m mjiAJiii--PjCT-a.i- i i guUij gtftotfau. ASTORIA, OEEGON: SATUF.DAY- -MAY 25, 1889. JUST FOR INSTANCE. WE listened -with some annoyance yesterday to a man -who has done business in this city for several years, and who has done fairly well. By "fairly well" we mean that he has got out of debt, owns his own house, and could, probably, in 30 days time, pro duce S5.000 in coin of his own. This is not so bad, and is at least average prosperity. For fifteen minutes this man railed at Astoria, its lack of en terprise, its want of progress, its 'inossback" and its general apathy. Every time he got in a lick at As toria he mentioned n neighboring city where everything was so different, and where matters were so univer sally attractive, and then he would again "go for" Smith and Brown and JonesJandBobinson, and all the rest for not being at the head of tho proces sion that is filing into the office of the secretary of the Astoria and South Coast road to take some more stock. Then he branched off again about the town being "no good," and timo3 being "dull," and "somebody" ought to do "something," and so on for as long as "any one would listen to him, and said half a dozen times the town was "going to the dogs." To argue with the class that he so loudly rep resents would be of no avail. But we sometimes wonder if such a man sees how ridiculous he makes himself or how completely he him self contradicts what he says by what he does. If Astoria h such a desolate and God forsaken place, why does he re main: why does he waste his time here, when ho can do so much better in that wonderful city just across the line where people refuse to pick up tho silver lying in the streets on ac count of the superior value of the gold that they find in their path? If this man speaks the truth he is a fool for not going away. If ho doesn't, he is a liar for his falsehood. In either case he is an ass, for want of human sense. Now, designating this individual as a fool or a liar or an ass, is simply a gentlemanly and courteous designa tion of a contemptiblo class that take delight in belittling and running down this city where they live and are doing better than they ever expected to do in all their miserable lives. They wax fat and wealthy yet spend their spare time in doing their little best or worst to pull down the- fabric that gives them comfort and susten ance. Fortunately tho few that listen, laugh, realizing the futility of reply, but as mosquitoes and fleas annoy, bo do these insects vex the souls of those who want to no ahead and see the town prosper. Whether saint or Binner; rich be yond the dreams of avarice or poor as Lazarus; powerful as a potentate or powerless as a palsied pensioner; beau tiful as a poet's dream or ugly as a hellish Sycoras; gifted as a genius or dull as a clod; ambitious as an Alex ander or contented as a mele: youand I and all of us are here, right hero, or there, right there, just because we, in dividually, don't know where we can do any better, all things being equal. "We all seek happiness: that which bring3the most happiness, real or fancied, that we de: if a man finds his happiness in gambling ho gam bles, if a woman in gadding about she gads abeut: if a merchant in selling goods, or a mechanic in turning out good work, or a hotel keeper in set ting a good table, or a canneryman in packing good salmon, or another man in making money, or anything else that any one does whether he plays poker or preaches the gospel, he is doing what he is doing because he takes more pleasure in that than he would in doing any thing else. If you who read this and very likely differ and disagree with what it says knew of any place where all things being equal you thought you would have more happiness, you would leave husband or wife or business or house or property or anything else, and go there. The fact that you stay here fifteen minutes or fifty years shows that during that time you didn't know of any other place where you thought you could be as happy as you are here. People stay whero they are, whether Astoria or Asia, for a variety of rea sons with which they fool or justify themselves, but whether from Tiope or fear or courage or cowardice or ava rice or timidity or what the .fancied influence, the real reason npplyi.sr to all ages, classes and conditions is the pursuit and desire of happiness; that phantom that eludes those who seek it most diligently: that has been sought by nil from Adam down to Geo. Francis Train, and that will be followed by the millions who will tread this earth when all now living shall have faded like a cloud "of the morning into tho illimitable aznro of idfinity. ffiEGRAP m Specials to The Astorian. Jones is dragging itself wearily along in Judge Shattuck's court. Up to four o'clock this afternoon, thirteen wit nesses for the plaintiff had been ex amined and how many more are to be placed on tho stand could not exactly be determined. The defense will in troduce none but expert testimony. There is a posibility that there will be a session of the court to-night. FEABS OF BLOODSHED. St. Joilvs, N. B. May 21. The com mander of the British ship Lily has issued a proclamation that ho would not allow Newfoundland fishermen to set nets or catch herring. Two thousand people live in George's bay and export the catch to Canada. PAID A SMALT, AMOUST. London, May 24. Robb & Parker, Live Real Estate Agents, ASTORIA, - - OREGON. OCEAN CURRENTS. Man of the Coast Survey to Ascertain Their Power and Direction. Lieutenant Pillsbury, U. S. N., in command ot the coast survey steamer Blake, is about to befe'in an interest ing experiment in relation to ocean currents. Under instructions ho will set adrift a number of sub surface current-floats, each consisting of a lj-inch square white-painted pine staff, about eight feet long, pro jecting from one to two feet above tho surface, surmounted Dy a simple tin wind-vane, and with four galvanized sheet-iron wings at the lower end to receive the impulse of the ocean cur rents at a depth of six or seven feet below the surface, and cause it to unit with the sub-sunace cur rents and be substantially exempt from tho influenced winds or surface-currents. The staff carries five glass water-tight tubes, each held in a mortise by easily unfastened copper- wire. .Each tube incloses an envelope, addressed to "tho Superintendent Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washing ton, D. C." containing a leaflet printed in English, German, Spanish and French, showing the date and locality of the first launching of the float and giving instructions to the finder as to filling the blanks with the date and locality at which he found it. Any person rinding one of tho lloats is re spectfully and earnestly requested to remove from it one of the glass tubes and immediately set the float adrift again, so that it may continue to float with currents until intercepted again and another tube removed by some other finder, and so on until it is fin ally lost or all its tubes removed. Each finder should break or open the tube carefully, read, and follow tho directions of the printed leaflet, by writing in the proper blank spaces the date and locality at which he found it, either afloat or ashore, ap pending his own signature and ad dress, inclosing it in the accompanying envelope and forwarding it to the nearest United States consul, or mailing it to the superintendent ot the coast and geodetic survey, as addressed. In view of the im portancej to safety of navigation, of all items of information as to the direc tionand velocity of ocean currents, all mariners and people along shore are urgently requested to contribute to the success of this feature of their in vestigation by intercepting and re launching a float wherever seen, and carefully complying with the foregoing suggestions.
