of entertainment, where the
singing of old ballads and new fancies
is so delightfully done, have always
been regarded as highly improper
with sufficient reason, perhaps. But
now women have begun to go in the
boxes only. But they-are still there
wives, daughters and sisters of re
spectability unqnestidnable.
