Tee Eoaoburg papers are giving each other Hades. Bad business, brethren. Fight together for the best interests of the burg you lire in. The public don't care for the private quar rels of newspaper men. ' , The "boom" that shook up the Cal ifornia dry bones in '85 and '87 is traveling northward, and next season there mil be a lively alteration in val ues in many a community north of the southern Oregon line. An effort is being made in the state press to boom John H. Mitchell for a place in the cabinet. He's all right where he is. Better let him Btay there. The only argument adduced worth repeating is,' that were he se lected, the Oregon legislature would have to elect another senator,'with re sults too serious to contemplate. Dictating to a Phonograph. An Astoria merotiant, who talks'bf getting a phonograph'here and talk ing into it, and sending the little wax cylinder off to be put into another phonograph and repeated in San Francisco, says it will beat type-writing and ordinary correspondence. Maybe it will, but it's dollars to dimes that when the phonographic utterances are faithfully reDroduced they will sound something as fol lews: Abtobia, Jan. 4th, 18S3-no,1889. Re plying to yonrs of "the 30th, would say that if you (Jim, what was it he said, I mean old Gunderdecker, about mailing' samples) will send some light exhibits by express we believe that (let me see his letter, I forget the figures) some of mo goous miui. oe urusruu, v wiau mo .blanked old fool would write plainer) but whether wo. can-agree on prices is anomer question, etc. The nhonograph has the diaagreoa ble habit of registering and repro ducing all that is spoken, while the type-wnter only records the wrjtten characters as touched by the key. - .i i How Hen Die. If we know all the" methods of ap proach adopted by an enemy we are the better enabled to ward off the. danger and pospone the moment when surrender becomes inevitable. In many instances the inherent strength of the body suffices to enable, itto op pose the tendency toward death. Man? however have lost these forces to such an extent that there is little or no help. In other cases a little aid to the weakened Lungs will make all the difference between sudden death and-many years of useful life. Upon the first symptoms of 'a Cough, Cold or any trouble of the Throat or Lungs, give that old and wellknown remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a careful trial It will prove what thousands say of it to be, the "bene factor, of any-home.?''. . Death of John West. John West died at his residence at Westport, in this county last Thurs day, the 27th inst, at 6 p. H., he was aged 79 years, 11 months and 19 days. San Fbancisooj ,Dee. 28. Long Sing was hanged in" 'county jail to day, -for- the murder of his uncle nearly two. - years ago. During : the pa3t few. days the condemned man exhibited the most stolid . indifference as to his fate, and even up ton within few hours of his' execution Fwould not believe that he was to die. His cell mates were two fellow countrymen, and-last night they made every effort to impress up on his mind the fact that this would be his last day on earth. The con demned Chinaman arose early this morning and ate a hearty breakfast He was removed to a cell near the callows about 9 o'clock' and made a Lrequestto Be left alone for-afew min utes, which was denied, tie seemed to realize this morning that he would have to die, bqt it did notappear ,td cause him .any anxiety whatever. The llooo Looked Like a Mitt The entire fire department of Amer icus, Ga., was called out one evening recently to extinguish the moon. It was just 6 o'clock in the evening when the usually pale Luna came up behind a bank of dark blonds and as sumed an unwonted rosy tinge. An enthusiastic fireman saw her glowing reflection on the side of a house. yelled "fire," and out came the de partment and multitudes of excited citizens ready to battle with the flames. On Bizing up the situation the boys concluded their ladder was too short to get their "hooks" in. Ten Tongue Tanglers. The popnlarity of Peter Piper's celebrated peck of pickled peppers will probably never wane as a snare to catch the tongne that wonld fain be agile; but that test has formidable rivals. The following short senten ces, as their authors maintain, do wonders in baffling the ordinary powers of speech: Gaze on the gay gray brigade. The sea ceasetb, and it sufSceth us. Disease fastened its clutch es upon her and for seven years she withstood Its severest tests, but her vi tal organs were undermined and death seemed Imminent For three months she coughed Incessantly and. could not sleep. She, bought of us a bottle of Dr, King's New Discovery for Consump tion and was so much relieved on tak ing first dose that she slept all night and with one bottle has been miracu lously cured.
