The firemen now receive 345 monthly, and strike for SCO. This will cause a general tying-up of tugs until satisfactory arrangements are made. A LITTLE MIXED. Bnt Not More So Than Some of Thera. People who go to church (and there are lots of people who go to church in Astoria) often notice the turning of the pulpit into an advertising desk be fore the morning service begins; there are all sorts of announcements and notices. The writer once heard the minister in a church in this city read out a notice of a meeting of the Salvation Army "at their barracks iu this city this after noon." And the congregation seemed to take it seriously. Which tho same calls up the remembrance that once, iu an English country church tho curate had to give out two notices, the first of which was about baptisms and the latter had to do with a new hymn book. Owing to an accident he in verted the order and gave out as fol fel fol eows: "I am requested to announce that the new hymn-book will be used for the first time in this church Sun day next; and I am requested to call attention to the delay which often takes place in bringing children to be baptized; they should be brought on the earliest day possible. This is par ticularly pressed on mothers who have young babies." "And for the infor mation of those who have none," added the rector, in gentle, kindly tones, and who, being deaf, had not heard what had been previously said "and for the information of those who have none I may state, if wished, they can be obtained on application in the vestry immediately after service to-day. Limp ones, 1 shilling each; with stiff backs, 2 shillings." . Choice Burbank and Garnet Chili Po tatoes at Astoria Grocery and Canned Fruit company, old Strauss company, at SO cents a sack. Parker went to San Fran cisco on the Columbia yesterday. A. A. French, representing the American Net and Twine Co., is in the city. Senator Dolph is on his way from Washington and will be m San U ran cisco next Monday. Miss Lizzie Grounds went to East Portland last evening, where she will make her future residence. Mr. "White, a nephew of B. F. Allen, the painter, arrived yesterday from Bockfork, Ills., and will take a posi tion in the drug store of J. W. Conn. The "Arizona Kicker." The Detroit Free Press is able to discover the following characteris tic items in the last number of the Arizona Kicker. For some un know reason the Kicker Horn not ex change witk'any of its Pacific coast contemperaries: ExPLAVATonr. The absence of our society column for the last three issues seems to call for an explanation. The trouble was jealousy among the bon ton. If we happen to make a five line announcement that Mrs. Colonel Dash expected her brother-in-law direct from the California pen itentiary on a certain date, and only a four lino item to tho effect that Mrs. Judge De Sota imported her bustle direct from Zan zibar, there was an ill-feeling which stirred up the entire community. We Boon. While the towns about us have been bragging of their prog ress we have kept quiet and got in our work without kicking up any cloud of dust. Brag is all right in its way, but we don't propose to come out with a double leaded scare-head article every time a citizen hangs a new front gate. Booms are good enough in their way, but there must be a merit behind them. With no disposition to claim this as the only growing town in Arizona, and with no desire to kill the growth of rival towns, we humbly call attention to the fact that since January 1st four teen new saloons, three poker-rooms, and four retail tobacco stores have been opened in the place, and at the present moment eighteen men are en gaged in building a jail capable of accommodating thirty prisoners. We have done all this without any bras or bluster, and we propose to keep ngnt on in tue same quiet fashion, leaving the outside world to judge for itself as to where it shall seek new homes and invest its capital. Our Jealous Contemporary. The dyspeptic old excrescence who claims to edit the milk-and-mush publication down at the corner of Catfish alley is jealous of our adver tising patronage. In a labored article this week in his poorly printed old apology he says that we practice bull dozing to bring advertising. What a liar. The Kicker practice bulldozing! The idea is laughable, and if he was worth minding we should walk down to his shanty and choke the assertion down his brazen throat There used to be several firms here which didn't believe in advertising. We could'nt make 'em believe in it until we went at it and found out that they were com posed of gentlemen who had skipped from the east for barn-burning, horse stealing, bigamy, embezzlement, etc. Then we wrestled with 'em, and they came to see that the life of trade was in using printer's ink. We simply convinced not bulldozed. Tho efforts of our knock-kneed contemporary to smirch the fair fame of the Kicker will simply call forth smiles of pity. Epoch. The Iransilion from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life of the indi vidual. Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and the agency wnereoy uie goou ueaitu nas uecn at tained is gratefullv blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Bitters. It is invariably tho rule that among advertising doctors, one out of a hun dred performs the cures and relief ho advertises to, and among those few who cure, Drs. Darrin stand in the lead. LeviBartmes, Stayton, Or., heart disease, dyspepsia, pain through the heart and lungs, and general nervous debility, manv times he would fall as though dead, when everything seemed to turn black before his eyes, success fully treated. E. F. Chapman, Springfield, Or., writes Dr. Darrin thus: '"My wife is still improving in health. The asthma, cough and female troubles are nearly well, in fact better than sho has beeh for twenty years. The catarrhal dis charges in her throat are rapidly dim inishing. Angus McDonald's Death. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer ha3 the following concerning Annus Mc Donald, who died recently in Seattle: McDonald was the leader of the four men who removed tho jam in the Skagit river and so opened that water way to navigation. McDonald and associates hoped to realize enough trom the logs and from what the government might give them to pay them for the work. The four spent the four years from 1S76 to 1880 in clearing the great mass of logs which impeded the navigation of the river. The work was very hard and the men scarcely made board. The exposure incident to this work broke down Mc Donald's health and he never fully re covered, xne lonr men who per formed this great public work put in claims of S25.000 each, but were never able to collect a cent. They per formed the work under a mistaken impression that the United States wonld compensate them therefor. Since then McDonald has been un able to perform manul labor and followed light vocations. For the past two years he has been attending bar. McDonald was 42 years of age and a native of Glengarry, Canada. He was known both as Angus Mc Donald and Donald McDonald. THE LADIES DELIGHTED.
