Deserted Villages That Were Once Alive With a Bristling Population. The other dav a representative uf flip Republican was on a Kio Grande train when the brakeman yelled ont in stento rian tenes: "Cleora." On looking out of the window only two houses could be seen. What a chance time has wrouoht! In Jnne of 1879 this same town was by far the largest pines between Canyon City nnd Leadvilie. Almost every conceiv able branch of business was represented, and in most of them there was active competition. IJouses were f,ing np as if by magic, and lumber commanded almost.a fabulous price. Saloons were iouna in almost every uiock, and dance balls were scattered about in profusion. But a month later the town concluded to move, and a few weeks Inter the ma jority of its residents had taken np their permanent auode in what is now the flourishing town of Salida. Colorado has many places with a his tory something similar to that of Cleora, which, by the wav. was named in honor of the belle of the Arkansas valley, Hiss Clebra Boyles. Hollinsvillo, near Caribou, was a boom ing place in lb, l, and town lots wero at a premium. Hundreds of people were prond to call it their home, nnd it was thought to be founded upon a rock. To day the rock is still there, but the popu Iation has fled to the fonr winds. "How is the town of Loraa. on the ltio Grande river getting on?" said a gen tleman yesterday who left the state in 1874. "I visited it just before I left the territory, and I thought it wonld likely make u good place." Jack rabbits have been jumping through the few renmn ins adobe buildings for years. Kit Carson had a population of utmost ayjuujieopie in ibtiu, ana the peculiarity about them was that the great majority of them resided in dngonts. When the railroad pushed on to Denver the follow ing year mo residents ot Kit u.irson headed the procession. Sunshino in 18.77 had a population of several thousand, while to-day thirois only a handful of people there. Buckskin Joe and Hall Valley, in Paik county, were once flourishing places, but about all that is left of them is their name. Weston tried to pnt on airs in 1879, at which time there were about 3, 000 people there. Tho post-office still remains, as do ono or two stores. Along the old stage road between Lead vilie and Aspen, at what was known as Independence in 1830 and for a few years thereafter, not a single soul is now living. Hundreds of deserted houses are now standing tenantless, and some of them are qnite pretentious. A news paper was once published in the corporate limits of the city, and the arm of tho Washington hand-press on which it was printed is now sticking out of the offlco window. The proprietor was too much disgusted to take it away, There was great excitement at Bonan za', in Saguache county, in 18S2. A daily Saper was published there by W. B Mc jnney, now of the Pueblo Press, and it was a good one, too. Everything boomed except the mines, and the tenderfeet pronounced it another Leadvilie. Four thousand people almost broke theirnecks to get. there, and ot an the number not a hundred now remain. There are man v other places in Color ado with histories similar to the towns mentioned. Some of them were kiUed by the onward march of railroads nnd others becauso the mines ronnd about did not have the value with which they were credited. For Hard Drinkers. DR. THE TEAI1T WAS STOPPED. How a Traveler Evaded a Railroad Regulation. Some time ago a friend of mine who was returning from a lon2 tour, discov ered that the train on which ho was trav eling did not stop at the station near which his home was. If he stayed on tho train he found that he would not bo able to reach home that night It so chanced that he knew the conductor of the train very well, and he asked him if he could suggest any way out of the dif ficulty. Tho conductor said that the rules of the road would not allow him to stop tho train at the way station in ques tion but ho said he thought ho knew a way by which tho gentleman could get out where he wished to. 'After we pass and are nearing the stition nt which you desiro to get out," said tho conductor. "I will come around and collect tickets, nnd yon will profess to be unablo io find ours. Then f shall, as tho rales of tho rond direct, pnt you off the train." The plan worked liko a charm. When the conductor eirao around tho passen ger appeared to be unable to lind his ticket, and tho former said ho was very sorry, bat ho would have to stop the train and put him off. But, unfortunately, a passenger silling in the next seat char itably volunteered to pay the gentleman's fare to Pittsburg. Here was n difficulty which neither the conductor nor passen ger had thought of. My friend, however, had tho nervo to immediately declaro that it was a matter of principle; that ho had piid for his ticketonco and didn't intend to pay for it again, or that anyone elso should pay it for him. Ho would rather be thrown from tho train I ban give- mi his idea of what was right. As tho tram reached tho station at which mv friend wished to alight, tho conductor pulled tho bell ropo and the train was stonyicd. Mv friend got off, said "thank you" to tin conduc tor under ins breath, and walking up to nisiiouse, wiucu was near tno station, stonued at tho rato mid wnvpi! his Itnnil- kerchief to tho philanthropic gentleman who had wished to pay his fare.
