When I entered the village situ ated among the hills ol New York, nt 10 o'clook in -the morning, all was peaceful and serene, and the pocket of every man who walked tho street had chink in it When I left at 4 p. h. an excited mob had possession of the main street and everyother man was dead broke. Abont noon a man arrived from the north in a buggy. He said he was a drover and looking for hoes. He bought half a dozen before he ate dinner, and it was astonishing how closely he guessed at their live weight. He wos within two pounds of four of them, and only half a pound more on the others. This had been an attraction for a crowd of idlers, and the general verdict was that the drover was as sharp as a barber's razor. Soon after dinner a farmer-looking boy drove a hog into town ana asked turn out in front of the tavern. As he wanted to sell, and the drover wanted to buy they soon came together. "Might take him on n pinch, but he's only a nubbins," said the drover, as he sized the porker up. "Nubbins! Why that pig goes over aw pounds! exclaimed the owner. "Can't stuff me. boy. I've been in the business twenty years." "No one wants to stuff. Thnl'era ho'BKoesto210." fle does eh?, Wish your father had come in. Td like to make a bet with him. Boy, yon ought to have better j udgment. That hog won't pull down 180." "Guess you are off too," remarked a stranger who had quietly driven up in a buggy. "I've'.raised hogs all my life, and that boy han't ' five pounds out of his. guess." "An't he! Raised hogs have you? Ever raise any;money?" "A little." "Perhaps you'd like to bet on that nog?" "Perhaps." "Have you'got S20os says he goes over zuur "I have fifty a' hundred." v-j.nen lets cnaiK. Anybody can blow." It was a chance to make a dollar, and the citizens improved it. The man in the buggy was an nccomodat mg ohap, and somehow or other the farmer boy managed to fish up about a nunurea dollars from the bind pockets of his overalls. The citizens stuok by the drover, having abundant proofs of his judgment, and when every man in the town who had n dollar to lose or could borrow one, had made his bet, the hog was driven to the scales and weighed. "Gentlemen." said the drover iust before the weighing, "I was" never de ceived in my life. This hog won't go to lao pounds." "I'll take even bets that he gopo over UUO, replied tue man in the buggy. This bluff.raked out the last nicklo in tho crowd, and tht hog was driven upon tho soales. The record was 211 pounds. He was weighed and re weighed, but the figures stood. "Well, it's my nrst error m a hot?." said the drover, and nil bets wero at once handed over. Tho farmer boy slipped out, tho two men drove off in tho buggy, and half an hour hnd elapsed before a church deacon, who uuu jiiiu 111s tent wiin me urover and lost suddenly declared that it was a put-up job to skin the town. "Dura my buttons if it han't 1" yelled 200 men in chorus, but it was too late. The town had been skinned, and the trio had -escaped. All the mob could do was to turn loose and wreck an old vinegnr factory and pass a resolution to tho effect that liberty was a sham and a delusion. Ex. The Herald, published in the new county of Harney, says that not over four miles of jthe original bed of Warner lake is now covered with water, whereas (5n 1865 there were seven feet of water where the land is now dry, and this year a stack con taining 300 ton of hay was burned on-land which m 1878 was surveyed as Warner lake. Goose lake, which once reached Lakeview, Oregon, is now five miles away, and Malheur lake, in Harney county, is eight feet lower than at any period within the memory or tne omest inhabitant. The Winnemucca Silver State says that Humboldt lake in Nevada, which some years ago comprised a sheet of water sixteen or eighteen mile3 long and from eight to twelve miles wide, is now only a few miles long and perhaps a mile or two wide. The Humboldt has not discharged any water into the lase lor several years, and a large area which was covered several feet with water at one time is now as dry as any part of the Humboldt valley. It is a fact, however, that the lake was as low nine or ten years ago as it is to day, and that five years ago it was as high as it was ever ;known to bo. Immi grants in early days who saw the Humboldt discharge an immense volume of water into the lake, or sink, as it was called, believed it had a subterraneous outlet, but that idea wa3 erroneons, as the volnmo of water was reduced by evaporation, not drainage.
