No preparation for Throat and Luns
Troubles is so prompt in its effects, sc
agreeable to the taste, and so widely
known, as this. It is the family medi
cine in thousands of households.
"I have suffered for years from a
bronchial trouble that, whenever I take
cold or am exposed to inclement weath.
cr, shows itself by a very annoying
tickling sensation in the throat and by
difficulty in breathing. I have tried a
great many remedies, but none does so
well as Ayer's Cherry Pectoral which
always gives prompt relief in returns of
my old complaint' Ernest A. Hepler,
Inspector of Public Roads, Parish Ter

"I consider Ayer's Cherry Pectoral a

For Home Use.
I have tested ita curative power, in my
family, many times during the past
thirty years, and have never known it
to fail. It will relievo the most serious
affections of the throat and lungs,
whether in children or adults." Mrs.
E. G. Edgerly, Council Bluffs, Towa.
"Twenty years ago I was troubled
with a disease of the lungs. Doctors
afforded me no relief and considered
iny case hopeless. I then began to use

Astoeia, March Gth, 18S9.
Editop. Asterian:
There has beers a good deal of
talk and some feeling about the
railroad bridge, in the past tv?o or
three weeks.
J,This I do not propose to open
as there has probably been enough
said.
I feel that there ought to be
something done to unify this peo
ple, not only on railroad matters,
but every other interest in the
community.
I have a kindly word to those
who have this railroad in charge.
There is a sharp feeling in refer
ence to it that has and will con
tinue to divide this community so
long as things stand as they are.
Will you not, gentlemen, sit
down and coolly and deliberatly
and thorougly investigate the
whole matter with a view to har
monizing all interests?
II you will do this, and adopt a
broad and liberal policy, I will
guarantee you such a support by
this whole community as will
make you feel glad, and the road
will go forward with a bound. If
you can only make the whole peo
ple feel that they have a personal
interest in the success of the road,
the work is done.
Every man in this community
is interested in the completion of
that road. If a man has three lots
he should sell one and put it into
the road. If he has ten acres ad
joining or near the city, he should
sell five and put it into the road.
If a man has a home in this coun
ty, or expects to have, if he can
spare $10 he should put it into the
road, and what we all have left
will be worth twice or thrice
what we had at first. There is no
question about that. Gentleman
of the management, it is in your
power to bring about this state of
harmony. Will you do it?
Another thing I would like to
say: No great enterprise or un
dertaking was ever set in motion
and carried to completion through
barroom and street talk. Such
processes are disintegrating.
They -have the same effect on
business life that light gossip and
talking has on the social lif .
There must be design and system
to promote healthy growth and de
velop undeveloped resources.
Lack of system and design is
all that is wanting in Astoria to
day to make her take first rank
among the cities of the great west.
A meets B in some barroom or
on some street corner, and opin
ions are exchanged in reference to
what ought to be done to promote
this or that enterprise. B meets
C in the same way and says to
him, "A thinks that so and so
ought to be done thus and so."
C replies that "A is an old crotch
ety crank, and don't know what he
is talking about, has an ax to
grind, wants to make himself con
spicuous, this is the way it should
be done," etc. And so it goes; an
endless swirr of light, aimless talk
is all that is visible, save a few
cheap shanties occupied olten by
business that hangs like a dead
weight on the community.
Is there some man or set of men
in this town, that can step forward
and bring order out of chaos.
Let the leading business men
call a rousing mass meeting and
let unifying speeches be made, not
on any one enterprise but on the
methods of promoting unison of
action in everything. Let the
meeting adjourn to the next night
and let every one present do his
best to enthuse those that were
not present, and get them to turn
out to the next meeting. Then
let committees headed by wide
awake active men be appointed,
covering all the channels of busi
ness, in operation or that is likely
to come into operation, such as
commerce, railroads, waterways,
manufactures, buildings, streets,
highwaysj agriculture, timber
lands, coal lands, subsidies and so
on throughout the whole list, then
let all those committees gather all
the information possible and report
from time to time to the general
meeting, which should be convened
at least monthly.
In this way a vast store of in
formation can be gathered and
systematised so that it would, be of
incalculable value-tostrangers, and
increase our knowledge of the
great native wealth with which
this lower county is blessed. It
will turn the thoughts and efforts
of the people into practical and
successful channels, and make us
broader and more liberal. It will
strengthen the city government
and make the officers feel that
they have the moral support of the
people. Each individual will feel
that he has in interest in all that
is going on. This is the spirit
that pervades Tacoma, Seattle and.
every other live town, and it all
comes from thorough organization.
l ask again, wilt not the business
men of this place take this matter
systematically in hand, and put to
flight individual selfishness, that
creeps into any town where no
general effort is made for tho pub
lic good.
Astoria has resources beyond
what any of her most sanguine
citizens have imagined, should
these resources remain undevel
oped, for the want of united ac
tion? W. Hampton- Smith.
As a toilet luxnry, Ayer's Hair
Vigor cannot be equaled. It is
highly perfumed, and keebs the
scalp clean and cool.
Going Into Business.
New York, Mar. 5. The name
"Grover Cleveland," in big gold
letters, is painted on the window
at 45 William street, with the
names of Bangs, Stetson, Tracy
and McVeagh. Cleveland is ex
pected by his partners to resume
his law practice immediately.
Nothing equals Ayer's Sarsapa
rilla for purifying the blood, and
as a spring medicine.
New England is regarded al
most exclusively as a manufactur
ing section; but within its limits
$350,000,000 are invested in agri
culture, and the value of the an
nual farm products is placed at
45,000.
