Ajt old m in on the Vermont border.
Bays the New York Herald, died the
other day, and in his last hour he con
fessed that he had been a smuggler
for forty-seven straight years and had
baaten the government out of tenB of
thousands of dollars.
Hebtenstein, the late president of
Switzerland, had a salary of 83,000 a
year. He kept no carriage, and he
used to walk to his office every day.
The amount of work that he under
took to do confined him to his desk
and deprived him of that exercise
which a man used in early life to out
door activity requires. The maladay
of which he died was senile gangrene,
although he was only sixty-three years
old. This was because he did not
eliminate through exercise the waste
matter that clogged his organism.
Not long ago there were artillery ex
periments .to be made. Hertenstein
went to watch them. Ho stood on
ialf-thawed ice. A chilblain ensued.
This led to a bad inflammation of the
great toe, which was removed, and
gangreen followed. The left leg was
cut off above the knee. Amputation
relieved the pain, but the poison was
too much in the system for this sur
gical treatment to save life. Morbid
symptoms showed themselves in the
pit of the stomach. There were two
days of lethargy, followed by'two days
of delirious fever. The latter were,
however, broken by lucid intervals in
which the president gave directions
about the current business of his
office. He then sank, grew insensible
and went out.
Salem, Tillamook, And Astoria R. E.
Fending the conference of the
Salem board of trade committee and
the officials of the Astoria & South
Coast R. R, a letter showing the feel
ing of the Tillamook people on the
projected line is received in Salem
from F. M. Lang of Nestocton, Tilla
mook Co., who served as assessor of
Tillamook county formerly and knows
well of what be speaks. He says,
among other things:
"Noticing that your city is endeav
oring to make an earnest move to
ward cooperating with Astoria look
ing to the building of a railroad to
Tillamook, I wish to say that we are
fully alive to the importance of such
a road, but of course we are too poor
to do much, yet something might be
done by the citizens here in seuring
a free right of way through the coun
try. Much of the route, in fact nearly
the whole of it, is through a contin
ued succession of narrow valleys and
passes, every foot of which is claimed
and settled, and an earnest move in
the matter on the part of our citizens
might do a great deal toward easing
the right of way, or might clear it
altogether. I have traveled over the
route several times and can say that
it will be no trouble at all to build a
road from Salem to Tillamook."

this morning from Lieut. Cowle at
Philadelphia, stiitinc that the dna
mite cruiser Vtsuviv&.nl lur third

speed of 21 64 knots an hour, an ex
cess of 1.64 knots over the speed re
quired by the contract. The trial
took place in deep water in the Dela
ware bay, over u two and one half
mile course, the vessel running b.ick

BOTH SIDES STUBBORN".
Charleston, W. Va., Jan. 11 The
dead lock in the senate continues.
The Republicans say they will not
allow it to be broken until the Dem
ocrats abandon the questions now in
courts or until the contests are set
tled. The house cannot work until
the senate organizes.
THET. ARE IMPROVING.
New York, Jan. 11. The United
States steamer Yantic was inspected
by the health officer this morning.
He reports Lieut. Miles in a very pre
carious condition, and cadet Briston
and the seaman Keller are much im
proved. The rest of the crow are
well.
BOTTESnOGED.
Trot, Jan. 11. At a sparring ex
hibition last night between Kilrain
and Mitchell, rotten eggs were thrown
at the principals from the gallery.
THE UNION PAClrlO.
New York, Jan. 11. It is again
asserted that the "Union Pacific en
gineers are actively engaged in look
ing up routes for an extension from
Ogden west to the Pacific coast.
They have prepared reports on the
advantages of both the i'erdonia and
Beckwith passes through the Sierra
Nevadas, the former being the moro
favorable. The surveyors, instead of
following the usual course through
the Ferdonia pass from Mountain
Meadows, turned more to the west
and nround to Bridge creek. On this
route the country is comparatively
level and well timbered. It opens
up a new country and does not paral
lel the Central Pacific line. It con
tinues to Madeline plains, sixteen
miles distant, and turns northward to
the south fork of Pitt river, in the
southern part of Modoc county. From
this point the route will be down the
valley to Alturas, whence ouo spur
will run north to Oregon and another
southward to the northern end of the
Sacramento valley, probably along
the north fork of the Feather river to
Oroville. It is the intention of the
company to complete the line to San
Francisco.
FREIGHT RATES.
New York, Jan. 11. R. P. Buck
relates concerning the recent advance
of freight rates: "We recently told
a vessel at San Francisco for 517,000.
that wonld have been worth about
512,000 here when she sailed."
SULLIVAN KILRAIN.
New York, Jan. 11. The text of
the Sullivan-Kilrain agreement is
printed. It is signed by Sullivan and
by Harding for Ivilram. It is pro
vided that the man winning the toss
shall give the opposite party ten days'
notice of the place. If either man
shall be absent bo forfeits the battlo
and money. The expenses for ropes
and stakes shall be equally borne,
share and Bhare alike, by the parties.
me JNew iork Ultpper is mado tuo
stakeholder, and deposits of 55,000
have been made. The final deposit
must be put up not later than the day
or the toss for the choice of battlo
ground. Either party failing to
make good the amount due at the
lime and place named shall forfeit
the money down.
In case of magisterial interference
the referee, if appointed, or tho
stakeholder, shall name the next
time and place of meeting; if possi
ble on the same day or in the same
week, and either party failing to ap
pear at the time nud place specified
by that official is to lose tho battlo
money. The stakes are not to be
given np unless by mutual consent,
or until fairly won or lost by n fight.
Due notice shall be given to both
parties of the time and place of civ-
mg the money up. The witnesses to
the agreement aro L. li. Allen and
John W. liurnett.
