Trar National Federation of Labor has resolved that on the first, day of May, 1890, a demand will bo made all over the Union for the eight hours working day. If the movement is heartily entered into by all classes of working people, and if they stand by their demand, it is believed they will gain the day this time, although a like attempt failed in 1880. One of the leaders of the movement says it is a "peaceful, thoughtful and resolute expression of the extincts of humanity striving for the betterment of all the people." Many persons are looking thoughtfully and intelligently into the causes which leave hundreds of thousands unemployed and in pmv perisrn, even in America. One of the causes is believed to be the factory system. Mr. Carroll Wnglit, the labor commissioner, says it is estimated that each employe un der the factory system represents in 1882 at least fifty employes under the old individual system. For instance, 1,100 threads are now spun at the same time where a hundred years'ago only onehvas spun. Abram S. Hewitt recent' ly called attention to thef act that ma chinery is taking the place of muscle in our industrial processes, sometimes enabling one man to do the work of thousand. What will then become of the other 999? The national federation of labor are of opinion that tho eight hour working day will givo some of them a chance. For the first time in the history of nations, English has been used as the language of diplomacy. The Samoan negotiations at Berlin were in that Ian image. This was in deference to the Americans on the commission. Amer icans are the poorest linguists among nations, except the French, and rarely know any langniige but their own. Not Necessary to Believe This. Tho unfortunate Mr. Hill in this city is not the first man who has lived with a broken neck. In n certain North Carolina district, before the war, it was the practice to send to congress the man who could lift the heaviest weight "When the champion got the seat he held it until he was literally lifted out of it by a more muscular man. One gentleman won it by lifting two barrels of turpentine, but after holding it several terms no was challenged to contest with an op ponent who undertook to lift three barrels of turpentine at once. He did it, lifting one barrel with each hand anu a imru on ins ncaii, uui me ujiori broke his neck, or rather crushed the cervical vertebrae. The accident did not kill him andlie was elected to congress and served many terms, using an artificial support for his head. Of course the spinal cord was not in jurcu or he would have been para lyzed.-. F. Alia, 2G. A Real Estate Broker's Contract. It has not been definitely arranged as to when the steamer T. J. Potter is to start from the Sound for Astoria, but the matter will doubtless be settled in a very short time as it is desired to have her here during the first week of July. The prospect for heavy travel be tween here and the coast has never been brighter than for this season. The rouer is now being put in condition for her trip, but as the run is nearly always a smooth one she will have no difficulty in reaching her destination. This afternoon judge Stearns sev ered the matrimonial bonds between Mrs. M. E. Young and W. H. Young, on the ground of cruel treatment. The couple were married here in Octo ber. 1888. Counsel for A. J. Cody, convicted of mayneni, whose bail pending the su preme court's decision of the case was fixed at &,000, made application to judge Steams for a reduction of the security, but the court denied the petition.
