11 $ gmltj gustodau. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY. .MAY 11.1839. -4 FEW WORDS. TnnitE mil be another meeting at Koss' opera house this evening. The Astomax suggests that some one con nected prominently -vrith the Astoria and South Coast railroad address the meeting: mate a clear, plain state ment of existing facts: just what is done, just what is needed: and that a call be made for subscriptions of stock. What Astoria should do, what is ex- pected of Astoria, is to build the first fifteen miles of that read: show that it can 1)3 done by doing it To extend it will then be comparatively an easy task, for assistance will then flow in from man- points now waiting to see what Astoria is doing. Let us meet, not with sarcasm nor personal feeling, but as friends to counsel and consult together for our mutual interests and the public good. PHEFIiltED CliEDITOItS. Medical men in general are prob ably not aware that in France the doctor's claim on the estate of a de ceased patient has precedence of all others. Even the landlord's claims for arrears of rent must yield to the doctor's fee. The courts have de cided that as it is an imperative right of humanity that the dying should have the necessary care and treat ment, such attendance should be paid for before all the other debts. Such a law in this conntry would be hailed with satisfaction by the doctors, and a similar provision for the undertakers would delight that profession. It is not always the man who looks the wisest who knows the most, but most people don't know this, so that it will pay you to look just as wise as you possibly can. Of course yon are going to the mass meeting to-night. nn SENT IT EAST. For a year I was troubled with pnius in my back and side, and headaches, the re sult of liver and lidney trouble. I was attracted to Joy's Vegetable Parsaparilla, by the startling testimonials in the pa pers. They seemed so practical I was in duced to try it, knowing that as it was purely vegetable, it would do no harm. It acted as a gentle laxative. Atter the second bottle my pains and aches disap peared. It did so much for mc that I sent several bottles to my familj in New Jersey, who nlso took it with the most satisfactory results. Master Caulker, foot Clay, San Francisco. WKVUIG OF THE GttEES. Oh. Jennie, dear, and did yon hear The news that's going round? One color must, by fashion's law,. In our fair land abound. It is not meant to call to arms, Save maiden's arms I weou lint every living olive branch, Is wearing of the green, I mot with cousin Katy, and I took her by the hand, And said: I hardly knew you, You look so fine and grand. Oh, it's all the fashion now, my dear, She answered.quito serene; And every girl nnd woman hero Is wearing of the green. Oh, there's lizard green serpent gre?n There's bottle green and sage; There's beetle green and apple green. The color's all the rage. It's well 'tis a free country here. 'Twould make a dreadful scene If anybody should forbid The wearing of the green. Their Business Booming. Probably no one thlnghas caused such a general revival of trade at .1. W. Conn's Drug Store as his giving away to their customers of so many free trial bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption.
