A Eeporter Who Tailed to Secure the
Names of His Cabinet.
During a conversation with an
old newspaper man the other night
he related some interesting rem
iniscences. He said:
"My only experience with Abe
Lincoln was just after his election
to the presidency. I was sent
down to Springfield by the New
York Tribune with the mission,, to
find out all I could of his cabinet
and policy. In those days a presi
dent elect was not besieged as
Harrison has been, and such a
mission as mine was a streak of
newspaper enterprise. I felt my
importance tremendously, and be
ing young and fresh, was immedi
ately sized up by Mr. Lincoln, as I
can see now, though I didn't see
it then.
"He received me kindly in his
office and said pleasant things
about the paper and go on. He
sat facing me, with legs crossed
and nursing his knees, rocked
his body slightly and slowly for-

speaking of several slight matters,
He asked :
"Now, my young friend, what
can I do for you?"
"I drew forth a note book with
much display, produced a pencil,
and said:
"Mr. Lincoln, 1 would be
obliged to you to give me the
names of such members of the
cabinet as you have decided upon,
if any, and what policy you will
pursue, if you have settled upon
anything definite.
"Mr. Lincoln gave me a look
which filled my heart with pride,
for I thought it was full of admira
tion and respect. It makes me
groan when I thiuk of it now.
"He said: 'I shall be glad to do
any thing I can to assist you.'
"Have you settled upon your
cabinet and your policy?'
"Oh, yes,' he replied. 'My
policy is all written out and is in
that trunk over there, with an en
tire list of the cabinet.
" 'I would like to have them,' I
said, if you have no objections.
" Again he gave me that look
of admiration, and if there was
any twinkle in his eye I did not
catch it.
"' Not the least in the world.
You are welcome to the who'e
matter. Nothing wonld give me
more pleasure than to let you
have it. I would give it to you
now, but the fact is I have lost the
key to the trunk.
"Mr. Lincoln went on feeling in
his pockets, regretting the loss of
the pesky key, and condemning
his own carelessness, and em
phasizing his sorrow at the situa
tion andhis inability to accommo
date me, and fairly talked me out
of the office, leaving me at the
threshold with a hearty handshake
and a cordial invitation to come
and see him again. I can im
agine how he must have doubled
up with laughter after he got the
door closed and rejoined the othnr
people who were in the office-
"It took me several years while
I was growing a mustache, to come
to a full appreciation of the per
formance, and then I determined
that the way to freshen the At
lantic ocean was to drop me in it.

British vessel El Dorado, 1,270

Chagrcs, a distance of fifteen
miles. This is the first foreign
vessel that has passed through the
canal from one-point to another.

The election of an enrolling
clerk recently occupied the Ar
kansas legislature. Mr. Hutton,
in nominating a lady, said: "Gen
tlemen who have been named and
elected to offices have had their
reputation and fame borne upon
Eolian winds eastward, where the
bright waters kiss our eastern
shores, back upon soft gales to
pur western slopes, where the
burning sun closes his red eye and
lies down to sleep in the deepen
ing twilight, carried again to the
pebbled feet and rugged shapes
of our north mountains, and with
echoes of silvery cadence borne to
the soft savannahs of our southern
shore. I am unable to say that
the candidate whom I shall name
has such fame, but I will say that
she has the fame of model young
womanhood and high order of fit
ness for tho position she asks at
the hands of this house. I shall
not say that the one I shall name
is as beautiful as the angels arc,
fori hrve never seen an angel,
and know not how beautiful they
are, but I will say if angels look
like her they are beautiful indeed.

frail form of hers is permitted to
tread this terrestial globe she will
never beg, for she has the energy
and determination to make a liv
ing by work."

information at midnight of a relia
ble or official sourca about the
Jefferson canyon trouble between
the Union and .Northern racihc.
There is a prospect of a serioub
conflict, as a large botly of Union
Pacific graders have been sent
there, armed with Winchester
rifles. They have tents and camp
equipments, and their instructions
are to hold the canyon at all
hazards.
