The rainfall for July '85, iu Astoria was four-hundredths of one inch, and for August of that year, two-hun-dredths of one inch. Seattle has thus far received about 65,000 cash contributions from all parts of the country and the biggest kind of an advertisement During the heavy wind and tide which prevailed last week over thirty fish traps went adrift in Baker's bay, entailing considerable loss. When the Seattle fire started, IIo taling & Co. rolled' 100 barrels of whisky into the bay to save it. Two barrels were recevered: the rest is all safe. They say fleas are hatched from eggs. That's funny, for one wouldn't think that a ilea could sit still long enough to lay an egg, let alone hatch ing it The dry weather continues. Seems a long time doesn't it, since that three cornered storm flag waved from the battlements that o'ertop the Pythian castle? Dr. Bill, now in Paris, under date of May 26th, writes to his mother, Mrs.' Dr. Owens-Adair, regarding the great universal exposition, and sends her some splendid illustrations of that spectacle. An exchange iertinently remarks: 'Those people who are always think ing that the newspapers are 'hitting' at them, are advised to look through the Bible; they will find many flings at them in the good book." There is a man in town who wants to give a balloon exhibition on the Fourth. From the way he was talking- yesterday it appears that he wouldn't have to call on the gas com pany for any inflation on that day. Some one whose maternal descent would compare unfavorably with the dog's has stolen another fine dog. The creature who would steal or poison a man's dog would be greatly flattered by being called a condemned thief. An irate Chinese murderer tore two handfuls of beard from the chin and cheeks of E. W. Klipstein in San Francisco last Friday. The Chinaman had' tried to kill the mistress of the bouse and Klipstein caught and held him till the police came. An envelope with an embossed post age stamp, not stuck on with mucil age, may-be carried outside of the reg ular mails by railroads, steamboats, expresses, stages, and other modes of conveyance, having an advantage over ordinary stamped envelopes. The captain of the schooner Gertie Story, at Port Townsend, says: -'On thearluk river I saw drawn in with one haul of the seine 31,500 salmon of an average weight of nine pounds, aggregating HI tons of fish." The captain, evidently, told the last story. Kev. J. Aimer of Portland and Rev. C. A. A man who claims to know, says here is the proper way to cook shad: First clean, not soak them, cut them open in the back, then spread them out flat, and sprinkle about two tea spoonfuls of salt on eachfish. Let them stand for five or six hours, then broil brown, and serve with butter or cream, and you have a dish, excelled omy iy tne iresn macKerel. Manv have seen and "admired a nin. ure which says: "Dogs will be dogs." The truth of the saying was strikingly shown in front of Dement's drugstore. A dog drawing a little wagon came rattling down Cass street and turned the corner, where he -was bounced by anoiner aog. .Regardless 01 tne wagon, the harness, the boy in the wagon and the entire outfit, he rose on his hind legs and flung himself on the attack ing dog, and for a minute there was a circus, till things got straightened out, and the harnessed dog again trotted down the street, drawing the boy in the wagon, but with a look in his eye as though he thought in his dog brain, "I don't allow no ornery brute to tackle me, even it I do wear har ness." "Dogs will be dogs." While returning from Shoalwater bay last Saturday, says the Chehalis Vidette, district attorney Moody picked up a lobster on 'the beach be tween North Cove and Peterson's. Lobsters do not exist in any quanti ties along this coast. An attempt has been made several times to plant them in San Francisco bay, without any marked success. It is supposed they gradually drifted north to cooler waters, and that the one found by Mr. Moody had worked its way up the coast Several specimens have re cently been found in Shoalwater bay. Wo believe if the lobsters were intro duced into Gray's harbor they would thrive and improve upon the original specimens deposited. This has been true of the eastern clams which were planted in the harbor several eara ago. Stale Teachers' Association. The state teachers' association will be held at Salem, Jul 1, 2 and 3, 1889. The bear looks better; the man dosen't look so welL Wrestling with a bear all day must be wearing on the mental faculties. There are no new features in the shew: it is a sort of catch as catch can, but it looks as though the man had some understanding, some tacit agree ment with the bear that neither should hurt the other too much or handle him with undue roughness. They are careful of each other as though they were champion pugil ists. That the bear is a bad bear to fool with was shown yesterday afteroon on Flavel's dock. Atone stage of the performance an individual who had just finished playing "Ten nights in a barroom" swore that he could tackle and throw that bear. He was given a chance, but the bear gave him a clip of his paw and downed Mr. Man, and was going to make examination of his innards when the man scrambled up and made off, the bear on his trail for a little ways.
