An Event in the. History of the Lower
St. Lawrence.
Mostbeaii, April 18. Dispatches
from the lower St, Lawrence and the
gulf tell of the most remarkable
event that has ever ocenred in these
localities.
From the tipper end ot Anticosti
island to theMagalen island a driv
ing, blinding snowstorm began on
Tuesday and on the night ot the
same day great floes of ice began to
come down from the St. Lawrence
and the Sagnenay.
The few people along the north and
sonth shores and on Anticosti who
were astir on Wednesday morning
witnessed a sight that startled them.
As far as the eye conld see up, down
and across the gulf the floes, still
moving, were packed with harp or
Greenland seals. The ice was fairly
black with them. It was impossible
to hunt them in the moving ice, bat
daring the afternoon the snowstorm
ceased and the ice packed,
Then everybody, old women, boys,
girls, old men and farmers for miles
aronnd, armed themselves' with dabs,
hatchets, or any other weapon .they
conld get hold of, and went on to the
ice after the seals.
It was a fearful slaughter, and the
poor animals seemed so dazed by the
sudden attaok that they were 'abso
lutely incapable of making their,
escape. A .knock on the head was
snfBoient to settle them, and before
night every person that could walk
had his or her pile of dead seals
awaiting transfer to the shore.
In Gagpe there were over 4,000
killed, and one priest had 800 to his
credit. Along the north shore, from
cape Tiennot to the Mingan Isles,
there were 3,000 taken, and in the
Esquimaux Isles the slaughter was
fearful.
On Anticosti the greatest number
were taken at Pornt-aa-Lepinette,
where the shore) are still heaped
with carcasses (.waiting skinning and
boiling down.
Tho son ot the lighthouse keeper
at Point Cormorant killed 450 seals
and lost 100 of them because he
could not set them ashore before
night set in, when it became danger
ous to go on the ice.
In the Magdalen islands and on
the Bird rocks, the killing amounted
to 7,000 up to Friday mornig, and it
was 8 till going on.
At Hawe-au-Basque the inhabitants
continued their work at night, the
tloes covered with seals, drifting into
the horseshoe like narborand remain
ing there.
At GriDshu, the wonderful incur
sion of seals was a godsend to the
people, who have earned enough
within a few days to keep them a
year.
On Ithe Bird rock carcasses are
piled up like so many bags of pota
toes, and the people are opulent in
their richness. There must have
been at leasU?00,OpO,-,Eeen altogether,
and the total; number killed during
the three days will reach over 150.000.
They are not the fur seals of Alas
ka, but they 'are valuable for . their
oil and their hides are used for boots,
trunk-covers, etc. They are worth
hero S3 each, and tho fat is worth $5
per hundred-weight. Fishermen
have been.sent froaTQuebec to the
gulf, and an enormous number of
seals are expected to be killed. Never
in the history ot tho gulf have so
many been seen at one time.

Chicago, April 18. The Daily
News' Washington special says: A
very pretty imie story, which prom
ises to develop into an interesting
trial, comes to "Washington from
Alaska.
It is to the effect that abont three
years ago a man named MoPherson
sailed from San Francisco, and event
ually landed on one of the Aleutian
islands off the coast of Alaska. . Mr.
McPherson's entire outfit consisted
ot a suit of clothes, an American flag
and cnees enougn lor a whole regi
ment, together with a paper purport
ing to have been signed by attorney
general Garland appointing him
United States commissioner.
As soon as he landed on the island
he raised tho American flag with a
great deal ot ceremony, and took
command of. the GOO natives, and
compelled them to address him as"
"king" MoPherson. Each season he
exacted a heavy tribute from the na
tives, and altogether he seems to have
been having a lovely time. Things
went along very smoothly until a few
months ago, when he had some diffi
culty with three of his subjects, and
fearing that there might be a mutiny,
hanged three of the rebellious ones.
The report of McPherson's rule
reached the treasury department, and
a snecial agent was sent to his island
to investigate the matter. This agent
recently reported the facts to secre
tary Windom substantially as they
are given above.
Now it is earl that a revenue cutter
will be sent tc the island for the pur
po?o of crres'.ing MoPherson. It is
the intention of the authorities to
bring him tn San Francisco and try
lyn for mrrder.
