ASTORIA. OREGON:
TUUKSDAY.
...JUNE 27.18S9.
1 Arir JM.
Astoria now enters upon a new era.
The advent o a transcontinental rail
road, now assured, gives an impetus
to business, a prominence to this sec
tion and an assurance of growth that
justify mutual congratulation.
"With all that is of promise in the
future, the letter, "Astoria Revisited,"
which appeared recently in Tun Asto-
bian, seems to have as much of truth
as humor or fiction in its statements.
The news published elsewhere this
morning is encouraging aud satisfac
tory to those who have labored for
years toward that result, and is an in
dex of rapid prosperity.
It is a question whether Astoria is
nrenared for this: whether she is
aware of her high destiny.
Now at the outset The Astoetan
argues as it alwavs has that we must
stand together, must cultivate har
mony, fraternity, public spirit.
"We have steadily declined to enter
into personal fights or wordy controv
ersies, believing that Mich squabbles
do not help the town, and preferring
to bend our energy toward all possi
ble effort in fostering and furthering
any public scheme or public project
for advancement of public interest
and the city's welfare.
This is believed to be a good course
to continue. Let the barking dogs con
tinue to bark: it pleases them and
hurts no man who is a man. Let us
aid all pnblic advancement so far as
in us lies, and prepare lirm social and
business foundations for the great and
prosperous city that is to occupy this
peninsula.
This new era makes possible much
that so far could only be hoped for
It opens the gateway of the lower
Columbia to the commerce of the in
terier: it places us in connection with
what has hitherto been "the outside
world,"' and adds value to every foot
of land in this sectien: it assuies the
inflow of capital seeking profitable in
vestment, of labor seeking profitable
empleyment: of geuuis, skill and in
dustry and the rapid development of
our great but hitherto only partially
developed resources.
ATitiALwill shortly take place in
New York harbor of the new steam
ship Evolution, which it the expecta
tions of the inventor, Dr. Walter M.
Jackson, arc realized, will inaugurate
a new era in steam navigation. This
vessel has no rudder, and is both
steered and propelled by a jetof water,
which will issue at the enormous pres
sure of 2,500 pounds to the square
inch, and the ship is expected to have
a speed of from thirty to forty miles
an hour. Many similar experiments
have been made to propel ships on
this principle, but all have failed; on
these previous attempts the aim of the
inventors was to use as large a jet of
water as jiossible at a low presure.
Dr. Jackson's plans provide that in
stead of a jet of five square feet area,
he uses one of only half a square inch
while he increases the velocity of the
water discharge from thirty reot per
second to one of COO feet per second.
This, in a nutshell, is the theory on
which Dr. Jackson bases his hopes of
success, which may result in a revo
lution in steamship navigation, espec
ially in the case of ships of war.

Embezzlers will no longer find Can
ada a harbor of refuge for them. The
AVheldon extradition act has become
a law, but the retroactive clause was
first stricken out. All embezzlers,
boodlers and other criminal refugees,
who have found an asylum in the Do
minion will be allowed to remain un
molested; but their ranks cannot be
recruited in the future. Fugitive
criminals who now cross the border
from the United States will do so at
their peril. Canada will surrender
them without reference to the pro
visions of extradition treaty. The list of
extraditable crimes embodied in the
Weldon act include every offense for
which America will ever desire to ask
for the return of a fugitive.
The latest enterprise of 13riti-.li cap
ital is the organization of a stock
companv to raise the French vessels
sunk in Aboukir bay by Nelson in
17!)8. Tradition says that the Orient,
on board which young Casabinanca
stood on the burning deck, contained
millions of siecie and two silver gates
taken from the great Cathedral at
Malta. That was before tho time
when Napoleon thought it necessary
to order the army to be religious.
Tnr. official figures of the United
States census in 1790 were 3,929,320,
of which number G05,G53 were slaves.
A short time after these figures ap
peared Capt. G. Imlay, a Virginian,
published an article in which he
placed the population of this country
in 1890 at C4,000,000, and was therefore
supposed by his friends to be a vision
ary. His prediction was surprisingly
accurate.
