Cougli medicines, Ayer's Cherry Pec
toial is in greater demand than ever
No preparation for Throat and Lunj
Troubles 13 so prompt in its effects, sc
agreeable to the taste, and so widely
known, as this. It is the family medi
cine in thousands of households.
" I hare suffered for years from a
bronchial trouble that, whenever I take
cold or am exposed to inclement weath
er, shows itself by a very annoying
ticklms sensation in the throat and by
difficulty in breathing. I have tried a
great many remedies, but none does so
well as Ayer's Cherry Pectoral which
always gives prompt relief in returns of
my old complaint." Ernest A. Hepler,
Inspector of Public Roads, Parish Ter
re Bonne, La.
"I consider Ayer's Cherry Pectoral a
most important remedy
For Home Use.
I have tested its curative power, in my
family, many times during the past
thirty years, and have never known it
to fail. It will relieve the most serious
affections of the throat and lungs,
whether in children or adults." Mrs.
E. G. Edgerly, Council Bluffs, Iowa.
"Twenty years ago I was troubled
with a disease of the lungs. Doctors
afforded me no relief and considered
my case hopeless. I then began to use
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, and, before I
find flniqlipil nno linttln f.....l ..i.nf r
continued to take this medicine until a
cure was effected. I believe that Ayer'a
Cherry Pectoral saved niv life."
Samuel Griggs, "Waukegan, 111.
"Six years ago I contracted a severe
cold, which settled on my lungs aud
soon developed all the alarming symp

There are three ways to gain
title to the vacant government
land by homestead, pre-emption,
or purchasing timber land.
Any citizen of the United
States, who is the head of a family,
or an unmarried person over the
age of 21 years, is entitled to a
homestead of 1G0 acres.
Persons of foreign birth may
avail themselves of the benefit of
this law by declaring their inten
tions to become citizens; this they
can do immediately after their ar
rival in this country. The land
office fees are from 1G to 22,
which must be paid at the time of
filing the application. Within six
months after his application at the
land office the settler must com
mence living upon and improving
the land, and thereafter for five
years must make this tract his
actual home. Any person quali
fied to take a homestead is also
entitled to 360 acres under the pre
emption law but not at the same
time. Within ninety davs after
settlement on the land, he must
file his application in the district
land office where the land is locat
ed, which will cost $3, but he must
commence settlement before mak
ing his application. At any time
after six months, residence and up
to thirty months after filing his
application, the settler may pay
for the land at the rate of $1.25
or $2.50 an acie, according to
location, and receive his patent
from the United States. Railroad
lands can be bought of the railroad
company. They range in price
from $3 to $G per acre and can be
had on five or ten years' time, with
interest at seven per cent, or by
paying cash.

the conclusion that two-thirds of all
deaths from coughs, pneumonia and

Ploated by Means of Dead Oattle.
It has been said that every
work of invention has its parallel
in nature. But it would not be
anticipated that the method of
raising sunken steaners by forcing
air into casks which have been
secured to thein would find such a
parallel. Yet such has been the
case on the Ohio river, where the
steamer Jiobt. Carson, sank near
Evansville, Ind., drowning thirty
head of cattle that were confined
on the lower deck. Efforts to
pump the vessel out were not suc
cessful, and the boat was aband
oned. A few days later, however,
it was found to be floating, the
fact being that the putrefying
carcasses of the cattle had become
inflated by the gases generated in
putrefaction, and their combined
buoyancy was sufficient to raise
the steamer again.

Exercising on Perry Boats.
The economy of time among
New Yorkers is noticeable, even
when they take their exercises.
On every boat that runs between
this city and Staten island any
where from one to half a dozen
men may be seen briskly walking
around on the upper deck, which
extends completely around the
upper cabin on these boats. They
thus gain from fifteen to twenty
minutes' exercise and diaw long
breaths of salt. air with out losing
a minute of time. On the other
ferry boats the same thing is seen,
except that the pedestrians aro
obliged to walk where the teams
usually stand. It is especially
noticeably on the boats that make
the longest trips. iV. Y. Ex.

A druggist recently recived a
visit from a lantern-jawed, hollow
eyed man, who asked, in cadaver
ous tones, if he could give him any
remedy that would drive awav a
nightmare-like care that was prey- j
ing upon his health. The man of
drugs nodded, and compounded a I
mixture of quinine, wormwood,
rhubarb and epsom salts, with a
dash of castor-oil, and offered it to
the despairing patient, who apa
thetically gulped it down. History
avers that, lor six months he could
not think of anything except new
schemes for getting the taste out
of his mouth. Hoston Globe.
