West Sixth Street Improvement
Notice.
Notice is hereby given that tho Com
mon Council propose to order tho im
provement of that portion of West
Sixth street in the city of Astoria as
laid out and recorded by J. 'M. Shively
in Clatsop county, Oregon, from the
soutii side of Water street to the south
side of Cedar street, by removing all de
fective piles, caps and stringers and re
placing Ihem with new and.-ound piles,
caps and siringcis, and by laising it to
tho established crade. and bv nlaukinc
the same with new and sound fir plank
four inches in thickness to the full
width of the street, and by building
sidewalks on both sides of said portion
of said itreet. Said improvement to be
made at the expense of the adjacent
property. And unless a remonstrance
signed by the owners of two-thirds of
the propcrpty fronting on said portion
of said street be filed with tho Auditor
aiid Polico Judge within ten days
after the final publication of this notice,
to wit; On or beforo Saturday April
20th 18S9 the Common Council will
order said improvement to be made.

NOTICE is hereby given that the assessment made by ordinance No. 1073 of the
city of Astoria Clatsop county, Oregon, and wnich ordinance was approved on
the 28th day of March, 1889, for the improvement of Chcnamus street, in said city,
as laid out and recorded by John McCIure, from the west side of Main street to
the western end of Chenamus street. In the manner provided by ordinance No.
1070, and which ordinance w..s approved on the 13tu day or Marcn, leay, on eacn
of the following described lotnml portions of lots and blocks fronting on any
portion of said portion of said street, is now payable at the office of the city
treasurer in TJ. S gold coin, and unit ss paid within live days after tne final pub
lication of this notice, to-wit: on or before Saturday. April 20th, 1889, the Com
mon C.'uncii will order warrants ued for the collection thereof.

Tuesday night between nine and
fen o'clock while tho steamer Port
land, belonging to P. J. McGowan
& Sons of Chinook was lying along
side Elmore's cannery just beyond
the city limits, sho struck a sunken
pile, knocking a large bolo in her
port bow. The captain, Joe Brown,
was ashore at the time, looking after
some coal that he wished to take
aboard, and on returning to the bout
found the fires almost ont. He im
mediately took in the sitnation and
steamed for town, but a3 she was
sinking rapidly he headed her along
side tho Washington cannery dock
where she sunk to her deck, it being
almost high water.at the time Car
penters were at once put to work and
the repairs completed, water pumped
out of her and at high water last
evening she was got off very little
the worse for her immersion.
