On Monday last, says tho Pendle ton Tribune, under the provision of the new law the three eicctora. chosen in November last, met at tho oapitol in Salem and cast the vote of Oregon for Benjamin Harrison for president and Lovi P. Morton forvice-president of the United Statos. The three electors were Charles W. Fnlton of Astoria, William Kapus of Portland, nnd Robert MoLean of Grants Pass. Direotly after the vote of the state was thus cast and duly recorded, a certified copy was sent to Washing ton and another given to elector Ful ton, who as messenger in charge of the vote, immediately started for the national capital to deliver the im portant document to the president of tho senate. All three of the electors were anxious to be selected as mes senger, Kapus, of Portland, particu larly bo, who possibly in addition to the honor of the position desired to revisit his old home in New York and live over for a while the scenes of his early manhood days. But the law only makes provision for one of the cho sen electors of each state to act as messenger, . leaving the manner of their choice to the electors them selves. It eo happened that the three Oregon olectora recently met in Portland and it was suggested that it be then decided who should aot as messenger. A variety of plans were suggested, pulling the long straw. shaking dice or drawiug lots, none of which met with approval and it was finally decided to adopt the good old way of cutting the cards to determine the matter. A deck of cards was promptly secured and submitted to a series of shuffles that was self satisfy ing and then the momentous question arose. a3 to who ahould cut first, which was promptly solved by elector Fulton stepping up and raising a ten spot as his card. This was an over aver: ge cut but there were sixteen other cards in the deck that would beat it and elector Kapus next took his turn with a confident 'smile upon his face aa though he knew just how far downto dip to fish out an ace. But he didn't, for much to his disgust only a seven spot rewarded his effort. Elector McLean having no knowledge of tho mysteries of the cabalistic pasteboards trusted entirely to his lnck to spot the "tenner" that Fulton bad secured but all his bones were dashed to earth when he exposed the lowest card in the deck, an msicmu cant, paltry dence. and Fnlton was declared the lucky winner. Eleotor Fulton was a passenger on the east hound train passing through Pendle ton Tuesday morninz with the vote of Oregon safely stowed away in an inside pocket. Old Man Tic;:s Is Heard From. Oodeh, Jan. 18. Old man Wigga. a well kno.wu weather prophet of northern Idaho, announces that the winter yet to come will be the sever est ever known. He bases bis pre diction on the assertion that the moon ia nway out of its placo in tho heavena, being several degrees fur ther north than usual, which in Tiis opinion, is an unfailing sign of cold weather. "I never knew it to fail," he said the other day, in discussing the mat ter. "If the moon had only cone a little out of its way I wouldn't say a word, but here it is at least 1,000 miles further north than it has any business to be. Three times now since I have lived here thia thing baa happened, and there has always been killing weather. One time it was so cold that the earth cracked and men were frozen stiff standing up. I never saw the moon so far north before though, and I tell you to look out for what's a coming." The Now Discovery.
