cy lt gutty tonau. ASTORIA. OREGON: nDAV ..MAY 3.1SS5. FOR INSTANCE. Fi'sxr how things come around. The San Francisco Chronicle runs a cor.iile of colnmns in its Sunday issue of sayings, bright and other ivisrt and-philosophy, under the head of 'l adertones." The eastern papers coiy some of it, and the furnishers of rc-idy made newspapers and '"plates" fc those who use that stuff, send it around the country, and so a good n sny of the CAronicfeVTJndertones" t 't into other San Francisco papers i that stereotyped way. "Which re minds the writer that when Grant ted in July, '85, the scribe'who indites hese lines wrote an editorial on the general's death which was extensively opied. The last paper wo remember 3eing it in as it floated, was the Memphis Avalanche. It was not credited, and was a waif and stray on the sea of newspapordom. But it was stereotyped in Kansas City, and with other plate matter, found its way back to this coast About November '85, wo saw it one day in a Seattle paper the Press we believe. The funny part of it was that the sterotyper had croditod it to the Memphis Avalanche. A GOOD JOKE. The best political joke of the season comes from Portland, whero it is re ported that Ed Curtis and C. B. Wat son aro "putting up a job on the boys." Curtis and Watson, so goe3 the story, say that they were tho causo and moans of making Clatsop county go Republican last Juno and again last November, and that tho horn of tho righteous should bo exalted. Tho al leged programme is to havo Curtis for collector of customs and Watson as deputy. Whero does Bozorth, of Se attle, come in? Or can three of a kind beat two pair? A Sacramento editor whilo run ning in a fat men's race at a Sacra mento picnic last Sunday, fell and broke one of his legs Hero is mater ial for reflection and study. Whether it is because ho lived in Sacramento or because ho went to a picnic, or because tho picnic was on Sunday, or because ho ran a fat man's raco doth not ap pear. It looks like a case of righteous judgment An editor has no business in being fat, norin going to picnics on Sunday, nor breaking his foreleg. The Now York postoffice is tho largest business establishment, affect ing the greatest numbar of people under tho government' of the United States. It delivers and collects every year a number of letters, papers, etc., sue times as numerous as tho entiro population of tho Union. It handles in each year over $83,00,0000 in money order business, while its own receipts are over 3,000,000, and the net reve nue of the government is S3,250,000. The attention of Astoria capitalists who find difficulty in placing satisfac tory loans at eight per cent, is direct- oi to the fact that tho demand for dwelling houses in this city exceeds tho supply, and it is adaily occurrence for a family to unsuccessfully seek a roof to cover them. A max exposes his own love of money,' when he fails to comprehend tho action of another which has no motive of reward superior to the en joyment of tho work. TIio Verdict Unanimous. W. D. Suit, Drugcist. Lippus Jnd., testifies: ''1 can recouuue.ua Electric l.it'.ers as the very best remedy. Every Imttld sold has ?;iven relief in every case. One man toel: six bottles, and w.iscured of Kheumatisni of 10 years' fetaiidiiic." Abraham Hare, drucgist, Bellville, Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medi cine I have ever handled in my 20 years' experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou sands of others have added their testi lnnnv.so that the vnrrlirt i unanimous that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of the Liver, Kidneys or Blood. Onlv a half dollar a bottle at J. Joy a prosperous druggist on tho comer of Stockton and Market streots, InSan Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling In wealth tho medi cine kings ol tho country. But various rumors having boen floating around to tho effect that he has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student of Bot any, located in this city. His practieo was not extensive, and yet the few cases that came to him attracted no little atten tion. His great success seemed to be in tho treatment of liver and kidney disorders and vitiated blood. Ho seemed almost Infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much amystcry as himself. (After his de parture Sir. Joy determined to fathom tho secret, and copying all tho prescriptions ho had filled for tho erratic doctor, he began a systematic, analysis. Ho discov ered running all through the prescript ions for livor and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couplo of vogetable extracts indigenous to California so simple and to welt known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely, dissipate tho suspicion that they wcro tho activo principles involved So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that ho had discovered tho scerot that ho embod ied the new elements in a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguiso the taste, and put it before his customers under tho modest name of Joy'a Vcgetablo Sarsaparilla. Im mediately tho samo stories camo back of its astonishing effects, and tho mystery was solved, and tho talk it has crcatcd'has already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in dally from all over tho coast. And thus another California Indus try leaps Into existence. S. F Kxnmtntr. Lost. The work of removing the cargo of the ill-fated steamer Alliance is going steadily-forward. Captain Bailey, who is superintend ing the work, reports having removed about sixty tons of the cargo, there yet remaining nbont thirty tons to bo taken out It is estimated that the damage to the ninety tons mixed car go will foot up into the neighborhood of S20.000, or nearly the value of the steamer. John Steffen, tho north Portland shipbuilder, has the contract for haul ing the Alliance out, and repairing the breach in her hull This will cost about 4,000, which will be borne by the insurance companies who insured the steamer for S20.000. The work of hauling the steamer out will commence to-day. Mr. F. B. Strong, president of the company owning the Alliance, says that it is utterly impossible to give an exact estimate of the loss to the steamer's cargo. Some of it is in sured and some of it is not The deck load which consisted of vegetables, oil and iron is but slightly damaged, and that only being what was mashed by being on the side struck by the Danube's bow. A certain class of goods in the hold is a total loss, hav ing been under water ever since the collision occurred, Considerable of the lighter portion of the cargo floated out of the hold in the Alliance's side, and is of course a total loss.
