How the People of the World's Least Known Country Live- A Chinese traveller has been telling of his experience and the things he has seen ifi Thibet, and his tale is printed to-day in Lon don. He has beheld the cloud- piercing temples of jade, gold aud I other precious materials. fli Lhassa there are four temples in which the Dalai Lama lives. In ulterior Thibet the Teshu Eama rejoices in the possession of three temples. One is a nine-stofied pagoda, containing a statue or Buddha. The Chinese traveller describes the pagoda in a manner that inclines one to believe that he has seen the New York Tribune building. These two distin guished Lamas are most useful citizens, as they can tell all about the future or the past, foretell births and deaths, though that seems a rather useless occupation, and are very much believed in. The Thibetan salutes his superior by uncovering his head and stick- ing out his tongue three times. The country, supposing that this travelled Chinese is truthful, is the hottest kind of a place for the wicked. When a man is arrested his limbs are tied together and he is thrown into a dark room, in which he is tied. He is almost always sentenced to death. If the natives have any shooting match tor tne armies on nana lie is nea to a pillar and used as a target for muskets and bows. If not he is put into a cave where scorpions are plentiful and stung to death by these willing executioners, or else presented to cannibal savages of one part of the country to eat him. Burial is an uncomfottable operation. The body of a dead man is put into a leather bag and hung up to dry for sevon days in his own house, while the priests, whose business must not be a very agreeable one, walk around, chant ing. After that the remains are taken to some mountain peak and buried in two fashions. The flesh is cut up into slices and given to dogs to cat. The truthful Chinese declard that they call this earth interment. They then grind up the bones into pills, which they feed to eagles, and this is called sky interment. There is very little business for the doctors, because sick men, no matter what ails them, are 'smeared all over with butter and put out in the hot sun for better or worse. Disarming an Unseen Foe. "Tills was somtime a paradox," as Ham let says. Since, however, the people of Amerlc.i and other lands have been enabled to pit Hostetter's IStomach Bitters against that unseenfoe, malarla.lt is no Ioneera par adox, but an easy possibility. Wherever malaria evolves Its misty venom to poison the air, and decaying unwholesome vegeta tion impregnates the water, there. In the very stronghold of miasma, ts the auxiliary potent to disarm the foe and assure efficient protection, rever ana ague, duious remit tent, dumb ague and ague cake, no mattet how tenaciously they have fastened their clutch on the system, are first forced to relax their grasp and eventually to abandon it al together. But It 19 Its preventive force that should chiefly recommend the Bitters to per sons dwelling in malaria-cursed localities, for it Isa certain buckler of defence against which the enemy is powerless Cures, like wise, dyspepsia, rheumatism kidney" and bilious ailments. NEAT EEPLIES. Andrew Jackson, it is related was at one time entertained at dinner by a gentleman, and among those present was one of those people who often find their way into story books, etc., as the typn of that offensive class of Americans who are .always trailing their na tionality in the dust in the effort to exalt their individual indepen dence. This particular gentleman, over the "wine and walnuts after dinner, jn order to emphasize his own independence of disposition, of which he was loudly boastlul, remarked -with a rare exhibition of self-complacence to General Jack Jack eon: "I always voted against you, sir." The company was naturally ren dered speechless by this unex pected disclosure, and the scene actually looked squally; but Gen eral Jackson put a stopper on the boastful individual and avoided further trouble by smilingly re marking: "And I, sir, have always fought the battles of my country that you might enjoy that privilege." Another instance of a happy re sponse, is that of an old southern judge but whether judge by court esy or in fact the writer cannot state Tfho must have had the fac- ulty of quick and appropriate re ply pretty well developed, if the story related of him is true. He had been a fierce secessionist, and the fact was not forgotten when, after the war, he re-entered the political arena of his native state. Speaking at a certain place one evening in the interest of his own candidacy for Congress some one in the audience, who evidently had a good memory, inquired: "Didn't you speak here just be fore the war?" "I did," promptly responded the judge. "And didn't you say we could whip the durned Yankees with popguns?" "I did," replied the unabashed judge, "but, confound Vm thpy wouldn t tight that way!
