Tacojia, W. T., March 5. All

up to their wharves to-nignt, not
to run again till the order reduc
ing wages on the steameis is
canceled. The first steamer to
tie up, in this city, was the T. J.
Potter, oil the way to Olympia.
She brought with her a large
number of lawyers from Seattle
and down Sound ports, going to
attend the supreme court. The
purser collected fare to Olympia
from these, but they were com
pelled to lay over in Taenma..
The next boat to tie tip here
was the Emma Haymtrd, which
arrived at 0 o' clock. The JVortt
Pacific came in about 9 uVlock
and also tied up.
In Seattle the Whatcom steam
er took the same course, and as
this was the mail steamer at night,
the United States mails are thrown
back.
Captain .Clancey, port captain,
about C o'clock, sent to agent
Ellis, advising him to stop the sale
of all tickets until otherwise ad
vised It is understood that the
steamer Olympian will tie up,
either here or at Seattle, on her
return trip from Victoria, to-morrow.
The Olympian and North
Pacific carry mail from Port
Townsend to Victoria.
There has been no formal meet
ing of the men to resist the reduc
tion of 10 per cent, but each crew
has acted independently of every
other, and all are determined to
resist to the last. Around hotels
the strike is the main topic of
conversation, and the company is
severely criticised" for its action.
The general opinion is that the
company was never so prosperous
on Puget Sound as now, and of
both passenger and freight traffic
have almost more than they can
handle; public sympathy therefore
is with the men.
Tacoma, March 5. Telegraphic
instructions were received to-night
from Superintendent C. W. John
son, of the Oregon Railway &
Navigation company, to the officers
of the Puget Sound boats, to go to
work in the morning at the old
rates until word was received from
Omaha. All the captains and
officers at once sent word back
that they would hear from Omaha
before going to work. They con
sider it unfair to notify them on
Monda3' night of a reduction to
take effect on Tuesday morning,
and it was only on' the personal
request ot Captain , Clancey that
any crews consented to run at all
to-day.
The impression is general that
the company must give way, as
certificated pilots and engineers
are hard to obtain on Pngret sound.
