Constipation
Demands prompt treatment. The re
sults of neglect may be serious. Avoid
all harsh, -and drastic purgatives, the
tendency of which is to -weaken the
bowels. The best remedy Is Ayer'a

action is prompt and their effect always
beneficial. They ore an admirable

" I can recommend Aver's Pills nhovn

" For several years Ayer's Pills have

Moses Grenier, Lowell, Mass.
"I have used Aver's Pills, for liver
troubles and indigestion, during many
years, and have always found them
prompt and efficient in their action."
L. N. Smith, Utica, K. Y.
" I suffered from constipation which
assumed such an obstinate form that I
feared it would cause a stoppage of the
bowels. Two boxes of Ayer's Pills ef

Saco, Me.
' I liave used Ayer's Pills for the past
thirty years and consider them an in
valuable family medicine. I know of
no better remedy for liver troubles,
and have always found them a prompt
cure for dyspepsia." James Qiiinn.SO

"Havinc been troubled with costive-'

A Serlons Conflict of Elral Interests.
HNew Yoek, April 19. The already
strained relations Deiween ma uuiuu
and the Northern Pacific railroad
companies are likely to become even
more complicated over affairs in the
northwest. The officials of these
companies have been negotiating forj
a joint .lease ot tne lines or. me j. i.
&N. CJa.bnt it looks as thongh the
lease vronld not be consummated,
and indications are that these two
transcontinental roads will become
involved in bitter warfare. In fact,
they nre already fighting, and tho
Northern Pacific agents have refused
to recognize tickets sold over their
road to Tacoma by agents on the
Union Pacific, the claim being made
that tho latter had cut passenger
rates -without anyjanthority whatever,
and that the Northern. Pacific could
not be forced to take these tickets-
all of which has caused a very war
like feeling between tho officials of
the passenger departments of the two
roads.
In addition to this, recent corres
pondence between Charles Francis
Adams, president of the Union Pa
cific, and representatives of the ex
ecutive committee of the Oregon &
Transcontinental,the latter also being
directors in the Northern Pacifio
board, has not seemed to mend matters.
This correspondence consists of a
telegram which was sent to Adams
by these gentlemen, and a letter from
Adams, in which the latter particu
larly stated that he does not care
whether the Northern Pacifio people
sicm the lease or not and that ha is
perfectly able to "hoe his own row."
Airew-uays Bgo it was reported to
some of tho Northern Pacifio direc
tors that Adams had said that if the
lease was not signed soon ho would
make things lively. Thereupon the
telegram already mentioned was sent,
it having first been shown to and ap
proved by two directors here of the
Union Pacifio.
In his reply, Adams threw down
the gauntlet, and now both sides are
resting on their Oars, waiting for
the fray that is almost certain to
follow.
This letter was not made public,
but; it was read at the meeting of the
Northern Pacifio directors yesterday,
after which it was filed. No action
was taken, as it was thought best to
wait until Henry Villard, who is ill
at home, eould join the deliberations
on behaif of the Northern Pacific.
It was said that if Adams preferred
to fight they would be able to hold
their own. and it was positively as
serted by friends that the company
had succeeded in setting control of
the stock of the Oregon Railway &
Navigation company, and at the an
nnnl election ot the latter company,
which occurs in June, they would en
tirely reorganize the .board 'of di
rectors, and bounce all the represen
tatives of the Oregon company. If
this be so, it will make an exceed
ingly complicated situation, for the
Oregon Railway & Navigation com
pany is already under lease to the
Oregon Short Line, which in turn is
owned by the Union Pacific company,
so that the operating and executive
departments of the Oregon Railway
& Navigation compauy would be con
tinued by men, whose interests are
diverse.

Readers of the newspapers of, the
day cannot fail to ba impressecl with
the fact that the modern advertiser is
progressive.
He is compelled to be, else coispe
titors more active in the invention of
new advertising Havices, -will outstrip
him in public favor.
The value of printers' ink judicious
ly arid sc' tiflcally employed cannot
be overestimated; it is tho medium
whereby a meritorious discovery is
raised from, localf ame to aiwsition in
the public esteem. Hence the col
umns of the newi papers are daily used
by hosts of advertisers and in the
competition which is indulged in to
attain the desired end, the reader is
oftentimes amued.
The greatest of American advertis
ers, and it may as well be said in the
world, is H. H. "Warner of Rochester,
N. Y., whose name has been mode
everywhere familiar in connection
with Warner's Safe Cure, widely ad
vertised because of its merit in the
prevention andVmre of kidneyidiseas33.
By printer's 'ink this great discov
ery has achieved world-wide popular
ity and thousands feel grateful for the
knowledge thup acquired of this
greatest of-rcoderi'i remedies.
Furthermore, the public has been
taught that disorders of tho lungs,
brain, heart and liver which have
hitherto been regarded and treated
by the profession as distinctive dis
eases are not so in fact, but are the
attending symptoms of disease of the
kidneys; therefore, tho consumptive,
tho apoplectic, the paralytic, and the
sufferer fr m nervous disorders can
be restored to health by Warner's
Safe Cure, which will remove the true
cause of those disorders by restoring
the kidneys to healthy action.
Tke advertising methods employed
by this greatest of advertisers are in
variably instructive and, although the
reader may sometimes be "caught" in
-reading an advertisement, which was
not at first supposed to be such, there
is nevertheless no time lost since use
ful information is invariably gained
concerning life's great problem.
