The annual tangle exists between

what is and what is not swamp land,
and a good many in Clatsop county

Nothing like enterprise. A short
time ago The Astobiak nnd other
papers that take dispatches had an
account of the abandonment of the
fishing schooner Oeo. H. Chance
off Yaquina. Tho president of the
company wrote to the Gloucester,
Mass., owners after the accident,
giving an account of it, the Glou
cester papers published the letter,
which was telegraphed to San Fran
cisco and published two weeks after
the accident, and ten days after the
original account had appeared.
Some Salmon FIsIiIds Notrs.
Not for many a year has there been
so much gear in the water this early
in the season, as has been since the
open time began on the 1st inst.
Men who never fished before have
fixed up nny kind of a boat and any
kind of a net, and are thick from
Cathlamet up to above Vanceuver:
the banks are lined with traps, and
every possible point is occupied by a
a trap. The Astobian is informed
that with the exception of three can
neries, every cannery on the river has
from 60 boats upward.
On every shoal of sand is a seine.
At the Cascades fish wheels scoop
up everything indiscriminately.
Take all together it looks as if there
was to be "a killing" this year.
Tho boats are doing very poorly
five, Bix, eight to the beat: the traps
are not catching many so far; the
wheels are not yet in operation, but
soon will be.
Tho seine men expect to make a
big haul this year.
As an instance is given the seine of
Otto Peters, at Reed's Island, two
miles above Kalama. He is reported
to be catching, some hauls, two tons of
salmon. He sells this at five cents a
pound.
Two hundred dollars a haul for a
seine isn't bad, though, of course, it
won't average that amount
One man, near Brookfield, is re
ported to have cleared $17,000 with
his seine last year.
Decided In Favor of Sirs. Emma Ross.
There was a suit at the court house
yesterday in which Sheriff Smith as
judge presided.
Some time ago Alex. McDonald ob
tained judgment in the circuit court
for two hundred and odd dollars, on
a note against H. Hirschfeldt and
levied upon a wagon said to be Hirsch
feldt's, but claimed by Mrs. Emma
Ross.
A jury consisting of Theo.Bracker,
C. S. Wright, Phil. Bower, P. J.
Meany, Marcus Wise and A. Mont
gomery, heard the testimony and
gave a verdict in favor of Mrs. Ross.

OUR ILWACO LETTER.
Newsy Items From the City "by yie Bay.
The worst storm of the season has
been raging here off and ou during
the past three days. The pile drivers
are holding pretty well and not so
much damage has been done to that
kind of shipping as usual during
sprint; storms. Your correspondent
found on the beach hundreds of pret
ty, lelly-uke fish that ho has never
before seen here. They are exaotly
like the nautilus, and he thinks tney
must be young nautilus, called by
tne sailors "Jfortuguese men-01-war.
Wild geese are flying in greater
numbers than last spring. Chester
stout shot one recently tnat weigned
35 pounds before being dressed, and

The L R. & N. Co. are pushing
worn and laying track just as last as
material can be furnished. At pres
ent there is about fifteen miles of
track laid.
For some time there was a petition
in circulation here for the purpose of
having Ilwaco incorporated as a
town, and it received a large number
of signatures. Not long after the
aforesaid had been forwarded to the
proper authorities, another petition
in the form of a remonstrance was in
circulation, duly signed by many and
also forwarded. No returns thus far.
It's a real pleasure to read in The
Astobiak that lumber can be pur
chased at the West Shore Mills at
five and nine dollars a thousand less
than it can here. When a man must
pay S100 or more, never any less, for
a building lot it pays to look outside
of the village limits for some lumber.
It's just five feet from the front
door of our public school house to a
hogpen and chicken yard. When
onr people can afford to buy another
school house and lot, or ever pay for
what they have perhaps they can
afford to support some town officers,
build a jail, water tanks for the fire
department, and other evidences of
civilized prosperity and advancement.
Arbor Day was not observed here.
Many of our citizens wore anxious to
plant some new trap stakes, but the
bad weather prevented.
The Ilwaco Mill Co. are removing
their plant to the north end of
Whealdon's lake and quite near the
I. R. & N. track where they will have
better facilities for receiving logs,
and shipping lumber. They will
soon be in running order.
If Sand Island continues to come
over this way it will soon be en
croaching on the water front claimed
by some of us old settlers.
Fishing is not very brisk at present,
business booming here though.
There is some talk of starting a K. of
Pr lodge here.
Lin day Stone is the fattest boy in
Ilwaco, when seen yesterday he
measured over forty inches round
the waist.

brate their first annual anniversary
with a grand literary entertainment
concluding witn a grand ball in tne
evening. All the lodges in the

Dr. D. J. McFall, for many years a
practicing physician, here leaves to

Parks, of Portland will take Dr.

A report is in circulation here,
that David Davis, of Astoria and
a gentleman from St Helens
will start a weekly newspaper here
shortly.
THE LADIES DELIGHTED.
Tho pleasant effect and the perfect

How lien Die.
If we know all the methods of ap
proach adopted by an enemy we are
the better enabled to ward off the
danger and pospone the moment when
surrender becomes inevitable. In
many instances the inherent strength
of the body suffices to enable it to op
pose the tendency toward death.
Many however have lost these forces
to such an extent that there is little
or no help. In other cases a little
aid to the weakened Lungs will make
all the difference between sudden
death and many years of useful life.
Upon the first symptoms of a Cough,
Cold or any trouble of the Throat or
Lungs, give that old and wellknown
remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a
earful trial. It will prove what
thousands say of it to be, the "beno
actor of any home."
The Attor lloaae Thief Heard From.
J. G. McLeod, who stole about 3300
from the Astor house last Saturday
morning, has been heard from. He
gave a man ten dollars to take him iu
a sailboat as far as Ilwaco that morn
ing. When there he gave a man
eight dollars to take him in a wagon
as far as Oysterville. There he
crossed the palm of a stalwart boat
man with four silver dollars to take
him as far as Peterson's Point, where
he was at last accounts.
If there is another world that fel
low will be damned; and if there's
not, he is damned anyhow.

bors talking about It. Xou may your
self be one of the many who know from

thing It Is. If you have ever tried it, you

the wonderful thing about it is, that
when once given trial, Dr. King's New
Discovery ever after holds a place in
the house. If you have never used it
and should bo afflicted with a cough,
cold or any Throat, Lung or Chest
troubto, secure a bottle at once and give
it a fair trial. It Is guaranteed overy
