The Unconquerabla Ocean.
Expert physical geographers
have claimed that there is a close
connection between the relative
extent of coast line and civiliza
tion. They have found that com
merce and good harbors go to
gether, and that laws, learning
and literature follow in their train.
There are many facts which may
be marshaled to support this the
ory, and yet there is nowhere.
that civilization ana progress nave
proved themselves such arrant
failures as on the seaboard. The
history of the last three days vin
dicates the statement.
Fifty vessels are known to have
been wrecked in a recent storm,
and the loss of life was almost be
yond belief. All along the Atlan
tic coast, from Hatteras to Fundy,
the wreckage of ships and men is
to-day coming ashore to bear mute
testimony to our failure. The
ocean has foiled our art. It is as
dangerous to-day as it was when
Paul was wrecked on Malta. It
defies us, and in its solemn ebb
and flow, it is beyond us and
above us.
We have bridled the elements
and made the earth our store
house. "We have electricity, mag
netism, steam and gravity lor our
servants, but the sea eludes us.
We cannot master it, nor foretell
it. We trust ourselves blindly to
it when we must, and escape irom
it thankfully when we may.
It is the last realm of romance left
in the world. We put up our
little futile safeguards about its
edge lights that reach out a mile
or two and lifeboats that reach
across the breakers, but these are
nothing. A storm comes and all
we can do is to wait and count the
dead that are cast on the shore
when the waves are through with
them. The sea is a standing re
buke to our Aryan egotism, and
until we conquer itour work will
not be done.

The New States.
The revised statutes provided
that a star shall be added to the
flag on the 4th day of July suc
ceeding the admission of a new
state. The Dakotas, Montana and
Washington will probably be ad
mitted to the Union next autumn,
and on July 4, 1800, the flag
will legally exhibit 42 stars. But
there is no penalty attached to the
act of the flagmaker who increases
the number of stars before that date
and already national ensigns pro
claiming the existence of 42 states
freely display themselves. The
public impatiently anticipates the
legal date ol admission, uncon
sciously applying the equitable
principle that what has been agreed
upon ought long ago to have been
done, may properly be treated as
actually done

The Ladies Were Shocked.
Mrs. Stanford, wife of the Cal
ifornia senator, caused a great
deal of enbarrassment the other
night when she vas acting as host
ess. A dinner party was given
at the senator's residence one even
ing last week. The wealth and
beaut3' of the capital city was
seated around the mahogany.
The oysters and terrapin had been
.discussed, the sauterne removed,
and the dinner was fairly under
way, when a lady with flushed
cheeks and an indignant voice
ordered one ot the waiters to re
move her portion of fish. Two or
three others did the same thing,
and there was a twinkle in the
eyes of a few of the male guests.
Mrs. Stanford had looked up with
a puzzled expression when the
first lady ordered her plate to be
removed. Then her expression
changed to one of horror. She
gave a hurried order to her butler
and the dinner went on.
There was considerable specula,
tion among the uninitiated as to
what caused the trouble. Finally
the story leaked out. When Sen
ator Stanford was in Paris last
summer he came across a set of
plates which he purchased for the
use of stag parties. They were
hand painted and the decorations
consisted of beauty that was liter
ally unadorned.
It was this set of plates that was
used by the butler to serve the
fish upon, and the exhibition of
the nude caused the indignation of
the ladies, who sent their portions
back.
PARENTS CRHII.VAI.LY LIABLE.
More than half of all deaths occur
before six years of age. An army of in
nocent, lovely children are swept need
lessly away eacli year. Parents are
criminally responsible for this. The
death rate of children in England is less
than half this. Acker's English Jiaby
Soother has done more to bring this
about than all-other causes combined.

Disappointed Loggers-
CniPPEWA Falls, Wis., Marcli
11. The warm, spring-like weath
er of the past week has melted the
little snow remaining and caused
the last hopes of the loggers, who
have worked their men night and
day for the past month to get logs
to the banks to be dissipated.
The men arc coming out of the
woods every day and another week
will find logging operations prac
tically suspended.
The result of this winter's work
will be disastrous to many logging
concerns. Almost every camp on
the cast and west tributaries of
the Chippewa river has broken up,
leaving millions of logs unbanked
The same can be said of the camps
on most of these rivers.
IIO .NOT SI'FFER ANY LOAUESt.
Tired feeling, dull headache, pains in
various parts of the body, sinking at
the pit of the stomach, loss of appetite,
feverislmess, pimples or sores, are all
positive evidence of poisoned blood.
No matter how it became poisoned it
must be purified to avoid death. Acker's
