The schooner Zampa arrived in yesterday, fourteen days from San irancisco. The British bark Assaue sailed for Queenstown yesterday. She carries U7.443 bus. -wheat, worth 352,600. The man who sold the 3,000 feet rubber hose to the San Francisco fire department for 87 cents a foot is in iue cuy. The band excursion to Cathlamet is indefinitely nostnnnpf! TJinaA wlir purchased tickets can get their money uacit on aemana. Aman was in yesterday offering cigars for a dollar a box. His in ability to furnish a chunk or corned beer spoiled one sale. The excursionists to SkiDanon. Tanzy point and the jetty had a first rate time yesterday, and every body spent a aeugntiui aay. There is no thoroughfare on the roadway to Union town now, the planks having been torn up and dis connection made west of the electric works. A private letter from Kodiak. Al aska, reports a rough trip of the steamer Bertha to that point; the letter was written May 16th, and the thermometer men stood nt bU Yesterday about noon while the steamer Mamanillo was on the way to Portland and when near Cedar landing one of the deck hands, name unknown, fell over board and was drowned, all attempts to rescue the unfortunate man being futile. The commissioners appointed to view the line of tho proposed county road have returned; their report will be filed with the county court and Will lift ftflTlSlrlArPfl nf. ifja rfltmldi- dm. sion in July, when all parties desirous can appear regarding tne same. The ladies of the Presbyterian church desire to announce that they will give a picnic to Clatsop, on the first, regular, train over the Astoria and South Coast railway. The date will be announced as soon as arrange ments can be made with the railway company. The tidal observer at St Paul, Ko diak island says: "As regards the coming of the fish upon this coast, red salmon made their appearance at the island of Little Afognak on the 22dof March; herring appeared at St Paul, Kodiak island, on the 12th of April and red salmon on the 11th of May." A Dubuque, Iowa newsboy lately got even with a dead-beat. The man owed the boy for papers and would not pay him. The boy wrote to his (the boy's) brother, who is attending school in Indiana, telling about the action of the customer, and one day last week the man received a box by express marked "C. O. D." The ex press charges amounted to several dollars, and upon opening the box it was found to be full of bricks. A correspondent of the Hillsboro Independent, , writing to that paper from Gales City, says: "A civil en gineer, with a party of our citizens, has been looking out a pass around Saddle mountain for the Astoria rail road. I think, from all that I can learn, that the road will bo built on the shortest practical route. It may be the Saddle mountain route or it may be the Nehalem route. But either route will bring it down Gales creek, so we feel pretty sure our town will be favored with railroad communication soon." HE FOLLOWED SUIT. The transition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life of the indi vidual. Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and the agencw wnereoy tue gooa neaitn nas Deen at tained is gratefully blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Hitters. So many feel tucy owe their restoration to health to the use of the Great Alterative and Tonic. EXPLAINED AND DEFENDED. An Exhaustive Address on Transportation Questions. Henry Villard addressed the citi zens of Portland at the New Park the ater last Friday evening. Ho spoke of the past, of Oregon a growth, and of the Oregon & Trans continental company. He claimed that that company was a tower of financial strength, a rock of refuse. and a necessary element in the rail road situatien: that the O. & T. had fnminiiori sinmnmn r.f !. swn nnn 000 that the d.B.' & N. Co. had" ex pended in the development of its sys tem of railroads, and restocking tho steamship line, and that had it not been for the O. &. T. Co., the N. P. B. B. could not have been completed in XB83. He entered into personal explana tion of his relations with the O. R. & N. Co., the N. P. and the O. & T., and an agreement that had been made and violated, regarding the control of tne rormer company, and elicited ap plause by saying that he and tho cap ital he represented would to-morrow, the 17th, by virtue of a majority of the stock to be voted, take possession of the O. & T. Co., and through it of tne u. It. & M. uo. He spoke for an hour and a half and evidently created a favorable impres sion by the positive nature ot his re marks and his implied friendliness for Portland, saying that he had al ways been its friend, and as a victor in the fight he could afford to bo mag nanimous. An additional fourteen thousand dollars was yesterday subscribed to the 3100,000 by Mr. Grimes, of the Seaside. This fills out the requisite 8100,000 to secure the 8,000 feet of water frontage for terminal facilities conditionally proffered by CoL Taylor in exchange for paid up stock and leaves several thousand dollars to ap ply to the original 875,000 subscrip tion. . Contraots, pending, can now bo signed and the work on bridge, ma terial, eta, can be unremittingly pros ecuted. The start is always the hardest. After this and one or two other roads to and from Astoria' are bnilt, it will be easier to raise money and induce sub scriptions. Some o'f us haven't had much personal experience with rail roads and it takes a long time to get started, but once started the work nlways goes right on. With plenty money in the treasury, thirteen miles of railroad iron, bought, the grading all done, work on the bridge begun, rolling stock contracted for, it begins to look to the doubters and unbelievers as though the Astoria & South Coast railroad was an assured fact. Look out for the locomotive when tho bell rings. . THE FOURTH OF JULY. A Fond or Thirteen Hundred Subscribed. Dollare A meeting of the Fourth of July committee was held at Rescue's engine room last evening. The 1st ward committee on finance reported that they had collected 8900, and assured the committee that they would make it a thousand dollars. The 2nd ward committee reported that they had col lected 8293, and would collect S3a50 more. Sam'l Elmore having declined acting as marshal, on motion O. H. Stockton was duly elected. He appointed as his aids P. W. Weeks, C. J.Trenchard, J. W. Hume, Aug. Danielson and W. A. Sherman. Wm. Johnson and P. W. Weeks were appointed to receivo entries for all boat races. The chairman of the committee on printing and advertising reported that advertisements had been placed in each of the city papers, the Ore gonian, the Pacific Journal, St. Hel en's Milt, Cathlamet Gazette, and tliat 2,000 illuminated posters had been printed to bo distributed on the boats and sent to different localities on each side of the river. On motion, adjourned to meet to morrow evening nt 7 sharp, when all officers and committees are requested to lw present nnd report progress. Benefit of Company "H," O. N. (J. Ross' Opera house was crowded to the doors last evening the occasion being a benefit given to Co. "H," O. N. G.,Jby the Chicago Comedy company which have appeared every evening during tho week to large and enthu siastic audiences. The play "Facing tne iinemy" was produced on n grand scale, the applause' being immense. In the second act company "II" ap peared in the manual of arms and skirmish firing under the command ot Val. RLove who drilled the bojsin first class style eliciting great applause. But the best part of tho scene was when tho alarm was given whore our militia boys seizing their arms rushed to the rescue of tho Union soldiers, which was done in regular military style amid the deafening applause of tno audience. The manager JUr. J. Pietrich deserves credit for brinsrinc such a fine company and playing to such reduced prices. Telephonel.odKtn- floiicie. Best Beds in town.
