During the latter part ot March a young man giving the name of Mor rissy arrived from "Wilkesbarre, Pen nsylvania, nnd put up at the Burton house on Third and F streets. Un der the same roof there was sojourn ing a Miss Alice Anderson, a hand some school teacher of Stella, Cow litz county, W. T. An acquaintance sprand up between the couple and on the young man representing himself as being the son of a wealthy eastern gentleman, the young lady was in duced to tako a ride to Vancouver where the couple were married. The love, courtship and marriage did not require a week. Four days after tho marriage cere mony had been solemnized the newly made bride discovered that her hus band was an adventurer, without means, and traveling under au as sumed name; so she left him, refus ing to accept bis ready explanations and excuses. The man's true name is Lonard J. Mnrcy. Not being able to pay his hotel bill amounting to 815, the proprietor, E. j. Griffin, withheld his trunk. Marcy, watch ing his opportunity, stole the trunk from the hotol, for which he was ar rested last Saturday" on a charge of larceny by bailee. When the case was called in Jus tice Tattle's court yesterday, Marcey did not appear, and his gold watch and chain which was left to insure his appearance for trial was declared forfeited. Mr. Griffin, late proprietor ot tho Burton house, yesterday noon re ceived the following from the young man's father. "My yonngost son, Leonard J. Marcy, wrote me a letter from your hotel dated March 17. To-day (April 1) I received a telegram from him that he was still in Portland and sick. I sent him S30 to-day per telegraph. Please let me know whether he is at yonr hotel and whether ho is sick or only playing it to get money." Mis3 Anderson is in great grief and humiliation over the sudden and un expected termination ot her short married life, which, for a few brief hours promised to be so happj. This is the usual unhappy sequel to has tily marrying an unknown person without first consulting one's friends. Oregonian. The young lady in question is very well and favorably known in Astoria, being a relative of the Sherman fam ily, and her many friends will bo sor ry to hear of her unfortunate experi ence. Emerson, of Ho quiam. and Guss Stratton, Abcrdcon, Washington territory, for alleged un lawful cutting of timber. Special timber agent Byrne reports that dur ing last year these parties cut and removed in section 1G, township 17 north, range 8 west, Eome 146 spruce trees, valued at S5 per tree, which they made into piling and boom timber. Secretary Noble has granted tho application of a number of settlers on unsurveyed public lands in Cali fornia, Oregon and Washington ter ritory for a survey of tho lands on which they reside. The secretary has directed that the United States surveyor general shall invite propos als to survey this land at the rates allowed by act of October 2, 1883. C. M. Ogden has been appointed special timber agent of the land office by secretary Noble. Ogden's duties will bo in Washington ter ritory. Tho U.
