Verdict for the Plaintiff.
From the Telegram it is learned
that the trial of theGoldsmith-Holmes
suit has terminated in the United S tatrs
circuit court by the jury bringing in a
veraict in lavor or the plaintiff. The
facts concerning this suit have been
reviewed comprehensively, and it is
only necessary to say that the plain-
tins sued to recover 5510,000 aud in
terest on a promissory note issued on
the 9th of August, 188G. bvW.P.
Owens, of Eoseburg. to Goldsmith &
Co, The defendants in this suit,
Holmes, UHlard and Phelps, subscrib
ed themselves as sureties for Owens,
whoafterward failed and committed
suicide. "When his estate was settled
up it was found that the note could
not be paid ont of the wreck, so a de
mand was made on the defendants to
make good the amount This they
refused to do, saying that they never
signed the note, and denounced the
signatures as forgeries. Last Decem
ber the case was tried and resulted in
a disagreement by the jury. This
time, however, the jury brought in a
verdict for the plaintiff, and Wednes
day morning the United States circnit
court gave Goldsmith & Co. judgment
for 810,000, with interest since the
date of the note.

An exchange says: How is it that
people will buy goods of any descrip
tion from strangers rather than
neighbors? Let a man who is known
in a community take an agency for n
steam engine; let a merchant well es
tablished, introduce something new
and really worth something, and some
how people imagine that if they pur
chase from liome acquaintances they
are purchasing at a disadvantage.
The same way with people rushing
away to do shopping. They seem to
think that dealers away off are the
most interested merchants on tho face
of the earth, and the result is that
for their overconhdence in such peo
ple they are duped in their dealings.
Stop at home, buy from men whose
interests are your interests and who
nave reputations at siase ngut wuere
you live. None of these mercantile
gushers will give you anything for
nothing and to tho irrepressible agent,
from afar, shun lum.
