have been received in San Francisco
from April 1, '83: for the same period
last year 328,146 cases were received,

There was a strike of the workmen

heavy swell which caused him to loose

him crushing both bones of the left
leg from the ankle to the knee. He
was brought to the hospital yesterday
afternoon for surgical treatment.
The Solano Times says: The straits
of Carquinez are literally swarming
with sealions, and the fishermen are
having a hard struggle with them.
Out of the sixteen salmon in a net
Tuesday only two were secured by
the fishermen, the sealions eating up
before their eyes the other fourteen,
besides tearing the net to pieces.
Frank Johnson, formerly of W. T.

A mortpaM is beincr recorded in
the county clerks' offices in Califor

have mortgaged their property in

bonds to run for fifty years at the
rate of 5 per cent interest per an

new invention, the lingaazranh. '
It is intended to take the place of a
steam whistle on locomotives and
boats, by substituting a machine that
will shout and tell the names of sta
tions and be "piercing and melo
dious" at the same time. The pres

uui ii 13 urn meioaious.
The Tacoma city council unexpect
edly held a SDecial meeting last Mnn.
day night, which they kept secret from
me reporters oi all the papers, and it
was only accidentally discovered that
at that meetinglhey gave away prop
erty of the city to a street railway
company worth 850,000, in vacating
certain streets withont notice to citi
zens. The Tacomanewspaper report
ers don't seem to be very fly.
The Astoria Street Railway Co. has
about 700 feet of piling driven on its
eastern extension and has about I,G00
ieet more to go, though the company
now talks of extending the road as
far as tho Tongue Point saloon.
They also contemplate extending the
roaa to Aiuerurook, and are now in ne
gotiation with owners of DroDertv in
Alderbrook to buy two acres there
and make a family resort and public
park at that end of the line.
Col. N. B. Knicht. one of the rail
road commissioners appointed by
Gov. Pennoyer in opposition to the
commission elected by the legisla
ture, proposes on April 1 to make a
demand on tho secretary of state for
his salary, and if this is refused him
he will sue out a writ of mandamus
requiring the state treasurer to pay
him. The case will be taken, by con
sent of both commissioners, to the
supremo court for settlement.
A singular announcement has been
received by collector Hobson from
the treasury department at Washing
ton, that the use of stamps on
opium has been discontinued. This,
virtually, puts a preminm on smug
gling the drug. The inspectors nor
nobody else can not tell the difference
between opium smuggled or opium
upon which tne duty is taken off, un
less it is stamped. The ruling has
probably been made under miscon
ception of the facts, and will doubt
less be abrogated when the actual sit
uation is understood.
The banksand bars of Snake river.
and also of the Columbia river, con
tain vast treasures of tine gold, which
have been washed by the currents of
these rivers for many miles, and
which have been detached from
ledges by the abrasion of the waters
through them and over them, and
been deposited for hundreds of miles
below these parent veins. In some
places the sand and gravel is so rich
in these deposits, that from 810 to
S20 a day is taken out by means of
rockers and toms, with water and the
use of quicksilver to save the fine
particles, which is termed float gold.
On the Michigan to-day go Chas.
Lundberg and fourteen men to San
Francisco. They take a complete
cannery, buildings, outfit and all, and
on arriving at San Francisco where
most of the men will be hired, the
freight will be unloaded on the Sea
Waif tor Alaska, and turned over to
Captain Johnson. The Behring Sea
Packing Co. have chartered the Sea
Waf, &nd of all the Alaska salmon
companies' establishments this year,
the Behring's Sea Packing Co. will
go about as far north as any of them.
Chas. Lundberg will return here on
the arrival of the Michigan at San

The bids for furnishing ties tor the
Astoria & South Coast Railway Co.
are as follews: Hickman & Hartley,
15,000 35 cents each; L. Michael,
10,000 27 cents; S. A. Miller, 30,
000 36 cents: Hocue & Youne. 30.-
000 33 cents; Wm. Barr, delivered
at Klaskanine, 20,000 22 cents;
Clatsop Mill Co., at mill, 31 one-fifth
cents, at Skipanon, 36 cents; Leavens
& Lanktree, 30,000 28 cents; M. P.
Callender, 10,000 or more, 32 cents.
Mr. Thielsen yesterday awarded the
contracts as follews: L. Michael,
Stella, W.T., 10,000; Wm. Barr, of
Klaskanine, 10,000; Leavens & Lank
tree, of Portland, 15,000. The ties
are of red and yellow fir and tideland
spruce, are to be 6x8 inches, eight
feet long, and are to be delivered at
Astoria or Skipanon at the option of
the superintendent.
Traffic on the roadway was" tempo
rarily suspended yesterday by Mr.
McCann, who fenced across that part
of that ancient thoroughfare adjacent
to his property, several teamsters
made remarks appropriate to the oc
casion, and the city council commit
tee instructed street superintendent
Clinton to remove the obstruction,
which he did. Mr. McCann says
that there is no legal street there.
The city says there is, and there the
mailer is. une way 10 nnu om, ana
that is probably the way Mr. Mc
Cann desires, is to arrest him for
obstructing the street. Then, it there
is a street there, tne city can prove
it in ceurt: if there isn t, it would
seem as if there had been a great deal
of liberty taken with private prop
erty in that vicinity during the last
eleven years. If there is no street
there, there certainly should be one.

Last week two horses were stolen
from the stable of P. M. Bynearson",
near' Oregon City. The thief took
one first, and after going a short dis
tance the horse threw him and
jumped into the pasture. The fellow
went back and took another horse
and saddle, and next day broke into
a house near Mohalla, taking provis
ions, etc. A constable and posse
went in search of him and found him
while asleep in a barn not far away.
While tho constable was reading
the warrant to him, he drew a revol
ver and fired and the constable and
posse tookjto their heels. One of
the men secured the burglar's horse,
which proved to be the one he had
stolen from Bynearson. Next day a
house near by was broken into and a
repeating rifle and 40 rounds of am
munition stolen. The sheriff of the
county and a posse are in hot pursuit
of the robber, who from his descrip
tion, is saPDOsed to be an escaoed
convict named Chambers. It is sup
posed he will make a lively fleht
before he will be taken.
Some Salmon Surmises.
It is difficult to quote the market in
a satisfactory way. There are many
inquiries, but with the pack so
largely sold ahead very little actual
business is being done, upon which
to base quotations. It is hardly neo-
essary to say that the very firm tone
heretofore reported is still strongly
maintained and tne indications, as
we view them, are ot higher prices in
the near fntnre. The pack will not
be as large as anticipated and there
are some dealers who openly avow a
disbelief that the futures already
sold will be paoked. In such an
event outside 'prices must certainly
be realized on packs of established
reputation. San Francisco Herald
of Trade and Grocer and Conner, 14.
Liverpool correspondence London
Grocer, says: The inquiry for
Columbia river salmon is steady,
whilst there is an active demand for
Alaska,'which i3 gainincr favor in con
sequence ot the red color of the flesh.
Some surprise is expressed that
Columbia river salmon has attracted
so little attention this year, but when
the difference in price between this
description and Alaska fish is con
sidered it should not surprise any
one. With Alaska 'red fish at 81.30
export and Columbia river at S1.C5, a
difference ot 31.40 per case, it is easy
to understand why the former is pre
ferred. As the season advances and
domestic buyers are obliged to enter
tne market to supply current needs,
it is not improbable Columbia river
fish, early delivery particularly, will
be in active reques. San Francisco

How Men Die.
If we know all tho methods of ap
proach adoptod by an enemy we are
the better enabled to ward off the
danger and pospone the moment when
surrender becomes inevitable. In
many instances the inherent strength
of the body suffices to enable it to op
pose tne tendency toward death.
Many however have lost these forces
to such an extent that there is little
or no help. In other cases a little
aid to the weakened Lungs will make
all the difference between sudden
death and many years of useful life.
Upon the first symptoms of a Cough,
uoia or any trouoie ot tue inroat or
Lungs, give that old and wellknown
remedy iJoschee's lierman Syrup, a
oarful trial. It will prove what
thousands say ot it to be, the "bene
aotor of any home."
A Rough Bar at San Francisco.
San Francisco, March 19. Tho
bar at tho entrance to the Golden
Gate is- still breaking badly, and al
though the gale has moderated, bar
bound vessels are prevented from
leaving the harbor until more favora
ble reports can be obtained as to the
condition ot the bar. The steamer
Eva arrived off the heads this morn
ing, after seventeen days ot stormy
passage from Kahului. When cross
ing the bar three heavy seas washed
her decks, smashing in her stern rail
ing and damaging her wheel. The
man at the wheel was caught in the
wreck of the railing and was severely
injured. The captain of the vessel
considers his experience a narrow es
cape from total destruction ot the
Eva.

The following is an extract from
the obituary notice of u Kansas news

A Bis Town on Gray's Harbor.
At last the site of the big town on
Gray's harbor has been decided upon.
That town must be the terminus of
the Tacoma, Olympia & Gray's Har
bor railway, now being surveyed from
Centralia westward.
George H. Emerson, of the North
western Lumber company, at Hoqui
am, on Gray's harbor, has been here
for several days ia consultation with
ex-governor Marshall, of Minnesota,
Col. Ellsbury, and Mr. Spencer, of
St. Paul, Mr. Dondum, ot Chicago,
and others, representing the capital
ists engaged in the railroad enter
prise. Mr. Emerson gave the Orego
nian correspondent the exclusive in
formation that the capitalists named
aDove naa selected a Bite for the
great city on' urays narDor, at a
point below Moquiam. They have
purchased from Mr. Emerson and his
associates to-day 21,000 acres of land,
stretching along Gray's harbor from
one to five miles below Hoquiam, on
the north side and below the first bar
from the outside. They will at high
tide always have thirty feet of water
all the way to the townsite from the
open ocean, and if the government
will dredge the outside bar will al
ways have that at low tide.
The townsite always talked of on
Gray's harbor is at Ned's rocks, some
three or four miles further west, but
this purchase settles the matter. Mr.
Emerson declines to state the terms
of the sale. Tacoma Correspondence

Dangers of Tree Sawing.
On this northwest coast the saw has
largely supplanted the ax in felling
timber, but the change is severe upon
tho woodsmen. After being sawed
partly through, a tree is forced over
by inserting a number of steel wedges
in the kerf, which are driven in with
steel sledges. They are set in as
closely together as possible, and tho
driving ot the wedges frequently re
quires three hours or more. Tho
constant contact of the steol sledges
with the steel wedges results in chip
ping off fragments which fly with
great force, and in numerous instan
ces become imbedded in the flesh of
tho workmen, requiring surgical op
erations to remove them. Many eyes
have been lost in this way, while
arm and shoulder wounds are fre
quent Some means ot protection
against the sharp missile is needed.
