The Daily Astobiax, of April 23d, baa a verr able article in advocacy of Astoria being the future seaport of the northwest. Undoubtedly this city at the month of the Columbia river wmen drama a largo region 01 country has superior advantages for direct ocean traffic. Heretofore Fort land has controlled the trade of the northwest by means which were op pressive to all portions of the coun try except herself. The only railroad centered in that city, and by fayoring the corporation in every possible man ner she received favors in return. Every dollar of excess freight paid by producers in the inland empire has increased the wealth of Portland, and she owes her prestige to-day as a shipping point to these discrimina tions. As the Astobian well argues, an artificial seaport cannot be built by favoritism, and eventually trade will seek the nearest and most acces sible port to the ocean. The exam ples given by our esteemed contem porary of New York on the Hudson, New Orleans on the Mississippi and Philadelphia at mouth of the Dela ware, clearly proves this point. Port land has thwarted every measure for the development of the state in order to maintain her position as a seaport. The opening of the Columbia river she has bitterly opposed, and her board of trade has placed itself on re cord against the forfeiture of the Val lula land grant of the Northern Paci fic, believing in her selfish polioy that the only way to accomplish her pur pose was by centering the great trans continental railroads within her boun daries. The completion of the North ern Pacific to tide-water on tho Sound dispelled this allusion, and Portland awakened to the realization of the faot that it she desired to be the great city of Oregon her growth must be impelled by the growth of the interior, and not by throttling and squeezing the life out of every community not trib utary to her. The realization has come late, and already several farm ing districts in the inland empire are shipping their produce to the Sound, and others naturally tributary to the Columbia river, are looking to the N. P. RR. and Puget Bound as the only sure relief from the freight op pression of the O. B. & N. Company. Eastern Oregon is interested in open ing the Columbia river, and it Port land in the past had acted fairly towards the interior the trade of this rioh region would have followed this natural outlet to the sea, and no portion would have been diverted to Puget sonnd. No one who considers the Colum bia river as the natural channel of commerce for the northwest can overlook the importance of Astoria as the natural seaport of Oregon. She is situated at the mouth of the great river, and all sailing crafts have to pass her wharves before they begin the tortuous passage to Port land. Connect ner by rail with the Willamette valley, or ODen the Co lumbia to navigation, and the products of the state would seek her docks and save the expense of light erage from Portland. If Astoria would profit by her advantages and join with The Dalles, the Columbia could be practically opened to navi gation by placing boats nbovo and below the Cascades, and using tho portage.- This city or Astoria can expect no aid from Portland in the matter of removing obstructions to navigation in the Columbia, and the dilatory manner in which the gov ernment has prosecuted the work nas almost exhausted the patience of our people; therefore, if these two points, the most interested in a free river, desire to see the freight problem solved, they must solve it by the method suggested. Astoria must in time reap the advantages of her situation, and the constrnction of railroads and utilizing the river as a means of transportation will hasten the final destiny of trade in Oregon. Causes of the Tide's Ebb and Plow No movement of the sea is more important than the regular rise and fall, once in about twenty-five, hours, which we know as the tide. The movement is due to the difference be tween the attractions exerted by the moon and sun upon the solid earth, and those exerted upon the oceanic envelope. Attraction as shown by Newton, varies not only directly as the mass, but also inversely as the square of the distance; thus at an equal distance one body will exert double the attraction of another of half the masH; but if the distance of one body be twice that of the other and the masses equal, the attraction of the more distant will be but a quarter of that of the nearer. So the im mense mass of the sun exerts, in spite of its greater distance, a far greater attraction upon the earth as a whole than does the moon. The difference, however, between the sun's attraction upon the solid earth and its attraction upon the ocean is, on account of its distance, but a small fraction of its total attrac tion; while that between the moon's attraction upon the solid earth and its attraction upon the ocean, owing to its comparatively small distance of 240,000 miles, is a very considerable fraction of its total attraction. So that while the earth's attraction canses tho moon to travel round it once a month, the reciprocal attraction of the moon is mainly effectual in causing the tides, the sun's action being only about ono third as great. The waters of the open ocean have a tendency to rise up in a heap on the side nearest the moon, because they are pulled more strongly than is the solid globe, and beinu liquid, yield to the attraction. Simultaneously a similar heaping up occurs at the antipodes ot this point on the side, that is, farthest from the moon because the solid globe is, as it were, pulled away from the wa ter there. Two great tidal waves are thus originated; and, as the earth's move ment in its orbit, coupled with its daily rotation, makes the moon oc cupy the same relative position every twenty-five hours or, more exacly every twenty-four hours and fifty minutes high tide at any place oc curs twice in every such period of time.
