This morning an old man named Connelly stabbed his son's 'wife with a broken case knife in an attempt to murder her. The old man has been living for some time with his son's family, and their relations have always been unpleasant, but his eccentricities were overlooked by his son and wife, because lie wa3 known tfcbe of unsettled mind. He is probably insane. The woman has a ghastly wound which may prove fatal, but she is resting easy now. Dr. C. H. Wheeler secures a divorce from his wife. Capt. J. W, Troup says the Alas Jean's hull was perfectly seund: she was inspected just before she left by J. C. Ferguson, inspector of hulls, and pronounced sound in every par ticular. There is much enjoyment here over the wreck of the tram carrying a portion or Jjibby prison to Chicago, and the fact that relic hunters have carried away many of the bricks, eta The op position to the removal is as deep now as when it was first suggested, and the brag is now made that the build ing put up in Chicago will not be a complete representation of the old prison. Missing bricks must be re placed by new ones. The larger por tion of the building stands here yet. The negro hack drivers have been much agitated over the contemplated removal in view of the fact that many strangers desire to be driven to Libby prison. They have reached the con clusion, however, that they can still work the site of the building. SINGULAR PHENOMENON. A Well That Breathes Each Way. El Paso, Tex., May 18. The Texas and Pacific company sank, a bored well some years ago near Eagle Flat station, about 110 miles east of El Paso, in a fruitless endeavor to obtain arte sian water. The well was abandoned when it had been bored over 800 feet, but the tubing is still intact in it. This abandoned well has proved to be a remarkable natural phenomenon. For twelve hours each day a furious gust of air rushes into the tubing, and the next twelve hours an equally strong gust rushes out This occurs with the utmost regularity, and so far no break has been noticed in the reg ular occurrence. At first it was claimed that the air coming out from the well was highly magnetized, but later investigations have failed to prove the correctness of this assertion. Editor Clngstone'.s Revense. 'Mr. Clugston," said the foreman of the Doodleville Yelpcr office, "the Pinhook Jigger says you didn't have money enough to pay the express on your patent insides last week and had to snin around among Uia merchants for a loan of forty cents before jou could get 'em ont of the express office and go to press." Mr. Clugaton, the editor and pro prietor of the Yclper, calmly sat down and wrote the following withering article: "doc reeves, the half-baked imbecile doc reeves, the thundering gourd head doc reeves, the pusilanimou3 donkey that afflicts the good people of Pinhook with a miserable apology ot a thumb paper he calls the 'Jigger,' says but who the Sam Hill cares what doc reeves says!" "There," said editor Clugston, as he leaned back in his chair, exhausted, "that'll finish the cuss." Electric Bitters. A Cabd to the Public: I feel that I would not be doing my duty to wo man kind if 1 did not let them know how badly afflicted I have been and how and where to be cured. Ten years ago 1 was taken with painful menstru ation, and I have been troubled that way since that time, accompanied with troubles in every conceivable way. About three months ago the climax came, and l was prostrated with pain through the heart, chest and lungs. and confined to my bed from ex cessive hemorrhage or flowing. After nine doctors of different schools of practice gave me up. I applied to Dr. Darrin, and he has cured me so I can walk from my residence to his office. I am overjoyed with the result of the cure. Mrs. E. A. Ahlf. The following tribute to the gift and skill of Drs. Darrin is a remarkable instance of a generous impulse worked out against professional prejudice, anu is wortny ot recerd: Cabd to the Public. I have for the past two years been afflicted with enronic pericarditis, accompanied with great pain around the heart all that tune, with excessive circulation, sleep less nignts, tear and distress. 1 was unable to attend to the duties of my profession. I had exhausted niv knowledge of medicine, as also that of my colleagues, and found no relief until coming under the electromagnet ic treatment of Drs, Damn. A little more than a month elapsed since received tins treatment and J. can truthfully say that I am cured. I have none of my former trouble, and wish thus to give my personal experience in the in terest ot humanity. 1 have been a practicing physician fourteen ears, and am well known in this city and Marshfield, Oregon. I deem it but justice to the public and to Drs. Darrin to write the above. Dr. Steele, the doctors imiace of business. Drs Darrin can be consulted free at the Occident hotel. Astoria. At Miss Emma Warren's Private School' Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, the seatinir capacity of Miss Warren's tastefully decorated school room was not sufficient to ac commodate the patrons and friends as sembled to witness the closing exer cises on Friday afternoon. The pro gramme, consisting of recitations, read ings, essays, duets and choruses, was interesting and instructive. The pupils acquitted themselves most creditably in their several parts, many being deserving of special men tion. The dumb-bell exercises were excellent, one drill being given by the boys and anotner by the girls, in cos tumes of navy blue made for the oc casion. At the close the pupils in attendance wera awarded certificates of deport ment ana standing ror the term just ended. Miss Warren mentioned Otto Prael. Annie Belknap. Annie Callendar. Geo. Stevens, Nellie Levings and Albert Lieighton, as being also deserving of certificates, these latter having been unable to complete the term because of sickness or on account of engaging in otner occupations. In bidding her pupils farewell Miss Warren urged them to persistent fu ture etiort, and expressed a desire to see as many as possible in their ac customed places at the re-opening of sciiooi m September. The rolls show fifty nunils in attend ance, ana tne studies pursued embrace tnose ot tne primary and grammar de partments, as well as geometry, alge bra, rhetoric, ancient history, physiol ogy, eta Miss Warren is to be congratulated upon the success of her labors among us for the past few years. By pains taking effort she has established for her school a most enviable reputation. m . A LTJCKT TRIAL.
