The schooners Anna Bed; Ada Dolphin and Oracle will be sold at Port Totvnseud by the United States marshal on March 26th. Printed matter can bo copied on any paper of an absorbent nature by dampening the surface with a weak solution of acetate of iron and press ing in an ordinary copying press. 01d writing may be also copied on unsized paper, if wet with a weak so lution of sulphate of iron mixed with a weak solution of sugar syrup. "Navigation has closed on tho Co lumbia,'' says some of our California exchanges. Gentlemen, you are misinformed. Vessels, small and large, sail and steam, go to and fro, and up and down on the broad bosom of the Columbia, which by day re fleetsthe azure of the heavens and by night gives back the borrowed beauty of the stars. The new uniforms for the officers of the Jfanzanita and other govern ment vessels on the roast are some thing etunning. They are ringed, streaked and striped, and are just as pretty as a red wagon painted blue. Tho chief engineer's coat has a propeller in silver on the lapel, and the chief officer's coat is just dizzy with adornment. J. C. Smith of Bradbury, has in vented a machine to fill the needles used in knitting fish nets. It is sim ple in construction and is made to fasten on a table, and occupies but little space. It is worked by hand with a crank, and is guaranteed to fill three needles a minute and being fitted with a tension, keeps the thread tightened evenly and never breaks the tongue of the needle. Articles of incorporation were filed in the secretary of state's office on the 10th, by the S.-lem, Tillamook & Astoria Railway company. John G. Wright, J. W. Maxwell, B. S. Cook, W. F. Boothby and I. A. Manning are tho incorporators. Cupital stock, 100,000 of $100 each. Object, the building and operating of a railroad from Salem, via Tillamook, to Asto ria. Principal office, Salem. Those who save hides for the mar ket 6hould understand that their val ue is affected by very trifling circum stances. A bide shonld bo dried by laying over the edge of a thin board fence, and not on a bush or tree top. A salted hide lying an hour in the sun will be "hair slipped" and lose one-third its value, as do moth eaten hides and hides containing Cvo or more grubs. Such hides count as culls. The minister stretohes a large piece of wuue ciom across one end of the room. On it is drawn in charcoal n representation of a leopard, with its moutu open and its tail trailing on the ground. "Can the leopard change its spots?" says the preacher, repeating the Biblical question. It can by a simple process. Each one in the congregation pays 81 and buvs a spot until the leopard resembles" a white calf. Then the camn is .. peated until everybody, including the leopard, is perfectly satisfied with the result. Few people indeed, among the many millions scattered throughout the length and breadth of the union, would believe that there is a section of the United States where the result of the presidential election will not be known untill July, 1889, eight months after the official returns are published to the world. Such is the fact, however. The settlers at St Michaels, the Seal islands, and those lomiciled along the banks of the Lower Yukon will remain in uncer tainty as to the outcome of the con test uuti! after the midnight sun has come and gone during the midsum mer of next year. Even the denizens ofKodiakand Ounalaska will have to wait patiently for the news until the end of March, there being no communication whatever between San Francisco and those settlements during the winter months. m PERSONAL MENTION. Writing to the editor of thi3 paper under date of the 8th inst., a promi nent citizen of Albany and a leading spirit in the proposed Astoria-Albany railroad, says: "Albany wants the Astoria rail road and is willing to build this end of it. The company referred to in your telegram will be incorporated at once for this purpose. There is a five-masted schooner on this coast, and she is, as far as known, the first one built, and now that the Governor Ames is wrecked the only one afloat in the American merchant marine. Her name is tho Louis, and she ie owned by the Simpson Lumber company. The Louis was built at Coos bay, Oregon, nnd her dimensions are: Length over all, 210 feet; beam, 38 feet; depth of hold, 18 feet. She is of 819 tons register, and her carrying capacity is 250,000 feet ot lumber. On her first voyage to Sju Francisco she brought 1,500 tons of coal and 160,000 feet ot lumber. The mast3 of this novelty iu marine architecture are named as follows, commencing from the bew: foremast, mainmast, miz zenmast, spaukermast, jiggermast.
