The sloop Minerva arrived at .-Empire on Monday oi last woek, eigne aays out irora Astoria, in charge of her owner A. H. Cousins, proprietor ot tho Arugo lintel. .The Minerva left the bay on Nov. 19th, with a crew of four,"in charge of 'Lyman Nutter, to engage in deep sea fishing. Tho first night out a catch of about 700 pounds of fish was made in fnur houts, when strong southwesterly weather st in. The little vessel w.is driven to the northward, and giitiing short of provisions she was 'headed tor the Columbia, where she arrived safely. -Mr. Cousins .received a, letter from the sailors, dated Dec. $tb stating that the captain was acting dishonest with him. He immediately started overland, and found the sloop at Astoria, but the captain was absent. 'Wishing to get back home as quickly as pos sible, Mr. Cousins took charge of the vessel himself: and started on the trip. While being towed over the Columbia bar the line parted, and the vessel shipped some heavy seas, but escaped with no serious damage. The trip down was a rough one. The second day out it commenced to blow from the south'ard, with a very heavy sea running, and the mast broke off close to the deck. After a hard day's work the crew managed to get the broken mast and rigging in order, when the wind shifted and commenced blowing strong from the north west. The seas ran high, and tho little vessel was taking in so much water that it was found necessarv to heave to. Mr. Cousins, who had followed the sea for eleven years, managed the craft in a skill ful manner, and finally succeeded in bringing her to port, right side up. He has not given up the idea of deep sea fishing, as he is satis fied that it will pay well if prop erly carried on. The Minerva proved herself to be a staunch serviceable little craft, and her owner intends to fit her up this coming spring; but has no inten tion of taking another trip. Coos Bay Neies, 2.
