"Eapid Growth of New York Oity.
Tho growth of tho city of New
York in the past thirty years has
been perhaps without a parallel.
The New York Jlerald on the 1st
instant reviewed this remarkable
prowth at co!isidernh!e leticrtli. In
1859 ihero were in Now Yurk but
five lines of street railway. There
aro now thirty-two. In 1859 thoro
were not more than 4u0 liocseears
in use; now there are over 2,000.
But the greatest chanjjo in stieot
travel is the elevated roads, with
their 32 miles of tracks on iron
stilts. Thirty years ago the 400
horsecars earned 8,000 a day;
now the aggregate daily receipts
of the street railway companies is
estimated at over $40,000 while
the elevated roads carry 700,000
passengers every day in the year,
showing a daily income of 35,000
so tho enormous sum of 675,000
is spent for car fare by 1,500,000
passengers during each twenty
four hours.
The sub-committee of the sen
ate finance committee has agreed
to return the dutv on lumber from
$3 per thousand feet, as contained
in the bill originally reported, to
$1.50 per 1,000 feet. This rate
will be made with the proviso con
tained in the Mills bill that Can
