ASTORIA. OREGON:
THURSDAY..
-MAY 10, 1889.
KINDLY MEANT.
The Oregonian disclaims knowl
edge of any one in Portland who
wouldn't be glad to see a railroad con
structed to Astoria, and expresses
preference for the river as furnishing
in the hot season a more enjoyable
route from Portland this way. It
further declares that the remark ,"the
malaria-soaked inhabitants of- the
interior ' is "a rhetorical expression,"
"designed as an invitation or exhor
tation" to those thus unfortunately
afflicted to come here and spend their
money. It also believes that we are
in error "in supposing that any rail
road couldofler as many attractions
or as cheap fares as the great Colum
bia." Possibly not, to the inhabitants of
Portland, but to those who live south
of there, and who without n railroad
are compelled to go to Portland to get
on the great Columbia, it is believed
a direct road across one side of the
triangle instead of following two sides
to the same objective point would be
an appreciated convenience.
In geometry as in argument, a
straight line is the shortest distance
between two points.
The rhetorical attributes of the
article which has elicited pleasant
criticism from the Oregonian, are
believed to be secondary to the truth
of the statements, but we hasten to
disavow the sordid intent ascribed to
us by our esteemed metropolitan
brother.
The remark about the malaria
soaked inhabitants of the interior,
was not designed as a suggestion to
Portland residents to reduce their
surplus, but rather in the interests
of sanitary science, by gently directing
attention to their confessedly deplor
able condition, and still more gently
suggesting pleasant and adequate alle
viation of their manifest miseries.
Sidney Smith once anathematized a
gentleman who had spoken disrespect
fully of the equator. Far be it from
us to be wanting in proper respect to
the great Colunbia, or the majestic
Mr. Mood, auu we have profound re
gard for the Willamette and other
geographic.il peculiarities.
But while recognizing the superi
onty or boats xver railway cars in
the hot season, and while regretting
the unfortunate combination of
thermal vagaries with humidity that
makes the remark "the malaria
soaked inhabitants of the interior5
an atmospheric fact, we believe that
the large number of people outside of
Portland and yet within tho circle
comprised by that indefinite word
"interior," would find use and oppor
tunity in a railroad to the sea.
As for summer visitors we welcome
the coming and speed the parting
guests; glad to see them and sorry
they can't stay longer; rejoice to note
the wan and sallow visage again bloom
with the flush of health born of cool
and sleepful nights; and would gladly
extend the privilege to those of the
"malaria-soaked interior" who do not
enjoy the boon of easy access to the
great Columbia and who must per
force wait for a railroad to Astoria, or
suffer a joyless journey to the pleasant
city on the Willamette in whose pride
and prosperity we heartily rejoice.
. .
The decision of tho supremo court
of the United States confirming the val
idity of the Scott exclusion act, is of
great importance to this coast. It ex
cludes Chinese laborers, and under
this decision, no matter if a Chinese
laborer has a return certificate, he can
not return and enter this country.
A Minnesota man has set up a
bear ranch, where he feeds cornnieal
to the bears he traps just as he would
do hog3 till they are in prime condi
tion, when he slaughters them, and,
beside selling the meat at high figures,
gets a good many dollars for each of
the pelts.
The Tide is Turning.
When the tide is running out it
looks as if it would always run one
way, but nothing is more certain than
that it will turn and run in again;
and so it is with commercial tides.
For two or three years it has been
ebb tide, but the signs are accumulat
ing that 1889 is going to be a good
uusmess year. American Urocer.
A Scrap ofaper Saves Jttcr life
It was just an ordinary scrap of wrap-

told by physicians that she was incura

she weighed Ies than seventy pounds.
na piece of wrapping paper she read
of Dr. King's New Discovery, and got a
sample bottle; it helped her, she bought
a larger bottle, it helped her more,
bought another and grew better fast,
continued its use and is now strong,
healthy, rosy, plump, weighing 140

NINE DOCTOES FAILED.
Remarkable Cares How they were Done
by an Advertising Doctor.
A Cabd to the Public: I feel that
I would not be doing my -duty to wo
man kind if I did not let them know
how badly afflicted I have been and
how and where to be cured. Ten years
ago 1 was taken with painful menstru
ation, and I have been troubled that
way since that time, accompanied with
troubles in every conceivable way.
About three months ago the climax
came, and I was prostrated with pain
inrongn tne neart, chest and lungs,
and confined to my bed from ex
cessive hemorrhage or flowing. After
nine doctors of different schools of
practice gave me tip, I applied to Dr.
.uarnn, ana ne nas cured me so 1 can
walk from my residence to his office.
I am overjoyed with the result of the
cure. Mrs. E. A. Ahlf.
The followine tribute to the rift and
skill of Drs. Darrin is a remarkable
instance of a generous impulse worked
out against professional prejudice,
ana is wormy or recerd:
Uabd to the i'TOLic. I have for
the past two years been afflicted with
chronic pericarditis, accompanied with
great pain around the heart all that
time, with excessive circulation, sleep
less nights, fear and distress. I was
unable to attend to the duties of my
proiession. i had exhausted my
knowledge of medicine, as also that of
my colleagues, and found no relief
until coming under the electromagnet
ic treatment of Drs. Darrin. A little
more than a month elapsed since I
received this treatment, and I can
truthfully say that I am cured.
I have none of my former
trouble, and wish thu8 to
give my personal experience in the in
terest of humanity. I have been a
practicing physician fourteen years,
and am well known in this city and
Marshfield, Oregon. I deem it but
justice to the public and to Drs.
Darrin to write the above.
Dnv Steele.

The Intelligent Florida Voter.
Some queer answers were elicited
during an examination of witnesses
in a contested election case in Florida.
"Who was the Republican candidate
for congress in this district?" was
asked. Answer "I don't know."
"Would you know tho name if men
tioned?" "Yes, sir." "Was it Robert
Ingersoll?" "Yes, sir. dat's de man."
"Well, who was tho Democratic can
didate?" "I don't know, sir." "Was
it John Sherman?" "Yes, sir, dat's de
very man." Well, what is congress?"
"1 don t know, sir." "is it a man or
a woman?" "I think it is a woman.
"What kind of a woman?" "A black
woman."
HE FOLLOWED SUIT..
My wife has been under physicians
care for two years, for what they called
"liver complaint." She would get some
relief while takius prescriptions, tr
would soon fall back into the same
drowsy, inactive state. 1 1 got her a botlle

immediate good, and when three bottle
had been taken she regained her old ac:
