nian says that Astoria is twenty-five
miles from the ocean.
Now that the legislature Las ad
journed it is difficult to see why the
Oregonian should continue making
those statements.
As usual, in its assertions regarding
Astoria, that geographical statement
is at right angles to the truth.
Paee 73, of an official work pub
lished by the government at "Wash
ington, D. C, states the longitude of
Astoria to be 123" 50': and that of
Cape Hancock to be 124 03'. That
is, 13 minutes farther west
As sixty minutes make one degree,
the 13 min. is thirteen-sixtieths of a
degree. This would be thirteen nau
tical miles.
But the Oregoniun may cavil and
say it meant statute miles. All right.
A nautical mile is 1.15 statute miles,
so the thirteen nautical miles would
be 1-L93 statute miles.
That is the distance of Astoria from
the ocean.
Had the Oregonian given tho fig
ures "25," in its assertion, it would
paw around and grow funny in Tues
day's issue, and say that it was the
fault of the compositor; that "15" was
written, and tho compositor made a
mistake and set it up "25." But the
number of miles is written out "twenty-five,"
and so again tho Oregonian
is convicted of willful perversion of
facts and the utterance of a deliber
ate untruth.
Why?
Probably it can't help it when
writing about Astoria.
True to its instincts the legislature
in its closing hours, defeated ono of
the most necessary and meritorious
bills of the session, speaker Smith's
bill providing for the construction of
a portage railway around the Cascades,
and between The Dalles and Celilo.
This bill was the embodiment of tho
work of the Columbia waterway con
vention for the last two years, but
though a confessedly necessary meas
ure it was defeated. It would free tho
river from the grasp of the monopoly
that now controls it, and that would
never do. In this case of tho people
vs. tho corporations, tho legislature
stood in for tho latter.
President Cleveland last Friday
signed tho bill for tho admission of
the four territories of "Washington,
Montana, North Dakota and South
Dakota and on the Fourth of next July
the flag will have 42 stars on it. Not
since Colorado tho centennial state,
was admitted in 187C, has a territory
been admitted into the American Un
ion, and for tho first time in the his
tory of the government four great di
visions of our country come in simul
taneously as sovereign states. The
new states will send eight senators
and about an equal number of repre'
sentatives to congress.

Another Railroad Scheme.
A great many people speak loudly
against railroads as monopolies, and
in many instances it is only too true.
Yet just at this time, in the language
of Hon. Nat Langel of Jacksonville,
concerning Ben Holladay's railroad,
he said "give us a big slice of tho
monopoly to Jackson county, rather
than the stage monoply of fifteen
cents per mile and passenger walks
half the way and carries a rail to keep
the stage out or the muduoles. We
say give us a monoply from here to
Coos bay and wo will promise not to
"kick" much. Mr. Pengra and others
with whom we have talked recently
have a proposition of this sort. Start
at Ocden. thence on the Central
Pacific ronle to Winnemucca, thence
in a moro westerly direction to (Joos
bay via of Itoseburg or Dram, which
ever is the most accessible, thence
to Euceno City and by way of Salem.
thence via Tillamook, and the final
point being Astoria. The gentlemen
wno have this project under consider
ation are not impractical men, but
men who Enow what they are doinsr.
A part of this great coast system will
be built at an early day we believe.
From Coos bay, opposite Empire City
or Marshueld, to the oiuslaw and
thence to Eugene City will be built
before you imagine. "We got a peep
under the curtain. The iugeno peo
ple are neither dead nor asleep. Now
what is Boseburg going to do about
a road to connect with the same:
"We had better look to our interests
somewhat it seems to us. From New
Orleans to Portland the great system
of the S. P. was only built by piece

TRANSACTIONS IN SALMON.
San Fbaxcisco, Feb. 21. The cir
culars from tho Johnson-Locke Mer
cantile company, of February 18, re
port heavy transactions " in the
salmon pack of the coast for 1889.
The movement began in British Co
lumbia with tho sale of 75,000 cases,
followed by other sales, amounting
in all to 190,000 cases, of which 95,000
cases are for the English account,
and 95,000 cases for San Francisco
buyers on the English and Australian
account.
Operations were then commenced
on the future pack of the Columbia
river, resulting in sales of 100,000
cases.
Alaska salmon then received atten
tion. The Johnson-Locke Mercantile
company reports sales last week of
158,000 cases of Alaska salmon of the
pack of 1889; other local brokers,
30,000 cases, and the Chicago oper
ators, for eastern account, o.uuu.
The sales for the pack of 1889 up to
February 18, are reported at 553,000
cases, or about one-half of the antici
pated catch. It is estimated that
other negotiations have been closed.
The preparations for the Alaska can
neries are the most extensive yet
known and it is hoped that there will
be no disappointment in these enter
prises, though grave fears aro freely
expressed.
