HOW BUTLER KILLED A BEAR.
Butler of the Saddle Rock
restaurant on Union wharf, has
been a mighty hunter and trapper
in Alaska and in western Wash
iugton, where, in company with
Uncle Peter Fisher, he has slain
more elk, deer and bear than any
hunter in these Darts. Like all
old trappers he has a fund of
stories which ho relates in a gemai
manner. He was interviewed by
an Argus reporter, a new comer
who likes to listen to strange
stories told by old sailors and
hunters, and this was what was
said:
"I was out huntinrr one time in
the Quilleute mountains and made
a camp early one afternoon along
side a big log six foot through and
had built a camp fire and was
whittling a yew "stick about 10
inches long and had sharpened
both ends to "use a3 a stretcher.
All at once I heard a growl and
looking up there was a big black
bear the other side of the log,
reared up on his hind legs with
his mouth wide open trying to
reach me. I was a good
deal startled and without
thinking I jammed the stick
into his mouth just perpendicular
like, and he couldn't shut his jaws.
Quicker than lightning I reached
out my right hand and grabbed
his tongue which was lolling out
bear fashion, and by a sudden, al
most superhuman effort, I tore his
tongue out by the roots,"
"Didn't your hand slip?"
"Oh no. I rubbed it in the
ashes to get a good hold, and you
bet when the tongue came out the
bear gave a yell and tried to run
away. But somehow I came to
my senses and got my rifle and
shot Mr. Bear dead. He was a
big one, as big as a bullock, and
his hair was as black as jet and
as soft as silk. Now, how much
do you suppose I got for the
skin?"
"Well, a bear skin like that
would be worth $12."
"So I thought, and I sent it to
Seattle where S. Baxter bought it
and paid fifty cents for it. There's
liberality for you, hfty cents for a
bear skin worth twelve dollars;
that's the way a hunter is rewarded.
I tell vou that price made me
tired and I quit." P. T. Argn
Disarming an Unseen Foe.
"This was somtime a paradox," as Iniiii
let says. Since, however, the people of
America and other lands ha e been enabled
to pit Hostetter's ibtomach Bitters against
that unseen foe, malaria, it is no loneer a par
adox, but an easy possibility. Whereter
malaria evolves Its misty mmiohi to poison
the air. and decking unwholesome vegeta
tion impregnates the water, there, in the
ery stronghold of mitsma, is the auxiliary
potent to disarm the foe and assure efficient
protection, l'eier and ague, bilious remit
tent, dumb ague and ague cake, no mattet
liow tenaciously they have fastened their
clutch on the sj stem, aie first forced to relax
their grabp and eventually to abandon It al
together. Rut It Is lb preventii c force th.it
should chiefly recommend the Bitters to per
sons dwelling in malaria-cursed localities,
for it Is a certain buckler of defence against
which the enemy is powerless. Cures, .like
wise, tljspepsla, rheumatism, Klrtnej and
bilious ailments.
An interesting incident took
place in the diplomatic gallery of
thchouse when speaker Carlisle
declared the sine die adjournment.
A visitor in tho gallery not
familiar with the prominent men on
the floor leaned over to the door
keeper and asked, "Who is "that
gentleman who just declared the
house adjourned?" "That," said
the door keeper instantly, "is ex
speaker Carlisle." Mr. Carlisle
had then been an ex-speaker
about ten seconds. The door
keeper had profited by his associa
tion with diplomats.

An Oregon Woman.
Oregon claims to have the
handsomest and best women in
the world and Jackson county
claims to have the nerviest woman
in Oregon. She and her husband
have lived for several years in the
foot hills, and John had been plan
ning for some time to build a
frame barn. The unusually open
weather the past season enabled
htm to hew the timbers and rive
the shakes in the mountains, draw
them out, and, with the help of the
neighbors, raise the frame for the
barn. Seeding time was approach
ing however, and he was solicit
ous lest he would not have time
to "roof in" the structure before
beginning his February plowincr,
when his Jbrave wife volunteered
to assist him in the work of nailing
on the shakes, and in spite of his
protests, persisted in the work un
til the roof was finished; nailinrr
on more than half of every course
of boards from the shed-plates to
the comb of the roof, twenty-eight
feet from the ground. The same
lady already has a record of riding
her saddle mare "barebacked" up
the side of a steep mountain, com
posedly carrying her two little
girls and a bucket of huckleber
ries, but her later achievement
certainly entitles her to the palm,
as the bravest woman in Oregon.
PARENTS CRIJIIVAILY JLIAULE,
More than half of all deaths occur
before six years of age. An army of in
nocent, lovely children are swept need
lessly away each year. Parents are
criminally responsible for this. The
death rate of children In England is less
than half this. Acker's English Baby
Soother has done more to bring this
about than all other causes combined.
You cannot afford to be without it.
