The Yaquina Republican thinks
that Astoria will never get a railroad
to the outside world as long as the O.
R&N.Co. and Portland can prevent it.
A railroad from Astoria that would
connect with the transcontinental
lines would play havoc with Port
land's commercial supremacy and
spoil the river traffic of the O. It & N.
company, and that the people of As
toria will have to construct the first
railroad they get and overcome out
side opposition.
Next week, says the Oregantan, the
rack will be put in at the fish hatch
ery on the Clackamas, to prevent the
salmon -from ascending the river any
higher than the hatchery. There are
now in the hatchery, ready to be
turned into the river about 500,000
young fish, making the total number
hatched since last August, 5,500,000.
It is expected that the output for this
year will be between C.OOO.OOO and
8,000,000 young fish. All depends on
the run of salmon.
The bill for the better protection

Those interested are urging the
speedy establishment ot the proposed
haven of refuge at a point near Bar
low, Alaska. A building will be
erected under the direction ot the
revenue marine service. It is proba
ble that Captain White, now on de
tached service at Oakland, Cat, will
be detailed to do tho work, with the
advioe of Captain Healey, of the
steamer Bear. The amount appro
priated for the building is $15,000.

'ions and fuel.
Mike Murphy, one of the wealthy
men of Tacoma, was arrested and
lodged in jail the other day for being
so drunk that he couldn't distinguish
when he was on his feet and when on
his head. This condition has become
almost second nature to him and is
one of the evil results ot the rapid
rise in property valuations. When
arrested Murphy had 81.140 on his
person. A few years ago he was the
owner ot some land in the neighbor
hood of Tacoma. which he vainly
tried to sell for 8600. Now his wealth r
is estimates at S750,000.
The amended game law makes it a
misdemeanor to hunt, kill or pursue
deer or elk in this state at any time
between the 1st day of November and
the 1st day of August. Also to sell
or destroy deer or elk at any time for
the purpose of obtaining their hides,
horns or hams. Also, every person
shall be guilty of a misdemeanor who
shall sell, or offer for sale, or trans
port, or carry for the purpose of bar
ter or sale or exchange, the hide or
skin of deer or elk, or who shall sell
or offer for sale or have in his pos
session, or offer to buy any elk or
deer during the time above specified
from November 1st to August ist.
The Puyallup Commerce wants its
readers to believe this: On the Hunt
railroad, near Walla Walla, they were
blasting in a cut. The contractor
had several kegs of nitro-glycennce
in an underground place. A work
man went in to get some and left the
place open. By and by some hogs
came along, and one slipped into the
place where the combustible was kept
The hog found a keg and filled him
self. He came out by and by and
wandered into a stable which con
tained about forty horses belonging
to the contractor. The hog got to
fooling around the horses' hind legs,
when one of them gave Mr. Hog a
good kick. The concussion started
the business, and not a single vestige
was ever found of the hog, of a single
horsp or the stable.
James Abraham has sold a tract of
five acres near E-ist Portland, valued
at S25.000, to the Methodist Epis
copal church for 310,000, on con
dition that they erect thereon a
hospital to cost 8100,000. The terms
have been accepted and work on the
building will commence at once, but
only a portion will be built this sea
son. Mr. Abraham provides that
when the tract is surrounded by the
city, and it ia thought advisable to re
move the hospital, the ground may
be sold, bnt the proceeds must be de
voted to erecting and maintaining a
hospital in or near Portland. The
Sisters of Mercy lately bought a five
acre tract in a sightly place west of
the city for 830,000. where they will
erect a large and handsome brick
hospital, the present St Vincent's
hospital, being surrounded with
buildings and the site ou longer
suitable for a hospital.
No Change In The Situation.
Nothing new transpired in regard
to the strike of the steamboat men
yesterday. There were a num
ber of the strikers gathered at
the rooms of the Masters' and Pilots'
Association, talking over old times
when the O. S. N. Co. controlled the
river and making not very flat tenner
comparisons in regard to the style in
whioh Captain Ainswortb, a. U. Heed
and R. It Thompson managed the
steamboat business and the way it
had been managed since by railroad
men.
Then the boats made fortunes for
their lucky owners, and officers who
attended faithfully to their duties re
ceived many an extra check as en
couragement, occasionally their sala
ries were raised, while now-a-days
their cry is that the steamboats made
no money, and it had been cut after
cut on wages.
One aaurtliat tho reason the steam
boats did not make a good showing
was that the salmon for shipment east
was carried for almost nothiner in or
der that the railroad might get more
ana make a better showing.
Another remarked that the com
pany had let opposition get in and
then tried to run it off, losing a great
deal of money in the operation.
lhe general omnion exnressed was
that the river division orient to be
cut loose from the railroad, and be
put entirely in the hands of a practi
cal steamboat man, and then it it
could not be made to earn money the
company would better sell out to
some one who could make it earn
money. Oregonian, 11.

How Men Die.
If we know all the methods of ap
proach adopted by an enemy we aro
the better enabled to ward off the
danger and pospone the moment when
surrender becomes inevitable. In
many instances the inherent strength
or me Doay sumces to enable it to op
pose the tendency toward death.
Many however have lost these forces
to such an extent that there is little
or no help. In other cases a little
aid to the weakened Lungs will make
all the difference between sudden
death and many years of useful life.
Upon the first symptoms of a Cough,
Cold or any trouble of the Throat or
Lungs, give that old and wellknown
remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a
earful trial. It will prove what
thousands say of it to be, the "bene
actor of any home."
A Grand Concert.
Prof. Pratt's concert announced for
next Thursday's evening promises to
be a grand affair. The programme is
an excellent one, embracing a great
variety of style and varied sentiment
ranging from grave to comic. No
citizen within reaching distance can
afford to miss this rare treat.
