The estimates of the light bouse board for the current year for gener al appropriations amount to 82,229, 500. The estimates for special appro priations amount to 83,107,310. Among the items are the follewing: Completing the pedestal of the Stat ue of Liberty, New York harbor, 850, 000; depot for the ninth district, 850, 000; tender tor the eleventh district, 885,000; St George reef light, Cali fornia, 8200,000; Helceta head light, Oregon, 880,000; Columbia river light, Oregon, 860,000; Gray's harbor light, Washington territory, 860,000. Says the Benicia, CaL, New Era: The scarcity of salmon in the river ia attributed more to the catfish that abound in the waters and especially their presence in the spawning grounds, where they live upon the spawn. It salmon were plentiful the sea lions would not prove such a ser ious nuisance, as it is only when the fish are scarce that they come up into the straits and rob the nets of their catch. It seems to be the general impression among the fishermen that it the commissioners do not try in some way to repair the injury they have done in placing catfish in these waters, it will be only a short time before the salmon will be extermi nated entirely. ..- am '' PERSONAL MENTION.
