There was a very old mail from Merriwether county in attendance at Pike superior court last week, says the Macon Telegraph. He was feeblo in appearance indeed. Some of Lis old acquaintances asked him his age. "Well," he said, "if I live to see February 31. 1 will be 113 years old. Another remarkable fact connected with my construction is the fact that I haven't a tooth in ray head," open ing his mouth, and pointing to his smooth, toothless gums. He contin ued: "I was born that way. Wonderful ns it may nppear.my youngest son and eldest daughter were born that way also." The same old fellow looking as if he wa3 standing at the other end if the corridor of life, with all the gravity of nearly a century hanging over him, seriously says to an ac quaintance: "You mark a dollar and give it to me nnd I will put it with one of mine, and you can't tell for the life of you which ono you marked." "You are mistaken," says the ac quaintance, and tho silver dollar is forthcoming, marked nnd handed over. Then tho grave old man rattles it with ono of his own and pockets both. "Givo my dollar back." says the acquaintance. "No," interrupts tho old man. "I said that if you would mark a dollar and givo it to me you could not tell it from ono of my own that is because I am not going to givo yon a chance. Remember, I did not ask you to loan me a dollar, but give it to me. Yon did so, and now I don't propose to have any joking." Oregon, within three months from this date, April 20th, 1889. C. H. PAGE, Assignee. THE LOST ATLANTIS. For many centuries there has been it tradition of a long lost island called Atlantis. The Greek geographers located it in the Atlantic Ocean, west of the north west part of Africa and the Pillars of Hercules. The sea-kings of Atlantis are said to have invaded Europe and Africa, and to have been defeated by the Athenians. All the legends agree that it was a vast island , of inexhaustibl e resources, and inhabited by a race of superior people. For ages this island has ex isted only in legendary lore. But now, when the light of modern re search is turned full upon the inves tigation, behold the lost Atlantis at our very doors. So the bigoted medical fraternity gees groping about in the dark, seek ing for an Atlantis or Esculapius, when if they would investigate, they would behold the lost Atlantis at their very door. With their ancient text book, a case of physic, a paper in their waistcoat giving them license to prac tice, experiment and dose with their injurious drugs, cauterize and perform unnecessary acts, with no person or laws to hold them accountable, they continue their bigoted, unjustified practice, staring into vacancy, and imagining that they see in themselves an Esculapius. Wrapped in ancient bigotry, they are crying out against all improve ments that have been made in medi cal science. They denounce any new idea advanced by a layman or an op position school as a fraud. Why? Because humanity will not be ben efited? Not at all, but because their specialism did not make the discovery. Yet Jthey concede that there is no remedy known to the materia medica that will cure an advanced kidney malady and the diseases arising there fromalthough many of them know from crowning proof that Warner's Safe Cure will but unscrupulously treat symptoms and call them a dis ease, when in reality they know they arc but symptoms. " A few of the more honest physicians admit that Warner's Safe Cure is a valuable remedy, and a great blessing to mankind, but say, in so many words, when asked why they do not prescribe it, that they cannot, accord ing to their code. Nevertheless, the world is fast be coming satisfied that the cure for kid ney and liver diseases, in whatever form or condition, has been discov ered, and there is no doubt but what Warner's Safe Cure and its fame w ill live long after such bigotry as we have instanced is dead and buried. The late eminent physician" and writer, Dr. J. G. Holland, published in "Scribner's Monthly," and showed his opinion of such bigotry, and no doubt was satisfied that Atlantis might possibly be discovered in a proprie tary medicine, when he wrote editori ally, as follews: "Nevertheless, it is a fact that many of the best proprietary medicines of tho day were more successful than many of the physicians, and most of them, it should be remembered, were first discovered or used in actual med ical practice. When, however, any shrewd person, knowing their virtue, and foreseeing their popularity, se cures and advertises them, then, in tho opinion of tho bigoted, all virtue went out of them." Long-Standing Blood Diseases are cured by the persevering use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla. This medicine is an Alterative, and causes a radical change in the system. The process, in some cases, may not be quite so rapid as in others ; but, with persistence, the result is certain. Read these testimonials : " For two years I suffered from a se vere pain in my right sute, ana naa other troubles caused by a torpid liver and dyspepsia. After giving several medicines a fair trial without a cure, I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I was creatly benefited by the first bottle, and after taking five bottles I was com pletely cured." John vr. Benson, 70 Lawrence St., Lowell, Mass. Last May a large carbuncle broke out on my arm. The usual remedies had no effect and I was confined to my bed for eight weeks. A friend induced me to try Aver's Sarsaoarilla. Less than three bottles healed the sore. In all my expe rience wltu-medicine, i never saw moro Wonderful Results. Vnother marked 'effect of the use of this medicine was the strengthening of my -.isjlit." Mrs. Carrie Adams, Holly springs, xexas. " I had a dry scaly humor for years, and suffered terribly ; and. as my broth er and sister were similarly afflicted. I presume the malady is hereditary. Last winter, Dr. Tyron, (of Fernandina, Fla.,) recommended me to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and continue it for a year. For five months I took it daily. I have not had a blemish upon inv bodv for the last three months." T. E. Wiley, 140 unamuers St., rew xoric uity. " Last fall and winter I was troubled with a dull, heavy pain in my side. I did not notice it much at first, but it gradually grew worse uutil it became almost unbearable. During the latter part of this time, disorders of the stotri. ach and liver increased my troubles. I began taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and, after faithfully continuing the use ot this medicine for some months, the paiq disappeared and I was completely cured." Mrs. Augusta A. She broke all records from Qneenstown. The corrected time is live days, twenty-three hours and seven minutes. The best pre vious record was by the Etruria, sis days, one hour and fifty-nine minutes. It is the first voyage across the At lantic made in less than six days. There were many men in maritime circles who prophesied that the trip would never be made in less than that time. On the first day out from Liverpool the City of Paris covered 445 miles, the nest day 494, the third day 505, the fourth 511, the fifth 504, and in the last fraction of a day, 392. She also broke the record for a day's run, the longest run previously made in a single day being 505 miles, by the Umbria, of the Gunard line.
