LUOIUDY'S TUBtf,
And "She Took It With a Vengeance.
A pair of elderly, healthy looking
meu and a limp looking1, broken
spiritecTwoman in a calico dresa and
a bonnet fashionable before the war,
appeared in a lawyer's office up town
one day last week.
One of the men said that they
wanted a deed made out, and then he
turned to his companion and they
discussed the details of the trafe they
were about to' make.
The meek looking, heavy eyed little
woman tried to Bay something ouce
or twice, but her husband silenced
her with:
"Come, come, now, Loociudy; me
an' he can settle the bizness ourselves.
It hain't a woman's 'place to take a
baud iu a matter o' this kind.
She's got other fiah to fry. I'm doiu'
this tradin' myself. You jest sit still
till yer wanted."
Loocindy, thus admonished, "set
still." but she seemed a little less limp
and a trifle more spirited, while her
heavy eyes brightened a good deal
when her husband sa'd:
"Now, Loocindy, we're ready fer
yer. .list come along hyar au' scratch
yer name out in full on this blauk
line. That's all we waut of yer."
It was simply refreshing to see the
color come to Loocindy's cheeks, and
to note the firmness of her voice as
she said:
"I shan't do it, Cy."
"You shau't do what?"'
"I shan't sign my name to that
there deed."
"Why, good lawd, woman; that's
all I brnng you along fer!"
. "I know it, Cy, and I ain't a goin'
to-ao it."
"What in thunder do you mean?"
gasped out Cy. as he stared at Loo
cindy with his eyes like saucers and
his month wide open.
"I mean just what I say, Cy .Jack
son. Oh,youneedn't stare so at me,
Cy, It's my time to take a hand in
this trade. Cy, an' I'm goin' to do it.
It ain't often I get a chance to show
youTmofany consequence in this
world, but now I'll learn you that I
am!"
"Lookee here, Loocindy, I'm
blamed i I'm goiu' to stand this!
What ails you to go to cuttin' up
like this? Now, you put your name to
that deed an' have done with your

mine much as it's yours. I've dug
an' niggered harder'n you have, an'

"Forty million of men couldn't
make me sign without," she said
calmly, as she dropped into a chair.
"Loooindy!"
"Well, Cy?"
"I I blamed if I I what you
mean, carryin' on like this."
"I mean that I am going to have a
dollar or two in the bank I can call
my own, and some decent dndo.
Hand over the money, Cy, an' I'll
sign; an' I'll never sign without it."
Half an hour later Cy and Loo
cindy left the'office, Cy with a dazed
look on his livid face and Loocindy
with a serenely triumphant expres
sion on her's, as she walked away
with a roll of bills clutched tight in
her bony hand, and visions of a new
"alpacky" dress and a $5 bonnet and
a bank account of her own before her
glistening eyes. Her time had come,
without a doubt.

A Beminiscence of the Enthusiasm
Over Smuggler's Great Bace.
"Yes," said an old sport in oue of
the pool-rooms yesterday, "there is a
thrill about a horae race you cannot
get in any other way., , The thrill is
intensified just iu proportion as your
money has gone up on the event.
When Smuggler bent Goldsmith
Maid at Cleveland, back thirteen
years ago, 'he crowd almost destroyed
the grand stnud. Iu illustration of
the excitement which reigned, I re
call the actions of a preacher from
Ejkhart, who was present with a
friend. As the hordes were scoring,
the parson's friend, whose name was
Tracy, and who know about as much
of horses as he did of the glacial
period, remarked a belief that Smug
gler might wiu over the Maid. This
was about as probible to the exper
ienced turfer as a republic in Russia,
and.oue of the fraternity, overhearing
the remark, overflowed in a propo
sition." "I'll bet you $100 to 820 ho don't."
he said.
"The preacher was interested, but
somewhat shocked, and silently pro
tested by pinching Tracj '3 arm."
"The start was made, and with the
word 'go' the persistant sport renew
ed h's offer, but it didn't take. With
the horses on the backst retch nud
bnnchedhe came again, but Tracy
wasn't game. As they turned into
the stretch the astute Doblc, who was
behind the Maid, with the assistance
of American Girl, had gotten the
stallion into a pocket, but his driver,
taking all chauces, nulled him com
pletely up, and taking the center of
the track sent him for the wire like a
ghost. No horse for a furlong ever
made such speed beforo or since, and
as Smuggler came to the front with
the rush of a storm he carried the
spectators from their moutnl feet.
Every man was up .and yelling, and
the Elkhart preacher, -who must have
had latent sportiugblood in his veins,
forgetful of his pulfcit and pastorate,
was flourishing his cushion and
shrieking in reference to his last
propesition: 'Bet him, Tracy. Thun
der and clams! Bet with him. I'll
split with you on it "
"It was too late, though; so Tracy
aidn'fbet." K. C. Times.
