ci is. Br K Sfttc gmtjj gtoriuu. ASTOBIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 13. JS33. D1D1TT KNOW IT WAS LOADED. The lower house at Salem yester day passed bouse bill No. 37 by an al most unanimous vote. It is a case of "didn't know it was loaded." The matter ot pilots is a secondary consideration. "What the members o the house did yesterday was, so far as they could, to hand over the state of Oregon to a monopoly, which will control from the Snako to the Bea. The Northern Pacific dominates the O.E.&N., and Henry Villard domi nates the Northern Pacific Yesterday's work was a good stroke of business for the O. K. & N. Co., cleverly planned and cleverly exe cuted. The house of representatives at Sa lem has betrayed its tru6t, and possi bly in ignorance, perhaps with good intention, has fettered the commerce of the Columbia, about which so much is said and sung, in a way they, may hap, little dream of. Nothing better can be expected of the senate than a repetition and en dorsement of the houso's folly. " Maybe, sometime, in the future, when the wheat is going'to the Sound over the O. R. & N.'s rails, and to San Francisco in the holds of the O. H. k N. steamers and vessels under 1,000 tons aro admitted to Portland, the members of the legislature may hold a postmortem over the remains and mentally plead the'same old sorrowful excuse "Didn't know it was loaded." PLEASE SPECIFY. Usdek the head, "A Gross Misrep resentation," the Oregonian of the 12th gets in its usual whack at As toria, tho pilots, and in general, all who live below Tongue Point, and who are, because of bo residing, a bad lot. This time it is the schooner Michigan's mishap. The Oregonian says untruthful statements were made about that matter. Will the Orego nian, without indulging in "a mere generality," which it justly abhors, kindly designate what, if any, "un truthful statements" about that mat ter were mado by The Astorian? Tho Oregonian can be honest if it wants to. That is its own business: but it should bo truthful. In this in stance its oharges are vaguely false. If it will specify its accusation we will undertake to show that bo far as this paper is concerned tho Oregonian is more than ordinarily mendacious. It were a pity that tho Oregonian should lose its reputation; being about the only institution connected with the preseut attempt to cinch As toria that has a reputation worth los ing. "The Astoeiau ought to be ashamed of itself," says the Oregonian, for publishing the truth. Indeed. "What, then, shall we say of the Oregonian, in publishing so palpable a lie, as that in yesterday's issue about the Michigan's not employing a pilot? Feminine Fencing. At one ot the receptions on New Year's day there was a little case of rapier thrusting between two ladies. The daughter of a famous man, who is noted for her aristocratic ten dencies, met the wife of a western of ficial, who was presented. The latter said: "I have lis J the pleasure of meeting your father, Miss "I dare say," replied the yonuger lady, languidly. "Papa, in hia posi tion, meets all sorts ot people." The western lady flushed, nnd re plied like a flash: "I should judge so, especially when Le is at horns." Washington Post. Strode Tlie Nail on The Head. One of the most marvelous moun tain experiences on record was related yesterday by T. B. Handley to an Of- egonian reporter. The gentleman, accompanied by J. F. Byan, book keeper ot the Truokeo'Lumbox com pany of ban Francisco, started from Tillamook bay a few morning3 ago on horseback. They managed to scram ble up tho first grade, which is noted for its steep incline to all Tillamook tourists, and bad descended a third ot the distance on the other side when Mr. Ryan's horse stumbled. Before he could recover his lost footing, ho dashed over the precipice with his rider. They had fallen Bixty feet when Mr. Ryan managed to dis engage himself nnd grasp a project ing iimD, winch -nrouably saved his life. Tho horse rolled down ICO feet, and remained there with his head doubled under him as thongh dead. After Mr. Ryan had been rescued from his perilous position, the gentle men went to look after the horse. Finding him still nlive, they rolled him down twenty feet more to the bottom of the ravina The animal, being urged for some time, at last re gained his feet, and was found to be comparatively uninjured. One place in particular on the face of the bluff would, no doubt, have caused the death of both borae and rider it they had stayed together and tumbled a few feet to the right. It was where a tree had fallen over the cliff and remained with the large end sticking a few feettn the air, inclin ing directly toward tho spot from where the horse started to fall. As it was, the Bteed missed the tree by al most a hair's breadth. The fortunate man and beast finished the journey with no other mishap. Oregon ian, 12. ., ADVICE TO MOTIIKBS.
