I tried Ayer's ITair Vigor, using only

R. T. Schmittou, Dickson, Tenn.
" I have used Ayer's Hair Vigor in my

A WICKED KING.
A Passionate Young Despot and His
Many Victim's.
If the report which comes from
Zanzibar is. true, Mwanga, the
young despot of Uganda, who in
two years has earned a reputation
for cruelty and bloodshed not ox
celled even by that of the deposed
King Thebaw, of Burmah, has
been violently removed from the
seat of power his ancestors have
held for seventeen generations,
and his brother now reigns in his
place. Whether this news bodes
good or ill to the four or five white
missionaries of England and
France now in Uganda caunot yet
be told.
This young man, only twenty
three years old, has had much to
do with bhapmg some events in
which the whole world has been
deeply interested. II he had not,
for the first time since Speke dis
covered the greatest of African
lakes, closed the north route from
Victoria Nyanza to Lake Albert
against all white men, Einin
Paslia would never have lacked
ammunition, and there would
have been no Stanley relief expe
dition. It was the harrowing sto
ries of Mwanga's great slave raids
in which he has employed thou
sands of soldiers far the purpose
of supplying his Arab friends with
all the poor bondsmen he desired,
that gave an impetus to the anti-
slavery agitation which has pro
duced the blockade of the east
Africa coast, and is the talk of
every capital in Europe.
Mwanga has been described by
the white men at his court as a
frivolous, weak, cowardly boy,
easily led by his favorites, ex
tremely passionate, and capable,
under the influence of fear or an
ger, of almost uuheard of cruelty.
ne signauzea nis accession to
power by the atrocious murder of
bishop Hannington, and it was his
hope to destroy in a week all the
converts the missionaries had made
in six successful years of labor. The
heroism and fortitude with which
scores of native Christians, many
of them mere children, met death
at the stake, is hardly surpassed
in the annals of martyrdom. Not
one of them recanted, even when
told that their lives would be
spared if they adjured the Christ
ian faith. "Can you read?" was
the question the king usually asked
the converts when they were
brought before him. "Yes," re
plied all who had been taught in
the native schools. "I'll have no
readers in Uganda," the king
would shout, as he hurried them
off to be chained to trees and
burned. In a single day seventy
men thus met their fate, and the
head executioner told the king he
had never seen men die so bravely.
The blood-thirsty king merely
laughed and remarked that God
did not seem able to rescue the
Christians from his power.

Probably the raot unique rail
road pass issued this year is that
of the Silverton Railroad company
of Colorado. It is a thin silver
plate, about the size and shape of
the passes in general use. On tho
upper lefthand corner of the face
if the plate is a vignette showing;
a curve of the, road between Silver
t m and Ouray. The pass is rolled
from silver bars and stamped.
The vignette and lettering, with
the exception of the President's
name, being in relief. The name
is intaglio, and is gilded, as are
the vignette and scroll. The num
ber of pass and name of person to
whom it is issued are engraved by
hand.

Tillamook Bock Lighthouse
i
C. D. McClure, lampist of the
Thirteenth lighthouse district un
der Major T. H. Handbury, who
left here for Tillamook rock on
the 16th of December, has re
turned. He had rather an un
pleasant experience in landing on
the rock. The cage, attached to
a derrick, in which all visiting the
rock must be hoisted up, was low
ered for him and the boat brought
up to it. .He jumped into the
cage all right, but before it could
be hoisted abig sea swept around
the end of the rock burying him in
the icy water and sweeping the
boat far away. However this is
uo uncommon thing at the rock
and is looked upon as a joke by
all save the man who gets wet.
Mr. Mi-Cliire sa3 that the en
gines and sirens aud machinery ot
the lamp have all been thorough
ly overhauled; and are in fir-t cl.us
condition. The Hushes of the light
and tho fog signals are given on
time to a second. The lattice
work iron shutter designed to
protect the plate glass of the Ian
tern from damage dur.ng heavy
storm is in place and works well.
The light is one of the best on tin
coast. Mr. George Hunt, the
principal keeper, is a man of ex
perience and runs the station in
the best manner. The lamp con
sumes seven and three-fourths
gallons of oil per night.
Great Britain and Franco are
now lighted by electricity and it is
probable that some of the princi
pal lighthouses on the coast ot
tnis countrv will bo liirhtea in tne
same manner before long, but be
fore this can be done the lanterns
will have to be changed, which
will cost considerable.
Mr. McClure says there have
been a good many sea lions around
the rock of late fishing for salmon.
One of these monsters will dive
down and in a short time come up
with a salmon in bis mouth, give it
a fewhakes, "which slap it around
his ears so that the crack cm he
heard on the rock, and breaks the
fish in two. He will then swallow
one half and dive after the remain
der and swallow it. There is one
huge old sea lion, which is blind
in one eye, and has evidently been
driven forth on the cold chanties
of an unfeeling world by the oilier
lions, as he haunts the rock, and is
made a sort of Det of bv the light
keepers, who throw him biscuits,
which he eats. He will allow
them to come within ten feet of
him when basking on the rock
They call him "Dick," and he ap
pears to know his name, as when
he is swimming around the rock
and they call to him, he will raise
his head and answer with his mu
ral howl. The other lions swim
around the rock, but evince no de
sire to cultivate the acquaintance
of the dwellers thereon.
On the rocks near the shore is a
regular rookery, where hundred.
of these sea lions congregate dur
ing the fishing season, and live in
clover, figuratively speaking, feast
ins on fat chinook salmon. Orego-
nian, 30.

Harrison's Cabinet.
Washington-, Jan. 29. It was
learned to-night from a gentleman,
whose infornntion is direct, that
four places in Gen. Harrison's cab
inet have been definitely settled
and, while not all of them have
formally accepted, there is no
doubt about their doing so.
In tho first place Blaine wrote
to Gen. Harrison more than ten
days ago, accepting the secretary
ship of state. Alli-on will be the
next secretary of the treasury.
This has unquestionably been de-
o ded on, and, althoueu Allisjn's
lelier accepting ilics honor has not
been written, it will be within a
week. Alger will be a member
of ihc cabinet, taking the position
of secretary of war, and, as an
nounced some time sine, Wana
