the southern Oregon line.
An effort is being made in the state
press to boom John H. Mitchell for a
place in the cabinet. He's all right
where he is. Better let him Btay
there. The only argument adduced
worth repeating is,' that were he se
lected, the Oregon legislature would
have to elect another senator,'with re
sults too serious to contemplate.
Dictating to a Phonograph.
An Astoria merotiant, who talks'bf
getting a phonograph'here and talk
ing into it, and sending the little wax
cylinder off to be put into another
phonograph and repeated in San
Francisco, says it will beat type-writing
and ordinary correspondence.
Maybe it will, but it's dollars to
dimes that when the phonographic
utterances are faithfully reDroduced
they will sound something as fol

Death of John West.
John West died at his residence at
Westport, in this county last Thurs
day, the 27th inst, at 6 p. H., he was
aged 79 years, 11 months and 19 days.
Deceased was well and widely
known on the Columbia river;
he was a pioneer in the salm
on packing industry, he having
been one of the first to engage in the
business. The news of bis death
will be heard with regret by thous
ands in the northwest.
The news of his death occasioned
universal regret in this city where
deceased was well known, and many
expressions of sorrow were heard.
Deceased was a .native of "Scotland
and had resided' in this vicinity for
upwards of forty years. He was one
of tho first rjen to build a saw-mill
in this regbn, and was a successful
business raan. He leaves an envi
able record and will long be remem
bered in' the community where for
over a generation he had made, his
home.

letter from' Oklahamaha station state

terday as having driven a number of
settlers from that place suddenly de

further interference with whites who
remain peaceable.

Washington, Dec. 28. It is stated
positively at the department of states
that no demand, for indemnity has
been made in the 'case of the steamer
Saytien Republic Morse, owner of
the vessel recently requested secre
tary Bayard to demand S250.000
indemnity. The secretary informed
him that there was no need of haste,
the question' of damage can best be
determined after the -vessel -has ar
rived in New York where shVis due
ma few days. .
CHINAMAN HANGED.

Sing was hanged in" 'county jail to
day, -for- the murder of his
uncle nearly two. - years ago.
During : the pa3t few. days the
condemned man exhibited the most
stolid . indifference as to his fate,
and even up ton within few hours of
his' execution Fwould not believe that
he was to die. His cell mates were
two fellow countrymen, and-last night
they made every effort to impress up
on his mind the fact that this would
be his last day on earth. The con
demned Chinaman arose early this
morning and ate a hearty breakfast
He was removed to a cell near the
callows about 9 o'clock' and made a

to realize this morning that he
would have to die, bqt it did notappear
,td cause him .any anxiety whatever.
He refused "torembrace the Christian
religion and would have nothing to
say to a priest who called on him.

wasBmall. Long Sing was lead out
of his cell it 12aclock','and in "a few
minutes, everything was ready and the
trap was sprung. The murderer died
without a struggle.

icus, Ga., was called out one evening
recently to extinguish the moon. It
was just 6 o'clock in the evening
when the usually pale Luna came up
behind a bank of dark blonds and as
sumed an unwonted rosy tinge. An
