Czj l Sait! giStoriait. ASTOBIA. OREGON: SATUUDAY MAECn 10. 1S83. There are about eleven thousand remedies mentioned in the fifteenth edition of the "United States Dispen satory"; jet poor humanity gets sick and sore just as usual. The average depth of the Pacific ocean between Japan and Oregon is a little over 2,000 fathoms. The aver age depth of all the ocean is from 2,000 to 2,500 fathoms. There are thousands and thousands of acres of the best farming lands in theTrorldin New England, but the trouble is they are so covered up with rocks that strangers from the west don't appreciate them. Is Kansas the hides of Galloway cattle butchered are cured and made into lap robes. The jet black hair is thick, glossy and handsome, and makes a neater -robe than the buffalo, while it is equally warm. The po3toffico at Mineral Point, Cal., 12,000 feet above the sea level, is the hiahest postoffico in tho coun trv. "But the postmaster," according to an appreciative paragrapher, "says his salary is about tho lowest" The hangman at Fort Smith, Ark., who ha3 sprung the trap on about seventy men, says that if tho con demned will only behave himself and follow directions ho can make his death as painless as turning over in bed. Since all Indian tribes were placed on reservations drunkenness has be come the prevalent vice; and it is a rare thing to find an Indian, old or young, who has anything to buy whis ky with, who isn't drunk four-fifths of the time. A Detkoit couple settled down to eat their dinner, and, when they re turned to the kitchen, discovered that some thief had got away with the hot cook stove. It was found later at a jnnk shop a milo away with the fire still burning. The tide of Mediterranean immi gration has turned to South America. The Italians, tho French and the Spaniards are seeking new homes in a land whose climate is more like their own than that of the northern states. About 300,000 of them crossed the ocean last year, and a still larger nnni ber is expected in 18S9. Tnn life insurance companies have made of the question of longevity almost a determined science, with an ample array of figures and rules. Ac cording to these tho average man who has reached the age of sixty has still a little less, and the average woman who has reached the age of sixty a little more, than fourteen years to live. But the expectation of life does not, relatively, diminish with the ad vance of years, for at eighty the man's chance is somewhat less, and the woman's somewhat more than five years and a half. Ges. Hoiutio Kijco, formerly post master general, has been writing his views on the question of the sizo a man's income should be before he gets married. "It depends," ho says, "on where he lives in city or country what his habits of economy, and above all, whether or not he is sure of a careful, economical wife. If he is all right in these respects and has a small capital, as he shod lnve, to begin with, he may bo entirely safe on an income of from S400 to SG00 a year, and save something out of the larger sum, provided no extensive illness intervenes to prevent They should live frugally, denying them selves costly entertainments, as well as all luxuries, until fairly 'out of the woods." In three years wo shall reach the four hundredth anniversary of an event which has been pronounced tho greatest in human history the discovery of America, by Christopher Columbus. Tho proper mode of cele brating this anniversary was recently taken into consideration by the house committeo on foreign affairs. It ap proved a plan for a permanent exhibi tion under the joint auspices of the forty-six states and territories, and tho sixteen independent nations of tho American continent. To carry out this plan, a national board of pro motion composed of the governors of the states and territories, mayors of leading cities, and of which ex-governor "William Claflin, of Massachu setts is tho president, has been formed to take the exhibition in charge. Washington is peculiarly well fitted to be the site of such a permanent ex hibition. All the patent medicines advertised in this paper, together witii the choicest perfumery, and toilet articles, etc-can bo bought at the lowest prices, at J. W. Conn's drug store, opposite Occident hotel, Astoria. IT NEEDS CONNECTION. The Clatsop County Eoad and Construc tion Company. Crow, 823; Wilson & Fisher, About S550 of the above is delin quent, being subscribed by irrespon sible parties whom the secretary has dnnnod in vain. Tho company has expended about $5,000 and has a well built piece of road extending toward Smith's Point. Unfortunately it begins nowhere and ends nowhere. This is nobody's fault particularly, but tho $5,000 that the citizens have expended in this work would be of somo practical uso if tho city council would take proper steps to liavo con nection with it by a western extension of Jfirst street from the present city limits. Recognizing the necessity of a good thoroughfare this money has been subscribed, and this piece of road built: business principles suggest that a thing that is begun, and begun so well should not be allowed to go half done or quarter done. It is a duty the municipality owes to tho citizens who have put up their coin to see that the road is made of some practical benefit. As it is at present the road is n standing interrogatory, aud if it could speak would probably ask: "And if it is so soon I'm dono fer: I wonder what I was begun for." . IIow Men Die. If we know all the methods of an proach adopted by an enemy wo are the better enabled to ward off the danger and pospone the moment when surrender becomes inevitable. In many instances tho inherent strength or tne uody suinces to enable it to op pose the tendency toward death. Many however have lost these forces to such an extent that there is little or no help. In other cases a little aid to the weakened Lungs will make all tne dmerence between sudden death and many years of useful life. Upon the first symptoms of a Cough, Cold or any trouble of the Throat or Jjuugs, give that old and wellknown remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a carfni trial. it will provo what thousands say ot it to be, tho "beno actor of any home." A certain physician who called hi3 wife "Mrs.", Was br her. from custom, called "Dr.". If pleased he would greet her with con jugal urs., Bat if cross, in tho cupboard ho Lr.
