The Oregonian has added to its
staff a Shakespeareian editor whose
sole business and nightly delight is to
preface articles in that journal with
quotations from Shakespeare. Im
mortal Shakespeare, dead nnd turned
to clay, all same Caesar, little thought
that an account of a Portland prize
fight (called a "city election") would
be'prefaced by his lines. "To snch
base uses may we come at last."
The jnry in the Olds trial for the
murder of Weber, disagreed last Sun
day 8 to 4. The Oregonian, edit
orially lays its finger on the exact
fact, in pointing out that the Portland
police are principally responsible for
Weber's murder in so acting as to en
courage Olds in "the deep damnation
of his taking off." In this the Ore
gonian incidentally throws a side
light on the political corruption exist
ent in that city.
John Kopp desires to express his
most grateful and sincere thanks to
the fire department nnd the citizens
generally for the zeal they nanifested
in the effort to save his property at
the burning ot his brewery last Satur
day night. He also wishes to thank
the members of the Western Amateur
band, and those who so gpuerously
subscribed toward the purchase of the
fine silver tuba, with which he was
presented last Saturday evening. In
a conversation with Mr. Kopp last
evening he expressed his intention of
starting in again. His credit is A 1,
and before long be expects to be again
in business. He deserves the substan
tial support of all his former patrons
in his courage under adverse circumstances.
"What impressed you moat during
your recent visit to Germany?" was
asked by an Astobian reporter of Jno.
Halm, jesterday afternoon. "The
fact," said he, "that so many women
were at work in the fields." He told
of women walking three miles, work
ing from dawn to dark, and then
walking back, for 16 cents a day.
He said one can get a fine meal in
Berlin for 9 cents. The thing is to
get the 9 cents. When he got to Ber
lin he found a splendid procession,
the cit all in hoh'day attire and
everything fixed up all same Fourth
of July. At first he thought maybe
it was'in honor of his arrival, but
later found that all the hurrah was
over the arrival that morning of ar
other sovereign the king of Italy.

There are more worthy charities for
the money of Salem's business men
than rump newspapers and blackmail
ing publications, and they know it,
and act accordingly. Advertising is
an investment. It is either a good
investment, an mdmerent one, or a
poor one. it it is in a sheet without
circulation or character, or in a sheet
that does not reach the constituency
of the advertiser, it is worse than
money thrown away; if it is in a sheet
of meagre circulation, poorly gotten
up and printed, it is an indifferent in
vestment, even at a lowprice; but if it
i3in a newspaper of acknowledged
circulation and influence, that is well
made up and printed, and that circu
lates amongst the people the adver
tiser desires to reach, it is a good in
vestment at a reasonable price. No
good business man can afford to ig
nore this fact, and no progressive bus
iness man in Salem does ignore it

A Trip to Xacottah
On Sunday through the kindness of
L. A. Loomis, president of tho I. and
S. B. railroad, an Astorian represent
ative took a trip to Narcottah, the
terminus of the road. Leaving As
toria at 9 a. m., Ilwaco was reached
two hours later, where the cars were
all in readiness to take the excursion
ists. Nacottah was reached at noon,
a large number stopping there to view
the beauties of the new town, while
others took the stages and left for Oys
terville, arriving in time for dinner.
At 4 o'clock the cars started on the
return trip, and on arriving at Ilwaco
the Ilwaco bras3 band was standing
in front of the Central hotel, playing
some lively music.
A saw mill is soon to be erected at
Nacottah, J. K. Morrison is putting
up a restaurant there. W. W. Wrard
is also putting up a saloon, this and new
little town will soon be putting on
metropolitan airs.
