C?D t gaftg gstotfau. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY -FEBIHJARY 19. 1883. A strike among tho seamen and firemen on ocean steamers now going on in England lias began to be felt at Boston, where men claiming to repre sent English sailors are preventing vessels from obtaining crews. Tnn Chicago Globe asserts that less than 30 per cent, of the population of that city is foreign. Further, that the bulk of the foreign population is in dustrious and law abiding, the an archists and their congeners being only an insignificant portios. Ii u said that the trustees of a heavily mortgaged church in Lincoln, Xeb , in order to raise money to clear the debt, sold advertising space on the walls of tho auditorium and that 'handsome advertising cards appear in conspicuous places, tho charge be ing 3 and the agreement including an indorsement from the pulpit." PrrrsBUKa has a bored well that furnishes fresh water, salt water, and gas for illumination. Tho fresh water comes up from the depth of 100 feet, tho other water and gas come up from the depth of 2,000 feet. A pipe has been put down that brings up only the salt water and gas, while tho fresh water issues up on tho outside of the pipe. The Canadian government will soon adopt a policy of hostility against im migration. All alien laborers, except British, will be prohibited from com ing to Canada, and the funds which the dominion government has hither to granted in aid of immigration, amounting in the aggregate to a quarter of a million sterling, will be withdrawn. The hoirs of Colonel Nicholas Lotz, who died in tho last century, have held a meeting at Beading, Penn., and have taken step3 to sue tho govern ment for 817,000,000. Lotz, it seems, furnished the Americau army with hay during the revolution, for which ho was never paid. His descendants will probably havo Lotz of trouble in collecting the money. Patch doors arc said to be great improvements over wooden ones. They are formed of two thick paper boards, stamped and molded into pan els and glazed togother with glue and potash and then rolled through heavy rollers. After being covered with a water proof coating and one that is fireproof, they are painted, varnished and hung in their usual way. ' mi - There is a deed on record in the clerk's office at Gainesville, Go., which conveys to tho purchaser all the land south of tho grantor's door. The grantor or maker lived near Clarke Creek church, and the deed covers all the surface of the earth south of that point If the heirs of the purchaser could hold the premises conveyed, the Rothschilds, Vanderbilts and Goulds would be the veriest beggars compared with them. It Came at Last. Near the corner of Wall and Pearl street New York thirty-nine jears ago, editor David M. Stone of the Journal of Commerce noticed a strong odor of gas from the street. He made a complaint when the odor became unbearable, in December, 1849. again in 1850, once in 1851, once in 1866 and again in 18S8, but all these were fruitless. He nlso made during these years numberless appeal to the police, board of health and other au thorities, but they disregarded his re quests. For ten years the street has been so pormented with gas that if a cobblestone were lifted out the odor would bo noticed for many blocks. But editor Stono has had his revenge in a qniet way. Last Tuesday after noon tho heavy iron covering of an electrio conduit manhole near the place of tho leak and tho stones of the pavement for sis or eight feet on three sides of it went up into the air, and the shock of the explosion was felt thronghout the neighborhood. No one happened to bo passing and no one was killed. The gas had evi dently leaked into tho vacant space and the electric wire had ignited it. The manhole is being repaired, but the gaspipe will be left An adjoin ing building may be the scene ot the next explosion. Editor Stone the next day published in his editorial columns a long leader on the subject, telling of his many attempts to get the leak repaired sinco 1819. The Postmaster's Ordeal. "This la terrible," moaned the post master at Chugglesville, as he mopped the perspiration from his forehead. "When does the" began a man at the window. "Next mail from Indianapolis gets in at '2-30," announced the suffering postmaster, interrupting mm. "How did yon know what I want ed Y' gasped the man at the window. "Haven't I answered that question fifty times to-day?" wailed the post master. "Don't I know that halt the Republicans in this town are try id g to get my post-office away from me? It's awful to talk on this subject, bo please go away. Chicago Neics. w m mM m ..... Ludlow's' Ladies' 530)0 Fino Shoes; also Flexible Hand turned French Kids, at P. J. Goodua-'8.
